As you know, the key to successfully running the 3-4 defense is to have STUD defensive tackles & ends who are literally immovable against the run. The DC also needs depth there, as those big guys get winded if the drives are much more than 3-5 minutes at a time. Finally, you have to have smart, athletic MLBs who are big enough to stuff a 230 lb back AND run with a tight end or WR going over the middle. The learning curve for them to learn the reads, audibles & make the calls is at least a season too.
Bottom line, UT is in their first year with the defense. No surprise they're having significant growing pains. They have ZERO depth on that side of the ball, the MLBs are still learning the schemes, and they're playing in the unforgiving SEC.
My $.02, and as a Alabama graduate who lives in Memphis, I am LOVING every minute of the season they're having! I had to endure some bad seasons & streaks in the '90s and now it's fun again to say Roll Tide! UT will be back but they are going to need another 1-2 seasons to rebuild on defense and learn the 3-4.
