A bit more than a month ago, I bought a Nightforce NSX 8-32 scope from a Hide member and sent off two USPS Money Orders via Priority Certified mail, in one of those USPS window envelopes. That letter, and my money, are still listed as being In Transit to the destination.
And, contrary to what I was told about USPS Money Orders and how easy it is to get your money refunded if they are lost, getting my money back is going to be a long, annoying process. To begin, I can't even cancel the money orders and file for reimbursement until at least 45 days from the issue date. Then I'm told that the USPS could take up to 60 days to finally reimburse me. (I hope I misunderstood that part of the explanation.) I'm fortunate that I filled-out the money orders completely and kept all the receipts.
Basically, then, it seems the USPS can use my money, interest-free, for more than 3 months.
According to the USPS employees here, the most secure way is to send anything via Registered mail, because it is more closely tracked. It is, of course, also expensive.
This situation has been a bit of a rude awakening for me, and I'll be much more careful of using the USPS and its money orders.
So how did I finally get the scope, which arrived today? I scrounged up the cost of the scope (again) and sent a check via Registered mail and added enough extra so the seller could send the scope also via Registered mail. This added time to the transaction since Registered mail is slower than standard mail, plus my check had to clear. (Fortunately I wasn't in a hurry, since I'm recovering from shoulder surgery and can't do anything related to shooting, anyway.) Had I sent a check the first time and the letter was lost, I could have gone to my bank, cancelled the check in a matter of minutes, and had the replacement in the mail. Fortunately, the seller was patient, understanding, and helpful.
