The best smart phone app for measuring straight line distance

there was a similiar thread going on in one of these sections. i've tried what was suggested, and downloaded a few more free ones.

map o meter, mapmeter, distance tool, measure your land, and simple distance calculator are the ones i got, uses google maps, place a point from one spot to the other and they give you the distance.

i like the mapmeter, map o meter, and simple distance calculator as the maps zoom right in to my present GPS location, the others i have to zoom in more manually to get to my gps coordinates. which if hunting, one may not have the time to tinker with that. at the range, it really doesn't matter

simple distance calculator has a nice "crosshair" feature to really pinpoint the from and to, the others you have to touch and may be a little off, but not all that much. just depends on how anal you get.

measure your land gets a little more technical, but you can save previously measured areas in a folder.

some you can pinpoint your location using gps, then drive out to where you set your target, take a reading, and the straight line is then calculated. can be used to measure how far or how close you still have to go from the firing line to drop a target. i haven't tinkered with that yet.

don't know if they are the best, since they're free, get them, play with them, keep what you want and dump the others.

I still can't find one for iPhone that will let you push a Button at the target then drive to the firing position and then push the button again and get a straight line measurement. I have found more than one that will work if you can drive in a straight line from target to target. If I'm going way out I can't drive in a straight line to all my targets.

I mentioned MotionX in another thread.

It is very easy to do, here are the directions...

Use what ever map format you like. Then...

1. Mark a waypoint at your target
2. Mark a waypoint at your shooting position
3. In map view, make sure you are zoomed out enough to see both waypoints in the screen.
4. See the three little horizontal lines in the top left corner? Touch them to bring up Map Options.
5. Scroll down the options to find the measuring tool and select that.
6. Now move the green circle to your shooting position waypoint and the red circle to the target waypoint. The distance between is given in Ft. at the top left corner. You can go into the display menu and change the values from ft. to yards or ridiculous values like meters and kilometers.

I also use this feature to find distance without waypoints by changing the map format to Google Sat. and measuring between landmarks. If you still need a hand feel free to PM me.

Reall, ANY GPS app should be able to do this by setting two seperate waypoints at the shooting location and the target location and then ask your GPS to navigate from one to the other. It will give you the distance between the two waypoints.
Most guys on my SAR team use MotionX which has the measuring tool allowing you to measure distances without going out and physicaly marking the waypoints yourself by way of draging a set of crosshairs between Sat. Images.

I feel like a MotionX salesman, but in reality this app just works really well. Just use it and play with it and it will sell itself.

Todd,
Try "Distance Map" v7.5. for I Phone. It works by dropping pins.
I throw my shooting mats out, drop a pin and drive out and
place targets. The updated version you don't even have to drop a
pin every time, it tells you your distance "real time".
Good luck
