Looks like that the Army is moving the Armor school to Benning. Guess you Armor Marines get to play in our sand pits.

FORT KNOX, Ky. – Fort Knox has long been known for its heavy metals — gold bricks and armored tanks.

But the tank's 70-year connection to the Army post in the hills of central Kentucky ended Thursday as the Armor Center, the training school for generations of tank soldiers, began its move to Fort Benning in Georgia.

"It's a bittersweet day," said retired Lt. Col. Richard Ardisson, a former tank commander who attended the transfer of command ceremony. "You always hate to see change, especially change that's as symbolic as this is for old tankers and cavalrymen."

The ceremony symbolized the shift of authority over Fort Knox from the Armor Center to Accessions Command, making the base the Army's home for recruiting, training and human resources. The changes are part of a military reorganization announced by the Pentagon five years ago.

More than 180 M1 tanks and about 1,000 other vehicles will depart Fort Knox over the next year and a half.

The tank's history at Fort Knox stretches back to the eve of the country's entry into World War II, when military leaders noted the successes of German tank divisions that conquered France in 1940.

"The high profile, high visibility use of German armored formations in the destruction of France, it (sent) a shock wave through the U.S. Army," said Robert Cameron, the Army's Armor Branch historian.

Cameron said at the time, Knox had already become the Army's home for mechanized cavalry.

The post's vast acreage, varied landscapes and its road and rail access made it a perfect spot for tank training and firing, Cameron said.

Tank training will merge with Fort Benning's infantry school to create what the military calls the Maneuver Center of Excellence.

Under the Army reorganization announced in 2005, the Human Resources Command and the 3,400 members of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division were moved to Fort Knox.

The Army will begin taking tanks, Humvees, Bradleys and other vehicles out of Fort Knox once facilities and infrastructure changes are finished at Fort Benning, said Michael Gillette, who is coordinating the Armor Center's move.

Some of the post's armor legacy will stay behind, namely a collection dedicated to Gen. George S. Patton at Fort Knox's Patton Museum. And several tanks and other armored vehicles used as monuments around the post will also stay.

The gold vault, which has about 4,600 tons of gold bullion, will also remain.

Re: Tankers leaving Knox for Benning!

Sad day when the new Cavalry Scouts will no longer be able to trade stories about Knox, describe in horrific detail the hills Agony, Misery and Heartbreak ( they make Benning's hills look like childs play) and from now on, 5/15 Cav will not be where we knew it.

At least thy aren't moving to a lame post like Jackson or Leonard Wood.

Let the rivalry commence. haha

Re: Tankers leaving Knox for Benning!

I've lived in the area of Ft. Knox most of my life and I have always had a thing for armor. To see the armor school moved breaks my heart. To watch tradition and history dragged off from a place that my dad and a couple of uncles served just bums me out. It would be like closing the runways at Wright Patterson AFB, the birth place of aviation.

Being at the Benning School for Boys now the tankers might learn something.

Re: Tankers leaving Knox for Benning!

Like how freaking crowded Benning's range and tracked maneuver footprint already is without bringing tank and cav BCT, AIT, OBC, OAC, and all the NCO and Master Gunner courses.

You can imagine how ticked off the tankers were when someone asked if they were going to change the Patton Museum to the PERSCOM, Accessions, and Recruiting Museum.

It's gonna get interesting.

Probably not, they're generally a brutish and dense bunch.

Re: Tankers leaving Knox for Benning!

Shame to see it move to Benning. The coldest I have ever been was during OSUT at Ft. Knox. My dad went through there back in the day and some years later I was getting yelled at there. It may be a sign that the Abrams is on the way out or the whole program is being downsized. I loved being on them but its not suited for the types of combat that keeps coming around lately. Maybe if we go in on Korea it will be a mainstay on the front lines again.

Re: Tankers leaving Knox for Benning!

