I'm looking for another fun plinking rifle and want to go with an AR look-a-like model. I'm trying to decide between a S&W MP15-22 and a GSG-5. Unfortunately I get good and bad reviews from all the rifles online and can't find something to help me decide. They both seem to have had hiccups in the beginning but newer models are worked out. I was going with a 15-22 then I found a GSG-5 with Gemtech suppressor for sale at a local shop for $400. I don't have the paperwork for the suppressor so I'd have to do that, pay that money, and wait for the rifle. Can I get some opinions on the rifles please. Anyone have experience with either?

The GSG felt extremely cheap when I held one in a store. If i had to choose between then two I would go with the S&W. It felt more sturdy. However, with the GSG you can go with a fixed or retractable stock. On the S&W the stock and the lower are all one piece and can't be changed. I couldn't decide on which to get either, so I started building a custom!!

I'd go for a Ruger sr22 over a S&W mp22.
I prefer my rifles to have a metal receiver. Polymer has never been, nor will it ever be GTG. I buy guns to pass them down...
The only thing about the gemtech suppressor is that you cant service it, aside from the dip.
eventually it will fill with lead and carbon, and no matter how long you dip it wont come out.
Then you have to send it in, and get shafted with a large bill for cleaning.
Dont buy a 22lr suppressor if you cant get inside of it. Sealed works for rifles and handguns, but not for 22. It will fill with crap quickly.

If the GSG comes with a GemTech Outback then it can be serviced by Gemtech in the event you filled it up, and they will leave the loctite off of the endcaps allowing you the service it your self in the future. Or you can open an Outback up yourself pretty easily, they are assembled with red loctite. But never put an Aluminum 22 can in the dip. It will pit aluminum, as it removes the lead.

Hmmm I forgot about that fact that the Gemtech's are sealed. I'm not sure I mind that the 15-22 isn't metal. I've been researching and many people choose the 15-22 better than the SR22. They said the price tag wasn't worth the fact it was a 10/22 in new clothes. Most people said it shot like crap. It was fine with ammo feeding but still didn't shoot well. I like the look and customizing of the 15-22 better too. Still lost....

And then had Benchmark Barrels out of Arlington, WA build me a custom heavy barrel and the action I bought from MidwayUSA. I have yet to put it all together, mainly because the stock won't be built and shipped til next month!!

The only problem with the ones that follow the M16/AR15 platforms is the accuracy out to 150 to 200 yds. (Plus the fact that I would rather have a bolt than a semi)

If you have a AR-15 lower, then this is where I'd spent the cash. They are tack drivers, my buddy has one.

A friend of mine bought both the gsg and the mp15-22. I got to shoot both and was really impressed with the mp15. It felt more like an AR rifle. It was solidly built and disassembled almost exactly like the AR 15. Doing rapid fire I had only one hiccup, and that was after shooting a couple of hundred rounds but he had already put close to 1500 rounds with out cleaning it. The GSG-5 was fun to shoot and both rifles were equally accurate with me giving a slight edge to the mp15-22. I believe this had to do with it being a little heavier which was more to my liking. But if you are in to lighter weapons the GSG-5 would be more to your liking. Both weapons functioned well considering my friend had put several thousand rounds through both of them without cleaning them. In you making your decision it will be based purely on personal preference. My preference went to the mp15-22 but would gladly purchased the gsg down the line after I got bored with the mp15-22.

I haven't had a FTF or FTE yet so suspect the early problems have been ironed out. Accuracy is reasonable but if you can change the trigger it will help an awful lot. the JP Enterprises Trigger Spring Kit AR-15 3-1/2 lb Reduced Power from Midway is worth considering (c$20). I put an Eotech 512 on it which I plan on keeping long-term when I step-up. Overall, I think short of a custom-made it is the best AR type platform out there and for the cost I don't think you can complain. You can get more info here http://smith-wessonforum.com/

I love my spikes dedicated ar upper and it was worth the money I paid. built a nice spikes Lower that can be swapped onto any other ar upper (556,9mm, whatever) upper I decide to build and the whole gun is AR15 spec so its solid. No worry about doing drills and smacking it or tapping the ground accidentally.

I've got high hopes for the Spike's 22 dedicated bolt/barrel combo I just screwed together last week.
And gachrid, I guarantee that the GSG5 you saw for $400 didn't have a Gemtech can on it-it had a fake can to make a legal 16"......

The GSG is a fun gun to shoot, is relatively inexpensive, and the newer models are very reliable.However, if you are going with a "trainer" AR type I'd chose the Spikes upper.Hell, get both as you will sooner or later....
