I think there was a very brief USMC late summer romance with the Lee Metford back about the time of the Krag.

I'm talking about the 6mm Lee Navy in the 1895 Winchester (Lee-Navy). The rifle could use some safety features, but the round was phenomenal for it's day. That was about the time of the Krag, shortly after.
