talk me out of...or into...an ACR

field and stream opened a store near me; kinda like a small cabelas/gander mountain/really upscale dicks; so between jobs, the guys and i stopped by to check it out.

i have heard of an ACR, but never looked into it to see what it was.

well, they had one on the AR rack. it stood out amongst the other ARs, "what the fuck is that thing?" i asked the 'expert'. it had a folding stock and the MOE fore grip and not a rail (did a quick google-foo when i got home), which is fine, i'm not a 300' of rail on a weapon kinda guy. it had a threaded barrel with a flash hider, not a pinned or welded muzzle, which would go great with my YHM.

i like the simple controls, but are they really worth the money? $2200?

accuracy?

durability?

If your talking about a Bushmaster ACR I cant say much of that rifle's reliability but if I were looking for that style rifle I'd go with the offering from FNH.

The SCAR is field proven by ours and others military.

I couldn't pay $2200 for something with a 12 lbs trigger either though. I'd take a quality ar over an acr any day of the week.

I bought an ACR about 2 years ago, and I won't say it's terrible but it definitely doesn't compare to an AR you could get for the same price. I had to send it in and have the barrel replaced when I first got it because it wouldn't cycle right (bushmaster's customer service was surprisingly helpful and fast). It's a fun shooter and has some nice features on it, but definitely not worth the $2K (or the earful I got from my wife) it cost.

Friend of mine bought one and screwed an AAC M4-2K on the end and immediately starting getting end cap strikes. Light enough that it didn't hurt the can but heavy enough that the bullets were keyholing at 30 yards.

If it's your first or even second or third AR then I would say no way. Go main stream for starters. For those that ask my opinion I say a Wylde chambered free floated 18" barrel and a decent trigger such as the Rock River 2 stage match. For my money the ACR is a rifle you buy after you have some experience with ARs and are finding out what you like and what you want. If go get a standard Ar then you can modify it to your hearts desire. You can mount the latest and greatest must have thing-a-ma-jig.
Just one man's opinion but its a man that has bought and sold a lot of rifles just because he didn't like them. They were too heavy - too short -too light - too long - etc etc.

I honestly believe that had the Masada/ACR ended up in the hands of a more serious production team it could have been better than the SCAR. However bushmaster cut a lot of corners and produced a rifle that's roughly the equivalent of a $900 AR.

While I don't think the SCAR is a better design, it is a better final product. That being said, I don't think it really does anything better than what a high end AR does except possibly run suppressed and turning heads at the range.

Get the ACR if you have the disposable income and accept that it'll probably be more of a curiosity in your collection than a fighting/competition rifle.

I owned an ACR for about 3 months then sold it. It was very front end heavy, it didn't like any steel cased ammo (Wolf to be exact), and all the plastic made it feel like a piece of shit. If you like that look then go with a SCAR.

Its funny, I have been hard eyeballing an acr for a while now. For me the SCaR feels like a chincy POS. The stock is wobbly and feels like its made of recycled pringles lids. The latch is a proven weak point. The charging handle reciprocates making it something you constantly have to worry about hand position, etc. The forend is not near long enough and forces you to weak elbow the thing. Your forced to use thier buis. You cannot use pmags without modification. I do know one thing though..they are damn accurate. Also hope you never have an issue. There are reports of guys losing thier scars for over 6months waiting on CS.

Now the acr is a bit front heavy, however I feel the action is smoother, the over all design provides myslf to wrap myself around it. The controls are fantastic, minus the ambi safety which bumps your hand (dremel fix). The stock is beyond solid, and the length of forearm is wonderful. It comes with magpul sights, but gives you the option of whatever. You can use any mag you want. Bushmaster is now selling all the gas system parts so guys are making thier own barrel assemblies from quality bbl manufacturers.

The acr is not perfect. The 1/9 (which is actually closer to 1/8), was a big fail. The lack of follow up accessories for the rifle is discouraging, and again the ambi safety needz a minor fix. That being said, for me, I find thd acr to be better.

Eta: also spoke with a bushy rep and the LGS yesterday afternoon, he stated a 300blk conversion will be available within the next year.

A while back, I had a chance to compare a SCAR and an ACR side by side. In the end, I didn't like either one of them. The price for either was outrageous; the trigger on both of them sucked, they didn't balance or point as well as an AR, and they both had a generally "clunky" feel. I'll stick with my AR's, thank you.

Thats israeli tavor, made in tge usa by iwi. They are extremely nice. Surprisingly heavy for a little package.
