I'll admit that on the surface "The Road" may be a little weird or hard to take for some...but if you ever stop to think about what life might be like when TEOTWAWKI comes along then you should read the book and/or watch the movie. I think the movie was well done. Viggo Mortensen is one of my favorite actors, not to mention a great cameo appearance by Robert Duvall.
Comments added: Based upon some comments of others, I would recommend that you read the book first. If you like the book, then see the movie and I think you will like it or at least understand it. If you don't like the book, don't waste your time on the movie. I saw several folks get up and walk out of the movie and I can understand why. Bottom line is the movie portrays one possible future for humanity that may be a little harsher scenario than most would like to contemplate. Some of the images might be too graphic and gritty for those too sensitive to handle it or who think humans could never resort to creating such devistation and treating each other so bad. I still thought the movie was well done. The cinematography does a great job at capturing the depressing and dangerous circumstances. It's not a happy story and it's not full of great special effects that many movie goers today expect to see in every movie. But it is an interesting and thought provoking story and provides some images that will stick with you.

I think story is an interesting take on parent/child dynamics.
I also think the basic premise of the cataclism is not realistic, but contrived to suit the human story.
Finally, having bought the DVD, I have concluded it was not worth the bucks, and probably will never watch it again. I don't go for unrelenting depression. Not even a great cast can save a flop of this magnitude.
I won't give it away, but rather keep it as an object lesson about knowing more about what I'm buying before I plunk down the buckage.

I read the book a few years ago and still have some images that have stuck with me. Not really sure if I want to watch the movie.

I read the book and watched the movie, did not get a greenie global warming feeling out of it at all.
It was a dark movie and a dark book. I liked it but once was enough.

I enjoyed the movie, but nowhere near as much as the book. For post apocalyptic movies, "The Book of Eli", which came out near the same time made for a much better movie IMHO.
