An LE buddy of mine sent this to me, thought it was cool.

Rules For The Gunman

1). Don't carry the gun to make you a man. Carry because you are in fact a man.

2). Always carry your gun regardless of social pressures

3). If you can't physically carry a gun, always have a knife.

4). Whenever you carry a gun, also carry a knife...and some spare ammunition.

5). Carry the gun you can use best regardless of social fashion

6). Make sure you are good with that gun through continual and obsessive practice

7). Don't bluff or threaten with the gun. If you pull it, be certain you are justified and willing to use it.

8). Using it means shooting the other man or men in the chest and/or the face. Yes, it means killing.

9). If you can avoid having to shoot, it is a good thing, but do not second guess yourself once it has begun.

11). To facilitate the former, do not go to stupid places with stupid people to do stupid things at stupid times.

12). If you are involved in such activities, take a team with you....and rifles.

13). The default should be to mind your own business.

14). The only time minding your own business is superceded by getting involved is if what you see shocks the conscience of humanity and needs to be stopped.

15). The amount of violence you can justify and the number of rules you can break is directly proportionate to the level of evil displayed by your adversary.

16). Never apologize for using violence. Not only is it indicative of weakness but also of a lack of moral standing.

I agree with all of those but I personally take some issue with the parts highlighted in red. I rarely carry CCW but when I do it's because I'm in stupid places I don't want to be or fishing (aggressive off-leash dogs) and even though I may be justified in shooting someone, I don't trust society enough to make that judgement for me so I make it myself by having the mindset that my CCW is for imminent danger to me or my family only. Rule 13 is my SOP. Sounds shitty but I think defending a stranger with a gun is absolutely out of the question, I'll intervene and have many times in the past but never with force, that's what cops are for.

Thoughts?

‘All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing’ (or words to that effect)

I think that if someone would have followed that very same train of thought, they wouldn't be in the clusterfuck of a mess that they currently find themselves in.

First thing they teach you as a cop is don't get involved in petty bullshit while off duty. Unless it is a VIOLENT felony being committed against someone else, the job doesn't want you getting involved beyond being a good witness and calling 911. I agree with this wholeheartedly.

I agree with the sentiment above but I can't hinge my family's future on a 'modern' jury. Not only that but by stepping into a strangers aide with force removes the 'self-defense' argument which I think would get a lot more traction than a "Good Samaritan" argument. Like I said above, it is shitty but I think the state of our society forces/creates this position.

I totally agree, he screwed the pooch big time and will be lucky if he gets off but to that point I think he went into it on a somewhat community inspired 'power-trip' like those douche bag mall-cops all the while making the decision to ignore Rule 13 above. Betcha he's wishing he'd just made the call and then went home and watched American Idol.

I guess, my mindset is a lot like your police training, i.e. don't get involved

Those three little words that are so often said to but so infrequently acknowledged by such types:

OBSERVE, REPORT, FADE ...

Re: The Rules for the Gunman

I carry all the time. I've been robbed twice in my life, before any states enacted CCW laws. Now, even though I'm strapped I have thought through the sequence such that I'll give up the cash and go along with the program unless or until I decide the assailant is going to injure me or a family member, at which point it all changes. Money is replaceable but I won't be murdered for entertainment value. As to third parties, if I were certain that serious bodily injury was on the agenda, that would have to be on a case by case basis.
