I'm trying to find a new tape to use to tape off areas while painting. When I am using Cerakote or KG gunkote the standard masking tape and blue painters tape leaves a pretty bad residue all over and is difficult to remove after.

What are you guys using and where can I get some?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Tape for painting and baking

Any type of tape used, even painter mask, will leave residue.

If one is using tape or painters mask or anything else for that matter one needs to flash dry in a oven at low temp, like 150 or lower, in between colors.

Once all colors have been applied one then removes the tape or mask. To remove the residue one would use mineral sprits to dissolve the residue. Mineral sprits will cut the tape residue but won't touch the coating if it has been properly flash cured.

There are two types of paint mask used for stencils, high temp and regular.

try 3M electrical tape. Not sure why but the red seems to work really well. And it makes a good seal on threads when blasting and doesn't fall apartin the blast cabinet.

Not sure if it will take the heat for KG but it works pretty well for Cerakote at 300 and under.
The cheap black tape sux.
If you have an enzyme type parts washer it takes tape residue off pretty painlessly.

Re: Tape for painting and baking

3M green and the highland 3m are solvent born tapes and they will dissolve from heat. 3M makes a new yellow tape that is for waterborne technology and, from what I have seen, works well in an automotive bake system. Remember that automotive bake does not exceed 200 degrees for no more than 45 min. Being from the automotive paint industry I would agree with the other posters on using "only" the tapes made for powdercoat as they are designed for extreme heat ranges. Besides, even if that roll of tape is 20 bucks it will last several jobs and it costs way less than a redo from mistakes. IMHO. Thanks Tommy
