Anyone had a baffle strike or end cap kiss? Today I put my new 30ba on my 300wm. Zeroed without the can and then attached it. Poi went 4' right at 50yrds. Small indention where the bullet kissed the end cap on exit....I'm hoping this can be ignored and the baffles weren't damaged. Never had a baffle strike before on my other cans so I'm not sure how severe it would look inside if it did.

This^. Call Zak at Thunderbeast and get his thoughts. My bet would be that your threading is off.

Re: TBAC 30ba end cap kiss...

Sorry to hear you had a problem. As others have said, this is almost always due to bad threads or a shoulder than is not square. Usually if you do the check looking down the bore you can see it offset (per manual sheet). If you just see a tiny mark on the endcap it will typically not cause a problem. We'd be happy to look at it if you'd like. We can check out the thread/shoulder on the barrel, and it needs to be checked out and fixed before you shoot the suppressor on that barrel anyway.

thanks
Zak

Re: TBAC 30ba end cap kiss...

I know factory threads should be fine but I have all of mine checked by a smith. The PITA time and $$ to ship it off is worth it...

Re: TBAC 30ba end cap kiss...

I had a smith check the threads prior to mounting brake. Looked through the bore without the bolt to check for clearance (all looked good to me). 50yrds was for bore sighting.

.
Does that include the Shoulder-cut for concentric to Bore, in checking Threads ?

Re: TBAC 30ba end cap kiss...

^ no clue. It's headed back in the morning to cut the threads off and start over. If its still jacked up its getting a new barrel. May have to call the gradous

Re: TBAC 30ba end cap kiss...

Hey OP - if you don't mind me asking, what factory barrel was it?
I just ordered the 30ba to swap between a 700 AAC (factory threads) and a WOA SS barrel for my AR.
Was really hoping I wouldn't need to have both cut down and re-threaded.

Re: TBAC 30ba end cap kiss...

How many times have you shot this rifle with this can? Or how many rounds are through the can? My only guess besides the threads not being concentric would be an extreme build up of carbon that may have slightly deflected the bullet. I have seen this happen before.

Re: TBAC 30ba end cap kiss...

Last weekend i had the same problem with my new 8" 300 blackout and 30ba bullet touching at 6 oclock. Just called thunderbeast and will be sending upper and suppressor back to them to true it up.

Re: TBAC 30ba end cap kiss...

Just curious what twist barrel and bullet weight you were using???

Amidst all the thread concentricity talk don't forget that heavy bullets mixed with slow twist rates are capable of creating this exact issue!!!

Twist rate can be calculated using the following equation...

Twist Rate = (3.5 * Velocity^0.5 * Diameter^2) / Length

Re: TBAC 30ba end cap kiss...

I went back to Houston armory where I bought my barrel and as much as I hate to admit it my problem was when I installed the brake I didn't make sure the washer was centered and there was enough play to tweak it to allow the baffle strike. They installed a new washer for me and I put around 100 round through it today without any problems.

Re: TBAC 30ba end cap kiss...

1:10 shooting 180E tip, picked up some 210 vld today. I had the barrel chucked up, threads cut off and started over. Put about 100rnds down range over the weekend. I don't think my gun likes the 180's, but no more end cap issues

Zak, whats the turn around time for checking/fixing threads and shoulders on barrels? i have an AR and one of the brakes for threading on an AR but I dont think the shoulder is machined correctly. Obviously, my 30BA will go on it but i kinda want to send yall the upper and the brake and have you install it and square it up so this end-cap kiss doesnt happen.

Orrbull, was that factory ammo u were shooting? Either way check the runout on a few live rounds, I have seen factory match ammo have runout as bad as .007, if it's .003 or less then you can rule that out.
