On my Belly
OK, feeling the itch for a standard 223, magfeeder, 8 twist to sit behind my AAC suppressor, and wanted to see if anyone had some suggestion as to the best action for this job. Will have a 50gn vmax load for critters and a 75gn amax/bergerVLD load for long stuff.

Considering: Stiller predator (though I'd rather have a swept back bolt handle) or Borden 700 clone or Defiance.

Any other out there besides Cooper/Kimber that are smaller scale, yet precision made? (not interarms or CZ)

Wonder if an x-small Sako action will be adaptable to Seekins Mags...

Not using a Rem 700...

Knowns:
-Seekins bottom metal and mags/mounts
-Manners T2 built as light as possible to make up for the HEAVY AAC Can

Any other actions out there that I am forgetting?

Thinking 20-22" Rock 5R 8twist with a little gain maybe...

While we are at it, post pics of your bolt 223...

JB

I like my Borden actions. Waiting on a Stiller with the M-16 extractor. At the moment my Winchester 223AI and my 5R 223 are holding it down. Hard to go wrong with any of that. BTW I have a Nikon Tactical 2.5X10 on the 5R its just about perfect for the 223. Good lowlight capability and enough power to get out to 600 easily.

You will dig a rig like that. I'm having more fun with my recent AJ Brown build...it's is undergoing a transformation over the next few weeks I'll post when it's done. It will remain with these specs though:
18 inch barrel, Smith Enterprises 2-peice bedded bases, Tac Ops bolt knob etc. Did I mention 77 grain blue box Black Hills into the .3's?

No noise, no recoil, cheap to shoot, doesn't get much better....

My GAP 223, 1:6.5 twist, manners stock, US Optics, Ops Inc 12th model

Fun as hell to go to the range and bang the steel around all over the range. I cannot miss any steel under 200 meters, even the small ones.

Whatever you do JB, keep it small and light simply because you can. Use the Defiance action, they are sweet. Mine is super handy but in hindsight, i would have done an edge stock and fluted the barrel.

RD precision built
20"Lilja 3 groove
R700 action
the scope is temporary
77smk's at 2800fps

So accurate it's funny!

Snafu is 100% right on this too...It's what I was doing on my build above and I would only change two things in hindsight...I only wish that I'd gone with a 16" instead of an 18" and should have got the the EDGE or lightest fill possible on the stock....

Jason;

Look; I know you're no newbie here, and you're looking to end up with something primo. But I also wonder if you've given the Savage factory actions their worthy consideration. Back when we breathed life into the Ghost Dancer concept, a good frend who has orders of magnitide more smarts than I about the subject tore down and inspected our rifles, straight from the factory, in miniscule detail. The rifles stood up to the test. Mine shot a 197 at 1Ky on the last day of the SOA in 2002. Factory 24" .260 Rem barrel and action.

For $520, you get a .223 bolt face Varmint Repeater Action, barrel nut, Accue-Trigger, trigger guard, recoil lug and all the bells and whistles surrounding the Savage single stack factory DM, which can be SSS kit-modified for a 9 round capacity.

Stock, action screws, barrel, optics of your choice, lotsa options, and you're done. If the Savage action saves you money, there's McMillan, L-W, and I wouldn't even try to list the better optics the savings could be applied to.

I think it's worth at least considering.

Here's one of my quick and dirty budget Savages.

Picked up an older 110FP rifle with rough looking bore and a very bad duracoat job. Cleaned it up, shortened the barrel, adjusted the headspace. It looked a lot better and shot pretty well. Bed the plastic stock...better. Picked up a cheap used Choate stock....even better still.

Had some old primed LC brass someone gave me. Loaded Varget and 4064 in 24, 25, and 26 grain loads and 53 grain HP Sierras.

Bottom Line - 26 gr of Varget shot 0.5 MOA at 200 yards. 26 gr of 4064 shot 0.75 MOA at 200 yds. And I haven't learned much about shooting in wind yet.

Want to try 52 gr Sierra HPBTs next.

Would do better with a better scope. My old eyes needs better than the 10X I had laying around

That's an awesome looking gun, would love to have that in .243 or .260.

Re: "Tactical" 223 Rifle Project...Suggestions?

Jason,

I think I've shot my "Tactical" 223 at the ASC when you've been there, or if not send me an email and I'll shoot you a link to some pictures.

Mine is:
Rem 700 action
Broughton 5C #7 22" fluted(I just had it shortened and rechambered because accuracy was up to about 1MOA 5 shot group average)
McM A5 Edge
Badger DBM
Badger base
Jewell trigger
Most of the work was done by GAP, PAI installed the DBM

weight of just the rifle is about 9.5#

I would say go with a little lighter contour barrel if you intend to carry it, but for groundhogs, and local f-class matches it is great.

Lazy, it's the rifle I posted above.
