Maggie’s Things to do in Petersburg, VA

My son graduates AIT on Tuesday from Fort Lee. Wife and I are here through basically Wednesday and are looking for a few extracurricular activities. We have spent the last few days visiting civil war battle sights. Problem is, seen one kinda seen them all. We have visited the museum of the confederacy and toured the confederate white house.

What other suggestions do you have? We are visiting the caves and caverns at Luray tomorrow. It is a 2 hour drive, but we will not likely visit ole Virginia for some time.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I was stationed at Norfolk for 8 years back in the day. I would suggest you drive over to Williamsburg and spend a day or so there and take a trip down to Norfolk and have a look around.

I live in Norfolk and there is a bit to see n the area. Williamsburg is a good stop. You have some stuff in downtown Norfolk, such as the McArthur center. Also a battleship. Go to Virginia Beach area and there is a bit to do there.

Shoot! One more week and I could have invited you to my place for a Spring turkey hunt!
Season starts this Saturday, and I'm about an hour from Petersburg. Had a nice gobbler in the yard yesterday and today.

It's supposed to rain quite a bit Monday, so outdoor activities won't be much fun.

It's a bit pricey, but this is a very cool place to visit and enjoy a great dinner.

If your driving to Luray, stop in Charlottesville; there's a lot to see and do. My recommendation would be the 1-University of Virginia, built by Thomas Jefferson and given to the state of Virginia, and 2- Monticello, his home. They are both on the US Register of National Historic Landmarks and I believe Monticello is on the World Register or some such. In the same area as Monticello is Ash Lawn the home of James Madison. Its less stunning than Jefferson's home but will give a good idea of colonial country living. There are a lot of great food places on our "Downtown Mall" which is the old main street now bricked over and lined with antique shops and restaurants. My favorite is the C&O on Water street. If I didn't have a friend coming into town for a couple of days I would give you the tour. Have fun.
