Terrapin.... will be..

Man I need to get some cash together and get one of these!

Purchase was painful but then I thought about how painful it was going to be with a RF that couldn't reach out past 1000 yards, give accurate readings and worst of all nobody offering something of worth for who knows how long. I have come to learn that not having a good RF will inhibit your potential.

Its a shame its being dropped from the product line becasue it is top tier equipment.
Personally I have a hard time buying anything electronic that has been discontinued or has a major revision or change.

I will just have to enjoy my Swaro's.

Looking for some help I figured this would be my best bet since the majority of you guys probably have attended sniper schools of some sort( i have too) i have a plrf 10 and cannot find my manual. Im trying to run a bit on my unit but im not gettng anything to come up. Im trying to do this because when i hit my range button all it displays it 4 lines. Ive used this things for a long time and just recently stopped giving me ranges. Any ideas other than goin to vectronix as i would like to resolve myself if possible

jcraig12 - To access and initiate the built-in test (bit), press the distance key six times in rapid succession. The test should begin automatically. In regards to the "- - - -" displayed when taking a reading, try to disable the gate function or reset your unit to factory defaults. To disable or enable the gate function, press the distance key three times. After "Gate" is displayed, scroll through the setting by pressing the function key. To reset your unit, press the function key eight times. When "rst" is displayed, press the function key eight times again. As with all electronics, double check the condition of your batteries and terminal contacts.

Euro Optic shipped my 10C. Waiting impatiently. The data cable from PRG still hasn't shipped. I got the 48. Any opinions on this vs the one with the trigger?

I changed my order to the one with the trigger. I have noticed with my 10 that when i have it on a tripod when i press the button on top of the unit to fire it still disturbs it and changes what its aimed at. at anything less than about 1500yds you wont have a problem, but its when you range 2500+ it becomes more difficult.

I'm so close to ordering a Terrapin but want to wait and see what, if anything, will be demoed at SHOT. Hopefully Terrapins will remain in stock by the end of next week should nothing promising be shown at SHOT.

My Bushnell Fusion 1 mile 10x42s work 85% of the time for what I need to range but I'd like to have something more capable when needed. I'd love to replace them with a set of Vectors and never have a problem again but that's a *little* more than I want to spend!

Don't know what their product line direction(s) are but I'm hoping some of the folks (Frank?) attending will stop by the APO booth and report back. I spoke earlier today with someone at Vectronix and they recommended folks visit the APO booth. I don't work for either company so I too am hoping to see a report back.

Please update on this, as I think many are waiting to see from SHOT if we need to make a Terrapin a priority or if there is a chance of a suitable replacement for 1500 yds + reliable ranging.

Ill be pissed if they announce something better/cheaper next week. Especially considering I just ordered a Terrapin. Guess APO will be first on my stop

+1000. I just got mine and love it but my hesitation at first was exactly what you said. I can't imagine there would be something better that's cheaper. Maybe something with Blue Tooth or Trimble connectivity but only reaches out to 1000 yards. But then whats the fucking point of that. Actually I'm not going to imagine. Fuck I hate technology sometimes.

My talk with Larry at Vectronix was informative. Honestly Vectronix is very much a Mil oriented business. The 10 and 15 was cutting into the sales of the 25C and they wanted to stop that and also it was about phasing out old tech. It was also brought up that they had nothing for SHOT and they do not attend SHOT, but that they may be bringing a Terrapin 'like' product to the market sometime in LATE 2014. A lot of what has been said is they weren't making the profits from their units like the 05, 10, and 15. Look at the 25C which they call their flagship unit right now, they are not likely to undercut sales again by releasing a Terrapin like product with more bells and whistles.

