Night Vision Thermal vision systems...

Re: Thermal vision systems...

I mostly use thermal for detection and i^2 for shooting. However, I'd love to have a tws II medium with a 640 core, or a cnvd-t. Im currently in the process of up grading my 160 viewer to a flir 307. I use all my gear chasing pigs.

We have them at work. They work fine for what they are.

Re: Thermal vision systems...

Im trying to decide between the FLIR 324 and the 307. Maybe you guys can help me. I like to night hunt coyotes in Eastern IL over harvested farmground and occasionally in the woods. What I plan to do is to use the FLIR unit to spot the dogs and then engage them w the PVS-14 and an ir laser/illlum. The problem is that Midwestern coyotes can be a bit spooky and call shy so you have to set up on a stand and get lucky or road hunt till you find a good spot. Id like to be able to pull off the road and scan the open fields and hedgelines and then move in on foot should I see a target. Better chance for sucess. That said, I need to spot and identify dogs probably 500 to 800 yards from the lane (at the least), so as not to spook them. All of the info on these units mention distances to identify or spot a human, but Im curious about smaller game such as coyotes or coons for that matter. Having used these units in practical applications, I though you guys could give me a "no shitter" appraisal of the 2 units. Id love to go with the 324 for cost reasons, but I dont want to get something that doesnt do the job I require. Tactic-als, I hope Im not hijacking your post, but judging by your initial statement, maybe this info would be of interest to you as well.

Re: Thermal vision systems...

You want a 307 for your application. The 324 has to wide of a FOV to spot dogs at 500-800 yards. A buddy I hog hunt with has a 307, and in good conditions he's spotted pigs right at a mile. The narrow FOV gives you more magnification and much more range then the 324. I can remember one night using the 307 when we made a stalk across a freshly cultivated corn field. We spotted what we thought were pigs around 700 yards out. We were pretty pissed after the hike finding out they were coons. We use pvs-14's to navigate and spot, then shoot with d-760's or clip on's. I^2 can't touch thermal for detection purposes.

The only issue with the units right now is that the 30hz systems went restricted about a month ago. All that's available for civi sales right now is the 9hz systems. The 9hz image is going to be very choppy when scanning fields compared to the 30.

We knew the 9h was about export, no 30s, you say this is now "no 30 for civi sale", is there a link where we can see this?

Re: Thermal vision systems...

Hi! Trying to locate a reasonably affordable thermal night vision scope. I have an EoTech EXPS-3 NV compatible red dot I'd like to use it with. Currently have the EoTech 3x magnifier coupled with it on an FN SCAR light .223. Any thoughts? Thanks much, Jon

Re: Thermal vision systems...

I had the chance to use an Insight CNVD-T this winter and I can tell you right now it was bad ass but the price is out of this world! I used it for detection on hogs and yotes once I found what I was after I could mount it right in front of the scope for the kill shot. It has a built in reticle but there was no need to sight it in since we were mounting it on different rigs.

Here it is mounted in front of the trijicon 2.5-10 accupoint.

Re: Thermal vision systems...

Anyone had the chace to try the new ones OSTI is workingon that has NV with a thermal overlay?

Re: Thermal vision systems...

I've been playing with an L3 x200xp handheld unit for detection, which works well...

...and the an NV system for engaugement.

Basically, depending on your applicaion, the combo works well if you are the hunter, as opposed to the hunted (direct quote from my SF buddy).

PS... it was MUCH less expensive.

It looks like a nicer version of the L3 X200xp I have... come to think of it.

The X200xp is much more of a manual device (manual focus / gain), but is BDU pocket small, with a sensitivity of 50mK.
