This seems to be the best bang for buck, and is on my “buy” list for this week during the sales.

What if I don’t want to run a Hornady bullet? That’s my biggest concern.

I’ve read all the threads comparing this model to the elite, and I keep coming back to the Hornady branded 5700.

you want to save the money and just use the ones you have new plastic toys are not what a man should spend his money on . buy another gun or more ammo . If that helped cool if your getting one any way hope it works well for you gl .

IMHO - buy the cheapest one that does the job and use a bluetooth connected app like Ballistics Arc for the heavy lifting - much easier to read and build range cards on the apps. If you only want to carry one device and not use your phone, then yes buy the full featured Kestrel.

What’s the disadvantage (if any) of buying the Sportsman 5700 compared to the Hornady 4dof?

Doug from Camera land has the Sportsman for free with some scopes.
I'm sure he'd be willing to help you out whether you needed a scope or not.

Phones in field conditions no bueno. If you're shooting competitively get a standalone Kestrel and these days I'd get the 4DOF first if they have a 4DOF profile for the bullet you plan to use, if not buy the AB version if they have a CDM for it.

You can upgrade the sportsman to elite as well.

I’m a buy once, cry once kinda dude. The Hornady seems to be the perfect fit. I don’t have a Kestrel, and this is worth at least 10 “cool points”.

Thanks fellas.