The 25C isnt even in the same class as the Terrapin. The 25C starts around 8k, the Terrapin 2K. Without the Terrapin there is a bit of a gap in the market IMO
Take a look for a minute. Long range shooters who want something capable it hitting decent size targets at 1K but dont want to drop the coin on a terrapin are pretty much limited to the Fusion 1 Mile which costs around the $1,100-$1,300 mark depending on configuration. Personally I think the Leica and the Zeiss are priced way to high for their performance. Yes they have good glass but they perform marginally better as an LRF than the Fusions for $300-$1000 more than what a Terrapin costs The Terrapin blows them away with ranging performance but lacks the magnification or binocular configuration so there is personal preference here. Just my .02

it will be interesting to see what comes out of shot but it wont be a vectronix unit. when i spoke to vectronix they said the terrapin is done and the 10's 15's and nothing new would be coming out. just straight to the 25c. if another company comes out with something that takes the nitch market of where the tarrapin was, i doubt the construction and craftsmanship will be as good as the vectronix units. whatever it is, may range far and be a good performer, but thats a big part of why the vectronix is so nice, they are mil grade and you can tell. they are tough as nails and meant to withstand ultra harsh conditions and shock.

The pony express just brought it today. Took forever. First impression is…..wow, bad ass. It came with a nice coyote case. It also has a black rubber armor condom thingy like my old Aimpoint Comp M3. I took the rubber boot off to see what was underneath, and there must have been 20 screws holding the case closed. These guys don't mess around. It works just like my Terrapin but it also will give azimuth, inclination and will measure the distance between to points and will also give you height of a distant object. It also has a cool feature that will give you corrections for calling artillery. You lase the target and then lase the impact and it will tell you what the correction is. That's assuming your arty guys are on it (shot, over. shot, out. splash over, splash out) so that you know when to expect the impact. It's typical Vextronix, but it's in a different league than the Terrapin. Glad I got mine before the well went dry.

Damn, the side shot look like one of the Imperial Walkers from Star Wars.

It looks to me like the Bushnell fusion one-mile binoculars would outdo the true pulse 360s for half the price.

The TruPulse will integrate with FFS and will give azimuth and inclination. The Bushnell hasn't been tested with FFS as far as I know. Less accurate beam than the Terrapin, but more functionality than the Bushnell

heres what i got from the ashbury booth on the terapin. vectronix is supposedly are planning to stop manufacturing them around feb, march timeframe but they should be available through the remainder of 2014 or until supply's run out. there is a possible terapin like replacement but it is only in the design stage at this point. possible late summer to Q4 release date. no details on specs or cost at this point. sorry guys thats it

I called several vendors yesterday, and was told that Vectronix has suspended imports of the Terrapin. So those who were thinking they could still be ordered by the end of the x-month may be out of luck. I take this as, no more will be coming into the country, except for maybe those that are already in transit, and have customs paperwork completed.

I found a new/unused one on Gunbroker yesterday at a very reasonable price. It's gone now... Hehehe.

Awesome! I thought I missed the boat on the Ashbury deals on Dec 31...... Will be upgrading from my PLRF-10 to the 10c, or something else to link to my Nomad w/FFS. Am now subscribed to the GB thread and standing by.

sounds interesting. should be a good buy for a lot of people. A couple of us already jumped when PRG had the sale, will be interesting to see how the ashbury prices compare. PRG said they couldnt order any more of the 10's or 15's after the new year. i guess that wasnt true?

Ash bury is gonna do a special SH group buy on all Vectronix lasers from the Terrapin to the 25c.

The 10c and 15c are discontinuing in June/July the Terrapin some time later.

We'll be announcing it shortly, but Ashbury has all of them available.

Hey Frank, Any idea how soon is shortly for the group buy announcement? I have a Terrapin on order with PRG but they dont have any idea when their shipment will arrive. If Ashbury has them in stock and the price is right, Ill call them with my CC# today!

Figures I miss out again... the Terrapin that shipped on Monday from Mile High just arrived today. Would have waited a little longer if I knew could have saved a few bucks. Oh well, thanks again Frank and at least others can save a few bucks!

On the other hand, immediately after unboxing it I walked outside in the light sprinkling rain, steadied on the side of the building, and ranged the top of a small cell phone tower at 2916 yards. Neat!

