Talk me out of Savage MkII TRR?

I'm interested in a good .22 trainer. I've got a bare bones 10/22 and a green mountain barre but I'd still need a stock and new trigger components. I've been looking into the Savage TRR and its a handsome option. I like the stock, and the trigger and reported accuracy seem better than what my 10/22 might be. And fwiw, my rifle is a 700.

So, is it worth $450 for the Savage? Or stick with the Ruger?

Yeah, the CZ 455 Precision Trainer is a pretty nice set up for $900 after taxes and shipping.
But then it arrives and you start tinkering. Replace the trigger $100, realize that a hammer forged
production barrel isn't quite as accurate as you hoped, which leads to a match grade barrel $425.
Doesn't take long before you realize...Damn, I coulda bought a brand new Annie for what I've got in this,
and it would have been dead on accurate from day one....or maybe that's just me...

I would do a CZ VPT. I did my Savage in a roundabout way and ended up at the same price after adding the Manners and Dip items. Only reason I continued the way I did is I wanted a 16" threaded barrel.

Doing again, I would do the CZ

You'll spend more on the ruger to make it as good as the TR

Spend your savings on great glass and high quality ammo. Will take 1 to 2 bricks of break in before showing true accuracy.

I got the savage a couple of weeks ago and I am happy with it accuracy wise but got to thinking about the 455 pt and an annie, the annie won out and will be here tomorrow. I will do a side by side comparison in another week.

You could get a Savage FV-SR and drop it in a Boyd's Tacticool stock. You will come like $100 under the cost of the TRR and will still have the keg bolt knob and threaded barrel, although 4" shorter.

Yeah if you could find one... been looking for months and nothing but "out of stock, backordered".

I just purchased a cz 455 varmint (17 hmr) yesterday for very similiar price. I believe it was $439? Got wait listed so should take possession in the next couple days. I would consider it. I bought the 17 hmr, the barrels are interchangeable and very modestly priced... 17 hmr, 22lr and 22 mag I believe around $160 for extra barrel. I like the feel of the cz better than the savage. I've been side by side switching each in hand and the cz exudes a higher quality in my opinion (heavier barrel, nicer stock and pad). It feels more sturdy like a center fire in hands. With the current hike, it's not that large of a gap in price shooting the other rimfires either.

I feel it was a good choice. We'll see how it shoots but everyone I know is thrilled with them, including the smaller profile barrel.

I just noticed which model Savage you are looking at. Stay Away, and buy the FV-SR instead. The stock on the TRR is garbage. Thin, flimsy, junk plastic. You'll have to throw it away anyway, so save $200 with the SV-SR unless you just want the extra 6" of bbl. I've seen the FV-SR on gunbroker. They are attainable.

It depends on what you are after.

If you want a training rifle that you can practice with for less $$$ to improve your shooting technique, which you can then transfer to your center fire rig, and if your criteria doesn't change, the Savage TR could do that for you.

If your criteria does change, meaning your accuracy standards go up for your trainer, I would suggest you get a CZ 455 or better.

I have a Savage TR and I have found that it is not as accurate as I would like it to be and this leaves me wanting an upgrade. It's just a natural tendency for accuracy minded shooters to strive for. That being said, my shooting technique has improved measurably by practicing with my Savage TR, so, mission accomplished.

Since ammo has gone up and become more scarce, I think I may be getting a little rusty with my shooting skills. My ground game (jiu jitsu) has been getting pretty slick though. ;)

The point being, I have more time to look at my Savage and wish it were a bedded CZ PT with a Lilja barrel instead of just practicing and improving with what I got, even though what I got functions as a trainer just fine.

A CZ trigger with a $20 spring and shim kit is far superior to the Savage Accutrigger. With the savage you have to buy aftermarket bottom metal if you want to torque the action screws for accuracy. The factory bottom metal will bend long before you get to the torque setting that you need for maximum accuracy. The savage bolts are sometimes referred to as tin metal and can wear prematurely. Two of my buddies have holes worn into the bottom of their bolts, though they still seem to be shooting ok. Some of the stocks from Savage have been known to crack. Some of the savages shoot very well, others are average at best. Almost all of the CZs shoot very well (though my experience tells me that CZs chambered in 17hmr are a crap shoot). For fit and finish it is not even close. CZs are very solid and have great bolts. The fit and finish on the Savage is acceptable but not great. After shooting my CZs I fired a buddies Savage and knew after cycling the bolt the 2nd time I would never own one. That being said, when they are accurate they are hard not to respect. Very good accuracy for a great price. Just not my cup of tea.

I've got a CZ452 Varmint in 17 HMR and two Savages in .22lr. I really regret buying the Savages. I wanted a matching pair for my wife and I to have the same set up because she was getting into .22 shoots. The triggers are terrible, the accuracy is mediocre at best compared to my CZ. Buy the CZ and don't look back.

I love my TRR SR. Added D.I.P. bottom metal and scope base. Pillared and bedded, action screws torqued @ 20in lbs, and about 20 minutes spent on the trigger(14 ounces safely). Clearidge Ultra XP 4.5-14 AO It is a tack driver.
