ok so i've been tooling around the sight looking for ways to improve my rifle and get into precision shooting. been a novice for years just plinking around at the local range. i am a marine so you know i can shoot an m16 platformed rifle. but i've always had a huge hard-on for bolt action shooting. well long story short my father passed down to me a m700 vs sf 22-250

had the gun for a while, shoots just fine the way it is but i can't leave anything alone. SO thanks to the forum and it's AWESOME stickies i just ordered a pretty good list of goodies for the old boom stick...

-millet 4-16x 50mm scope, i know it's cheap but i'm broke so
-millet 30mm medium height rings
-nightforce one peice 20 moa base
-BC 13 & 44 caps
-harris S-BRM bipod
-last but not least a shooters mat/case 2 in 1

on the to do list:
-kydex cheek rest
-floor plate & aics mag
-if i don't do the cheek rest then i'll save up for a new stock, maybe a B&C medalist adjustable, but not quite sure yet
-jewell trigger

hoping to shoot target/varmint/small deer @ 100-500 yards. i have no doubt i can accomplish my goals thanks to SH! i should be updating this thread as i get parts in. hoping to sling some lead by the first week of march

Definitely not starting behind the ball, that is a helleva nice rifle. IMHO try a Triad stock pad before drilling into that stock.

oh i know, and my dad picked it up by chance. a customer came through his store and sold it to him for dirt cheap, barely broken in. he can't really shoot any more due to a bad wreck so i get to enjoy it now. and i'll give that stock pad a look, wasn't too crazy about drilling into that nice stock.

kinda already am. was obsessed with pistol shooting. i have an xdm .45 that i liked to see how far out i could hold a group with. and i have a match target car-15 that i shoot iron sights with. so i think this is just the next step in evlolving my hobby haha.

so got a few ?'s...

gonna be mounting/sighting my own scope, so what's a good laser bore sight to use?(there's only about a million of them out there)and should this be done with a rifle vise? if so is there any particular vise type/style that would be best? i'v found everything from $30 rigs to $100+ rigs. since i'm broke 30 bux seems a lot more appealing to me haha.

well nevermind you guys are too slow. i went ahead and bought myself a hyskore vise, torque driver, hammer/punch(mainly for pistols & AR), laser bore sight, magnetic level etc.

pics or it didn't happen....

with the harris that just came today as well

scope, rings, and base should be here tue-wed. already got some hornady 55gr pills.

oh btw just playing around with the vise and what not i found that the old scope wasn't leveled and that it didn't have any loctite on any of the screws. you could also see where the scope had been walking through the rings. i can almost guarantee whoever did that job didn't torque anything down to the proper specs and/or had no idea what they were doing. just goes to show that you should never trust anybody else's work.

Light locktite on the bases, none on the rings, just torque lightly. If you shoot from a bench, use just bags, no bi-pod. Sometimes they jump off hard sufaces. If you want to use the pod, go on the ground. Have fun.

alright will do. and yeah the pod is for going prone. the range by my house has the option to shoot prone anything over 100 yards. plus i like prone over sitting, it's easier on my back.

Send the laser bore sighter back and save your money for more useful goodies.

You can bore sight through the bore and it can be done in less time than it takes to set your laser system up.

yeah i thought about doing that. and if you sight it at close range aren't you supposed to put two dots on your target? one for the scope reticle and one for the bore? spaced roughly the same distance apart as the scope and bore?

well got the scope mounted and sighted in.

that was the 2nd target @ 100, first target was about 6-8 rounds at the 50. i was pretty pleased with my bore sight, first shot was about 3" high and maybe 1" right. at the 100 the lack of a good cheek weld was extremely apparent, a good follow through with my head held still was damn near impossible. i eventually found a decent position and was able to see bullet strike. did my shots in 3 round groups, which all of them were fairly tight and you can kinda see how the groups progressed as i adjusted. overall pretty pleased with the new scope.

oh, one thing i noticed is the illumination feature is damn near useless. i was shooting at dusk and it did almost nothing for me...except giving me a headache. i turned it off after the first box and left it off.

you wont regret that millet, mine spent a short time on my .308 until i grabbed their 25x for a steal. its currently on a buddies .30-06 and shoots well for the tiny price tag.
