all of the thermals i have used have rectangular sensors and displays. why not something shaped more like a person's pupil?

It’s coming in some systems. It’s just old fashioned thinking frankly.
The issue is wasted germanium IMHO. Round lenses focus LWIR onto dead space in microbolimiter cavity if the sensor isn’t round.

Well it's just a thermal TEE VEE. 
I aint seen no round TEE VEE's yet and they've been around since September 7th, 1927 (about 95 years)
So old fashion thinking as The King stated, still prevails today.

Round sensors are wasteful to produce with current wafer production methods.
True but then TVs are usually watched with two eyes that overlap in the middleWell it's just a thermal TEE VEE.
