I am a sniper team leader and we are about to turn in our M24's to be refitted from a .308 to 300 winmag. Have any active snipers out there already had their M24 rifles converted and give me some personal experience of what to expect and how I may better start preparing my team for the change.

Not in the military, but I am sure there will be information and training made available to you and your team or am I just being nieve? I dont know what all is done, if its a simple barrel/bolt swap, or a full on rebuild. Odds are you will be given new ballistic data, and then train you are as familiar with the new change as you were with the .308.

They're going to "school" you on the .300winmag.If you haven't "schooled" yourself on the new round already, you should.Just my .02cents

If you are really asking, get with about any oda team and pay attention, they use both 308 and 300wm. Civilian side, just ask any of us who shoot the 300 and 308 at distance. Mainly, more muzzle blast, noise ,recoil, heat, slightly heavier overall weight, advantages are, more range, slightly better windage at range, study ballistics and get real world dope for your location. I have yet to see any 300wm in service by reg ad mil, I have handled 300wm m24 retrofits in BAF but they were not being fielded yet.

If you are at a location for group/oda then I would talk to them and maybe they will let you go out and feel for yourself the differences.
As posted above there is noticably more felt recoil but that is to be expected as with everything else that comes with it.

Re: The new M24 conversion from .308 to 300 winmag

This is a good and bad thing for you:

Good: you should be pumped about going from .308 to .300 win mag, 1/3 the of the normal wind call for .308 and being able to push target engagements out 1200 meters.

Bad: barrel life; make sure your unit has a plan for re-barreling way more often. Mil Spec .300 win mag ammo is way hot and burns barrels out with a quickness. Seen barrels go out as soon as 950 rnds and last as long as 1800 rnds; just depends how you run them.

that's just my two cents, and get with your local ODA.. they will give you a hand.

In 2009 the longest range confirmed killed by an American sniper without a .50cal was with a 300WinMag. It was one of our sniper's detached from our HHT. Not sure the exact range, but it was over a mile. Made that kid's career with that shot.

This was in A-stan. It's a far more capable round than the .308, or NATO 7.62.
