target acquisition ?

in the field course style matches, I have a hard time acquiring some tgts. some of the tgts can not be seen by the naked eye unless sun is just right.
shooting into a desert valley where trps are hard to id, and the clock is ticking, any helps woud be appreciated.

Get on glass before if possible. Remember any landmarks. Find target at lower mag, up magnification if needed. Repeat as needed.

Glass your targets in advance and note clock positions horizontally and vertically and land marks from shooting position.

want to shoot the shtc this year, just nervous that everything done on the clock and tgt acq is one of my weakneses. trying to find ways to up my game/ speed up my process.

Note we do not allow anyone on the glass before the clock starts.

But do as above, like Steel head or Danup8520 suggested soon as the clock starts. But create a fast terrain map, even if just on your armboard. I run masking tape, folded over to create tear-offs like motocross goggles. Then after the stage, I just peel it off and toss it reveling a fresh one. You do not need them for every stage, but if the stage is complex or you're struggling to remember the target order, it is a good trick. Also if you do not shoot the same exact gun/load/dope as your teammate, make sure your armboard has a drop chart for each of you.

You can sketch a primitive map fast before on the clock and pop in the details on the clock. I set a couple of stages where this is a huge benefit because the targets must be engaged in a predetermined sequence that is counter-intuitive.

We do a one day that is a perfect spin-up for the SHTC. We will even offer a couple of practice days. This match sold out 10 months in advance, but have a waitlist available.

No, the wind clinic seen on Calguns, are the benchrest crowd out of Coalinga. Just a note, benchrest shoots sighters and then look for the small differences between wind shifts, at one target distance. Field matches are usually better served by determining the initial wind value for each target across a wide FOF and various ranges, without wind flags, sometimes across canyons where mirage is present or as helpful.

i went to the avenal gun club web page, how do i find the one day spin up? or are you talking the match above?

You will not find much info on the Avenal Gun Club site. We have our match schedule on Practiscore.

The Team Match is what I was referring to as a good spin up, but we are going to host a few free practice days before (just range fees).

I have had similar challenges at my home range(Avenal) there are lots of targets in the FOV, as a newer shooter I was using too much magnification.

In our club matches when I can get on glass as highlighted above and with the naked eye identify proximity to landmarks, I refer to the course of fire order and jot notes on my armboard as diver says. I am now down to 10x on my mag (5x27) on stages that have a wide FOF with several targets. I only increase the mag if all the targets are easy to locate or in close proximity to each other. One recent stage we had 6 targets and a FOF from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock and ranges from 250y to 700y, shot it at 10x. We had another stage, a speed stage with all targets @400y right next to each other, I increased to 18x mag.

I was recently informed of a great area to shoot from a member here.

I was told the place but no target locations.
These targets are fairly small and not painted and definitely not obvious.

I arrived and set up my spotter and started scanning.
I set up a sketch with a prominent central feature as 12 o’clock.
Then as I found the targets I noted their position relative to center
After making a sketch with notes the ones I found are etched into my brain and I don’t need to look at it to locate those targets.

That was one of the most enjoyable days of shooting Ever.

I really like locating targets and even reticle ranging at appropriate distances if I know the target sizes.

Moral of this story?
Notes a sketches are a huge help.