I'll still check in on the group buy price, might have to snag a 10C...

I was told PRG is just .gov only sales now, at a least as far as we are concerned. Which is why PRG is saying nothing after the 1st of the year is my guess.

For us in the commercial market, I was assured by both Vectronix and Ashbury that we can use Ashbury and have access to the full product line.

For the Group buy, they are not so much discounting the units, but throwing in a bunch of stuff like the cables to connect the 10c and 15c to your Trimble among other goodies.

I will email Ashbury today again, they sent me a preliminary breakdown but I will get the official offer posted as soon as possible.

But if you are not .gov or .mil, use Ashbury and you'll get your product. Moving forward that is what we are told to do ... you can even get the 25c from them.

thats unfortunate prg is moving away from civ sales. they were really easy to deal with. Ashbury on the other hand i had to order some parts from and it was not as straight forward. maybe they have changed? but about 6 months ago i called and had to be transferred to their accounts dept to establish an account, then i ordered the parts, but they had to do all the paperwork and call back several days later with what the total invoice amount was. like i said, maybe they have streamlined it, but i felt like they were more used to dealing with retailers who have open running accounts etc. Standing by to see what the offerings will be but sounds like they wont be beating the prices that prg offered on their closeout. Thanks for all the info and updates.

Will PRG sell to someone who has a .mil address? Also has anyone dealt with scout base camp? I checked out Ashbury they charge tax on online orders.

I tried to order a SEV-48 cable for my 10C from Scout Base Camp. They showed it in stock and I called to confirm that. When they didn't ship (I needed it by a certain date), I called them back. They said that they didn't have it in stock and all of their Vectronix inventory had been returned to somebody in NC, probably APO. Needless to say, I didn't get my gear in time. It finally came in from PRG. I wouldn't waste my time with Scout Base Camp. It sounds like they don't actually have anything in stock. They're probably just a reseller online store. Everything seems to get drop shipped from somewhere else. I'm basing that on the fact that their price on the cable was $100 more than what PRG charged me.

Affirm. Jackie at PRG was pleasure to deal with. Once my cable arrived from Switzerland I had it in my hands the next day. I didn't even ask for overnight shipping. That's a good vendor.

I agree. I ordered my Terrapin from PRG about a year and a half ago, and it was one of the smoothest transactions I've ever had. Sorry to hear of the change.

Just a few things from my interactions with PRG recently

1. Regarding PRG only doing mil sales, I dont know the answer to that but I will follow up this week. When I spoke with Alina last week there was zero mention of this or any impact to my existing non-mil order. The great thing about PRG is that if Alina doesnt answer her phone and you leave a message or email, you will most likely hear from her within 24 hrs. She replied to me even while her OOO (Out Of Office) on PTO message was configured on email.
2. PRG is from my understanding is the distributor that both Mile High and EuroOptic get their Vectronix equipment from.
3. Ashbury is another distributor of Vectronix but does not get their stuff from PRG. Not sure if its a different distributor or Vectronix direct.
4. Regarding availability of Vectronix units right now, mainly Terrapin. - Vectronix has delayed the manufacturing and shipment of the Terrapin units and are being pretty vague with their distributors right now about when they are going to ship. There are some pretty large orders in with them from multiple US distributors and no one has received a ship date as of this past week mid week and Vectronix is not being forthcoming of ship dates or ETA.

I would be very surprised if Ashbury had very many of the Terrapins in stock right now, Im sure everyone that sells them has a few but I believe stocks are pretty low depending on the color you want. Also, Ashburys site states that Terrapins will ship in 1-4 weeks of your order date which also leads me to believe they dont have many. I would love to get ahold of someone there and ask them but Ive had zero luck getting through to them on the phone the last 7 times Ive called.

I would say at this point its just a waiting game until they start showing up. I wouldnt get too worried about not getting one just yet as they wont be going away for a few months yet.
