2 oil tankers damaged in suspected attack in the Gulf of Oman, crew evacuated




Two oil tankers were damaged in a suspected attack off the Gulf of Oman early Thursday, according to multiple reports.
The U.S. Navy's Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet told Reuters it was assisting two tankers in the Gulf of Oman after receiving two distress calls. Details of the incident were unclear, but one of the operators made an unconfirmed report that a torpedo had hit its ship, Reuters reported.
"We are aware of the reported attack on tankers in the Gulf of Oman. U.S. Naval Forces in the region received two separate distress calls at 6:12 a.m. local time and a second one at 7:00 a.m.,'' Joshua Frey of the Fifth Fleet said. The Fleet did not blame anyone for the attack.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations -- an arm of the British Navy -- had put out an alert earlier and urged "extreme caution" amid U.S.-Iran tensions.
The incident comes as Iranian media claimed — without offering any evidence — that two oil tankers had been targeted in the area.
The area is near the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route through which 20 percent of global oil consumption passes from Middle East producers. Benchmark Brent crude, in apparent reaction to the incident, rose its prices by 3.4% on Thursday.
Dryad Global, a maritime intelligence firm, identified one of the vessels involved as the MT Front Altair a Marshall Islands-flagged crude oil tanker. The vessel was "on fire and adrift," Dryad added.

International Tanker Management, which operates the MT Front Altair said an explosion had caused a fire onboard. The firm told the Associated Press the incident is still being investigated and it was unclear what caused the explosion. Its 23 crew members were evacuated by the nearby Hyundai Dubai Vessel and are now safe, the firm said.
The other vessel, the Panama-flagged Kokuka Courageous, sustained damage on its hull starboard side, said BSM Ship Management. 21 sailors were evacuated, and one was slightly injured, four shipping and trade sources said.

On Wednesday, after talks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Abe warned that any "accidental conflict" amid heightened tensions between Iran and the U.S. must be avoided at all costs.
While meeting with Abe on Thursday, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that while Tehran doesn't want an atomic bomb, "America could not do anything" to stop Iran if it did.
Khamenei was quoted earlier saying that Iran "will in no way repeat" negotiations with the U.S. amid tension over its unraveling nuclear deal with world powers.

You need to re-read your history while removing the lies you think are true. Who was the biggest proponent of the war an was a leading MIC supporter? He also had huge stocks invested in same. Which ever way you turn it there are number of players that want US to take on Iran , if we skip the Chickenhawks and MIC , no1 and no2 are Israel and Saudi Arabia .
GCC and Saudi Kabal know they can't take on Iran on thier own. They can hire mercs from Sudan to Pakistan to fight protesters at home and a low level insurgency in Yemen ,but not for full blown war. Lets not forget why US troops are in the Gulf , because GCC shat their pants when Sadam was around.

Torpedo attack is unlikely , easyest is to drop mines of civilian vessels and hope for a resoult ,hard to catch in the act,but honestly Iran can hardly gain anything by going to war it will loose. No rationale for that . Most likely a third party trying to get war started. Could even be the new pet Iranians --> courrent terrorists of choice for use in the gulf are the Iranian Mojahedin-e-Khalq

My most real concern is about what happens when the US actively intervenes on Iranian soil.

The Mexican Border is arterially bleeding infiltrators. I believe a very significant number of them, over many years, have been Republican Guard sleeper agents with relatives back in Iran under Republican Guard guns.

The Cochise Stronghold is visible three seven miles from my home; and we know for a fact that the Campground, closed for Summer fire season, is currently being actively used by Drug Mules.

God know who else is up there.

The sleepers get to naturalize, own the BoR, and arm up legally, just the same as you, me, and Army Jerry.

Drop anything on Iran, and watch the beehive swarm.

That war was was dragged out longer because of the lack of public support. Public support was lost primarily for two reasons. First, it was the first war to to have graphic uncensored material televised into the living rooms of America. The general public and especially the soldiers parents don't have the stomach for heinous nature of war. And all wars are, btw. Second was the hippie, free love protesters. That war was a debacle. I grew up watching it and knew lots of soldiers that fought in it. Just don't kid yourself thinking that the protest shortened that war. In fear of public and world opinion we had politicians running the war trying more to appease the press than win the war. Instead they should have had the military leaders do what they wanted. Many men who served there will tell you, you can't win a war with one hand tied behind your back. Some of the same even believe that it could have been won. This from men that were there. Personally I don't think it was winnable but the conclusion might have come sooner if we were fully committed. Thus saving lives. The protesters only drew out that war only causing more casualties. Then they had the nerve to spit on and call the returning vets baby killers. IMO it was America's lowest moment.

JHMH...I also watched...And my number never came up...But, the commanding general of the NVA said, in his memoir, that the NVA was decimated during the Tet offensive...And that if it hadn't been for the antiwar effort in America, they would have lost the war...I remember Walter Cronkite, standing in a graphic of Vietnam, stating "The war is lost." Iranian vessel removed unexploded mine from stricken oil tanker in Gulf of Oman, US officials say


An Iranian vessel removed an unexploded mine that had been attached to a Japanese-owned oil tanker which suffered serious damage after an explosion in the Gulf of Oman early Thursday, U.S. officials told Fox News, as the U.S. Navy released video purportedly showing the incident.

The imagery came from the USS Bainbridge, a guided-missile destroyer which rescued 21 sailors from the stricken tanker.

At least one other mine attached to tanker's hull detonated, causing the blast. It happened near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key route for oil shipments in the region.

A U.S. official told Fox News an Iranian gunboat approached the Kokuka Courageous later in the day and removed the unexploded triangular-shaped limpet mine, the same type of mine used to damage four other tankers in the Gulf of Oman last month.

The official, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive information, said the suspected Iranian vessel did not bear any flags, nor did the crew members wear any uniforms. But, the class of vessel, what the U.S. military has called a fast inshore attack craft (FIAC), was the same type of ship used by Iran to harass American warships in the Persian Gulf in recent years.

Other Iranian small boats have remained near the stricken oil tanker since the attack early Thursday, the official added.

IRAN RESPONSIBLE FOR 'BLATANT ASSAULT' ON OIL TANKERS, POMPEO SAYS

The official said the order to abandon ship was given after the tanker's captain spotted the unexploded mine, not because of the fire aboard the ship.

Another tanker, a Norwegian-owned vessel called the Front Altair, also was attacked in the Gulf of Oman Thursday. Its crew was being held in Iran, according to U.S. officials.

"This is what we’re out here for," Cmdr. M. Kathryn Devin, the USS Bainbridge's commanding officer, said of the rescues. "Our mission is to ensure maritime safety and to answer the call for aid when we can."

At the State Department on Thursday afternoon, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Iran for the attacks on both oil tankers.

Iran's U.N. Mission said its government "categorically rejects" the U.S. claim that it was responsible for the attacks and condemned it "in the strongest possible terms."
