I'm looking for another lighter hunting scope, currently have a mk5 5-25 that I'd like to move to my match rifle.
The AMG is at the top of my list, I am a little concerned though... I've seen a ton of them for sale.
Are there any reasons why I shouldn't buy one?
Quite a few used ones around $1800

I see what you're thinking but I don't think that's a good metric personally. I've hardly read anything bad about them. Hell-there are a lot of Nightforces for sale too and they're great scopes. To be quite honest I don't see that many AMGs for sale. Also-go to Liberty Optics-put one in cart-and check the price on it-if you're going to buy new.

Have had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time behind one of these scopes. Very solid scope with good glass, turrets, and weight. Very solid unit.

I don’t think you can beat it for the money. I’ve seen them go for $1500 used.
I recently compared one against an NX8, ATACR and my PM2. I was impressed. It dint give up a lot to the ATACR or my PM2. Definitely better IMO than the NX8.
Id love to see a 5-30AMG, same wight and same size. Makes me think I should compare the new Leica for size and weight.....

It may be in vain but I'm waiting for a 3-18ish. I've been behind many AMGs and love them. I dont have anything negative to say about them at all (other than no 3-18).

The reticle is extremely thin for a hunting scope. The .2 in this scope are good for eyestrain unless you are at 18x or above. The scope itself is really good. I just dont think its a good hunting scope at all. I think the Vortex PST gen 2 3-15 with the EBR2c or 2D beats it for that use due to the thicker more usable reticle under a wider range of weather and lighting conditions.

It’s only 1.2 oz lighter than your Mark 5 no?

I had one for a short while, was one of my favorite scopes ever. Has a wider FOV at 6x than a lot of 5x and even 4.5/4x scopes.
Yes
The main thing is I need a good scope for my match rifle and with the 56mm objective the MK5 is kinda bulky for hunting but perfect for PRS.

I just ordered one from Liberty Optics. Definitely do what The DFC said and put it in your cart to see pricing.
Holy shit you guys weren't joking.
At that price I had to do it, AMG ordered!
Thanks fellas

I love mine. I've hunted with it for the last few years and swap it over to my LR rigs for target use too. There are times when I find 6x a little much out in the bush. But I don't think I'll be getting rid of it anytime soon.

Phenomenal scopes. They check all the boxes and then some. My dad took a nasty spill last year down an icy hill on an Idaho elk hunt. The AMG took the brunt of the fall. We never in a million years expected it to be the same but it held zero, tracked dead on and he killed a nice cow elk two days later. If they made a 3-18 I’d buy 2 right now. When I’m hunting I rarely go above 12-14x.

While we all want a 3-18, without other changes, it would be a 4-16 or a 3-12. A 4-16 would make me happy for sure. Every time I’m at vortex, I let them know that’s not just what I want, but, there are a lot of guys wanting the exact same thing!

I have a couple and just moved one to my Vudoo. The 6x on the bottom might prove to be a little much for that application sadly.

i think a mid range with capped turrets would be the ideal hunting scope. I use the reticle and with most calibers these days not many people are hunting beyond 3-4 mils of adjustment.

I have one. I wish it had a 7C instead of a 7B reticle. The Vortex scope caps more or less just fall off so I replaced them with AADland (not worth the money). I like the scope overall but there's some things I'd change. LE/Mil pricing is $1850.

My answer to your thread title is No. lol

Fantastic optic and kind of in a class of it's own considering the features and weight. It's a better optic than the MK5 (having owned both) i absolutely love my AMG and my next hunting will likely have another if i don't need the elevation advantage from the MK5.

Holy shit that’s a smoking price. Makes me wanna maybe lighten up the AX...

I wonder if we can read any into this and expect a NRA release of a new 5/6x AMG series?

I own two AMG’s. Wouldn’t hesitate to own a 3rd if needed. It’s a very versatile, feature rich optic for its weight, price and size. I have one on my match rifle and one on my 12lb dual purpose hunting/LR build in 7 Mag. It’s at home in a PRS match just as well as in the field. It does both equally well.

I agree that a lower magnification version would be extremely beneficial, and I believe Vortex hinted at something like that coming for the AMG when I asked them last year. It would definitely be a smart move on their part.

What would you change? And what’s wrong with the AADlands? (I’m in the market for caps)

About the scope? The only change I'd make is to switch to the 7C. The 7B has MIL graduation numbers at the .2 MIL location so you end up holding through the number instead of a dot. AADLand caps are hard plastic and too hard to close, mainly the objective cap. I ordered some Monstrum caps to see if I can size down the Vortex style caps and get them to stay in place. The Vortex caps I use on other applications work very well.

I have an AMG. Love everything about it except for 2 things.
1) The black finish coating scratches easy.
2) Vortex OEM caps stink. Zip ties are cheaper than AADland or Tenebrex caps so I just zip tied them tight.

So did you get an AMG? If so how do you like it?

Do it and be happy, you've already mentioned its at the top of your list.

Hey guys,

New to higher end glass (over 1000 lol)
And I'm trying to research and narrow down some choices.....

This amg is a pretty great deal.....

Since you guys have way more experience than me ....
How would you rate the amg vs a nightforce
Nx8 4x32?