I don't think that the M1 program is being phased out! There is nothing like 60 tones of happiness that brings pause to an enemy. But it is our current government that I would not be surprised.

Cut back, on the road to phasing out. and its 70 tons of pure whoopass. We were able to get them up to 70+ on the range trails at Ft. Hood. That's an accomplishment for something with a motor the size of a diesel engine in a ford F-350 that weighs that much. The tranny is a huge factor in this but meh..

Is that why you guys( tankers) were aways having the packs or whatever they're called changed out?

Aside from the possible carbon monoxide poisoning, there is nothing better than standing behind an M1 on a range in winter while it's running.

Or everyone might realize they're following the Armor.

Yeah, seems most of the ones we did were due to issues with the Tranny but time wise you can swap a pack out alot faster than removing the motor from tranny or tranny from motor. We had mechanics but for some reason they were never around.

Re: Tankers leaving Knox for Benning!

Agony and Misery. Man that brought back some memories. Hadn't heard that term in 20 years. I was one of those Marine Corps Tankers that went through there for basic tank school and then back again for tank commander school. What I remember is pretty girls, long nights partying, early morning runs up and down those dang hills/mountains, and pretty girls.

Re: Tankers leaving Knox for Benning!

I remember running by Marine tankers thinking "man, that must suck to be a Marine tanker...first you gotta deal with MCRD and then Knox?".

What are you guys, demented?

people just don't believe me about the hills unless they experienced them.

Re: Tankers leaving Knox for Benning!

I liked Ft. Knox. Great post. Had a lot of good times there. The wash rack sucked, cuz that clay did NOT want to come off the suspension. Those of you who have been there know what I'm talking about.

For you grunts.....tankers always need a little track lubricant handy.... :p

Crunchy crunchy is the sound.........

Re: Tankers leaving Knox for Benning!

I hated to see this happen. I spent a combined total of 14 years there, both as a soldier and civilian. Took Basic and AIT there in 63 and then retired there in 83. Was stationed there several times in between, including 3-years during the mid 70s as a Drill Sgt in A-13-4 and later for the M60A1/A3 Master Gunner Course. I always liked Knox, but will admit that it was not an ideal location for modern Armor training, but for all of Knox's limitation's, Ft Benning is a far worse location.

Fort Benning has hills? When did they get those?

I had heard about the change from a brother at BAE Systems who does training on some of the new vehicle platforms. He (also former 11C) says the Fat Boys are being phased out for wheeled turrets, the same way our Bradleys are going away for Strykers. It's really the end of the Cold War TO&E I guess.

Anyway ... Sorry to hear Benning is being overrun with DATs.

Re: Tankers leaving Knox for Benning!

Cavscout1983, no but when the big Green Machine sent me to Duluth MN in the late 70s for two years to be an Advisor to a NG Tank Bn, I did call my Branch Manager and asked what bad thing I had done to him, to warrant such an assignment. Just kidding, it was great duty but the weather really, really,--------------- really, sucked.

Re: Tankers leaving Knox for Benning!

If you don't like the weather just wait an hour it'll change... Ah yes Basic/AIT April-Aug of '85 with C-1-1 Training Battalion at Knox becoming a 19K. Good times. I hate to see the "Home of Armor" move. Being born and growing up here(KY) I never could figure out how guys from the deep south (GA, LA) couldn't handle the summer heat/humidity and would drop like flies.

Re: Tankers leaving Knox for Benning!

I was at the Patton Museum over the weekend talking with some of the museum officials. They said some of the armor school folks are concerned about the move to Fort Benning because they have no infrastructure suitable for the armor school, and that the bridges can't handle the Abrams. I also heard they are going to replace the display tanks at the gates of Ft. Knox with desks and file cabinets.
Many of the volunteers at the Patton Museum should be upset about moving the armor collection to Benning. They spent a lot of time and sweat restoring many of the vehicles for the museum only to have them shipped off to Benning, and who knows what condition they will be in when they arrive.
