Not the best movie I've ever seen but I loved it. Completely loved it!
For the first time in a while someone made a great action movie without stupid amounts of CGI.
Most of it is totally old school action, the movie feels fun throughout like Die Hard or Cobra.
Glad someone is keeping it real in Hollywood.

Re: The Expendables

A fellow Hider here did a lot of the sound work on that one.

PS. stop knocking the CGI shit. Do you really want to go back to stop motion animation and hand rotoscoping?

Re: The Expendables

I like CGI when its a sci fi movie or when its called for but not just for the sake of doing it. I like stuntmen and actors willing to jump out of a window.

Re: The Expendables

I don't think anyone in this biz does it for the sake of doing it. The perceived "over use" of visual effects these days can be directly attributed to:

1. Visual Effects sell - Take a look at the highest grossing films and which ones don't rely heavily on visual effects.

2. The "fix it in post" mantra has been taken to the extreme with CGI. Few younger directors and visual effects supervisors seem to realize that 10 minutes of prep can save weeks and tens of thousands of dollars to fix a shot.

3. The latest generation of directors and visual effects supervisors have gotten most of the experience with CGI instead of practical effects (ie miniatures).

4. Directors think they can do anything and so they come up with ridiculously unrealistic camera moves which challenge the effects artists to accomplish (faster, cheaper and better each year).

5. We love what we do and have a hard time saying "no". It also doesn't help that when we say "no, that's a ridiculous request" the production just takes their money to another studio or overseas where they get 40% tax incentives. The funny part is that often when they do take the work somewhere else, it eventually comes back and we have to finish it in less time. That's how crappy effects shots make it in to movies. "The Day After Tomorrow" was a good example of this - more than half of the shots were started over or finished by other studios.

Re: The Expendables

I thought the movie was enjoyable. Jet Li was funny. He isn't a Jackie Chan in the comedy department, but still did a good job. Jason Statham's fight scene at the b ball court was obviously put together in segments but still pretty good. The whole movie was over the top, but what do you expect from Stallone. I liked Stallone and Schwarzenegger ripping on each other in their scene with Willis.
