Think my buddy is disqualified from joining the military?

Hey guys, I wanted to ask around and see if anyone had experience in this. I've read the rules on scoliosis of the spine and what makes it disqualifying but I'm having a hard time getting an answer on what the requirements are post surgery. He had his scoliosis corrected with surgery while he was in high school and the two of us have been researching the possibility of joining recently. Since he doesn't have an account on here, I figured I would ask for him.

He had a rod put in place to correct his scoliosis and still maintains full physical activity other than he is limited in upper back flexibility bending forward. There isn't near as much flex that goes on here as compared to the lower back, so part of me thinks he could get a waiver, but wasn't sure.

When he talkes to recruiters back in high school they said as long as it doesn't limit he in PT, he should be fine. When I talked to one recently, he said to not even bother if he had had back surgery. He's a diesel mechanic by trade now and 24 years old, so he is plenty physically fit and had an active job. No restrictions on weight or movement.

Only way to know for sure is to talk to a recruiter, but regardless of what they say it'll come down to the doc at MEPS if he makes it that far. My initial guess would be "no fucking way" but I've learned to never assume when it comes Uncle Sugar. Keep in mind that there's a variation between branches on what they'll waive.

The PT test standards are all published.... if he can meet them, than that's a first step.

There used to be a pre-enlistment physical.... Probably still is. If he can pass that.... good to go.

And depending on what his MOS is going to be.... they may waiver things. If he wants to be a diesel mechanic, not a SF weapons Sgt... the waiver (if one is even needed) may be easier to achieve.

If he wants to serve... he can almost certainly find a way. If they won't have him, I know contractors over in Saudi and Kuwait making a mint as tank diesel and turbine mechanics. More than one way to skin a cat.

Well when I think about the money, I'll be taking a pay cut. When I think about the benefits, it's a little nicer but not much better since my wife is in the medical field. When I think about wanting to serve my country, I want to join. When I think of honoring my wife's opinion, I hesitate. It's a constant back and forth and my job requires me to weigh decisions every week, so I analize this crap haha.

Your chances of becoming a pilot without a college degree in any service but the Army are between zero and none.

If you don't have a degree, worry about getting one first. You can work on your commission at the same time if you get accepted into the AFROTC program at the university of your choice or into the USAF Academy. And if you already have a degree, you should be talking to the OCS (Officer Candidate School) recruiter (who is virtually always an officer himself).

DO NOT just enlist with a promise that you'll somehow become an officer.

And don't forget about the pilot-specific medical requirements.........

For being a pilot, that will be enough. But make sure you discuss every single detail about your move to OCS, as well as what is guaranteed and not guaranteed about flight training with the AF officer recruiter.

I'm about positive that the type of aircraft you might end up flying is not something that you'll be guaranteed. That will be decided both by your performance, your wishes, and the needs of the service (which trumps all).

I scored really high in my ASVAB as a HS senior and the local Army recruiters were like hobos on a hotdog trying to get me to enlist. When I told them that I had already obtained appointment to USNA they tried that same song and dance. No thanks......

If your concern about Spec Ops includes 'physical conditioning" than limit the type of aircraft that you think you want to fly to say a cargo or transport slow mover.

The frigging G training guys in the fast ships have to go through looks brutal. I for one would never have the cool nickname like "Maverick" awarded me. More likely I would be "Pukemaster", "Asleep at the Stick" or some such.

You say you are married. If you are going mil consider the fact that whatever friction you and Ms Love currently have in your life will likely be multiplied by a factor of 100 in the mil.

You will not be enlisting alone. If she is not as willing to sign the papers as you are consider what you want to do more....stay married or potentially wash out of flight school and end up regularly piloting a desk as OOD at a base maintenance wing in North Dakota.

Don't assume that you can get over vertigo......if you get accepted into flight trying and fail out, you are at the mercy of the AF for the duration. You're not just packing it up and going home because you now can't fly.

Make sure you can do the full ride no matter what.

Vertigo is one thing.

Having the physical ability to keep the blood in your body in some sort of flow to your brain when it wants to go to your feet seems to be the trick.

Google some of the videos of student pilots undergoing G training.

There is one out there "Takes G like a Boss" where the student pilot takes 8G or something like that for some allotted amount of seconds. That kids a superhuman.

Kind of funny the control guy tells him he wins a T shirt for performing the feat.

I guess the suit and other stuff help but there are lots of quick videos of student pilots going full asleep at lower G or reaching for the vomit bag.

Not peeing in your cheerios just noting that the MOS you are interested in is physical. Now is the time to be doing everything you can to get to where you need to be physically. If you go into the mil in top physical condition whenever it is time for PT you will be able to do so without dreading it.

So many people go into careers with a PT program and its one foot already in the grave when reveille sounds and they are dreading the next two hours of life because they have to PT. Those two hours will be your alone time if you are in good shape. That will be time you take away from the DI's or whoever is running the program. Take that time back for yourself.

It will be a little test for you. If you can commit to the PT program you may have the will to achieve your lofty goal. Either way doing some PT you will be better for it. Maybe the wife will run along with you.

Keep in mind that flight slots are the most coveted and sought after in any branch. There is a nearly endless supply of brilliant young men with advanced degrees in Engineering, Aeronautics, etc that are competing for a relatively miniscule number of positions. They have wanted to be pilots their whole lives and have structured their early lives for that one goal. It's one of those areas in the mil where the branches have zero incentive to make allowances or concessions, they simply don't have to.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread but I have a very similar question and don't feel like it warrants its own thread. I was born with an eye condition in my left eye that gives me very blurry vision. However I have 20/20 vision in my right eye, which is also my dominant eye. That plus me being right handed means I have no trouble shooting a rifle, in fact in terms of combat sniping would probably be the easiest for me. People often close their left eye anyways. Do you think with this condition I have any chance of becoming a sniper or let alone just joining the military? I highly doubt it but just thought I'd ask.

From what I've read you'll want corrective surgery for that. Some MOS require 20/20, some don't, some say corrective surgery is ok, others way you won't know until the military checks it out. Probably can join if you had a way to correct it (contacts, glasses) since plenty of others do, but for sniper school I would strongly believe you need it corrected via surgery; but I'm sure some former military guys on here have a better answer for you.

Some MOS (or Navy NEC) are subject to disqual if you have had corrective surgery in your eyes. Not a good thing to subject an eye that has been surgically modified by a questionably qualified surgeon (not in surgical skill but in his knowledge of what the eye will be subjected to later on) to rapid pressure changes associated with changes in either altitude or submergence. On submarines, we would ventilate the boat to outside atmosphere and change pressure inside the boat VERY quickly. We're talking 50torr pressure changes in under a minute. That isn't that much you think, but it is about 1 psi.

So the only way to treat my disorder is therapy where you basically cover your good eye and do various things with the blurry eye, it sounds easy enough but imagine trying to read a book but every word needs about 10 seconds of focus to understand it. So after an hour or two it really takes a toll on you. As a kid I did said therapy and my vision improved somewhat from about 20/400 to 20/200. But I was a little late to the party and apparently for people older than 10 even with therapy you're likely never to have 20/20 vision.

So is there really no exceptions to the vision requirements? Maybe like a course I could take to show I can do everything just fine and get a special recommendation? How can a 4'10 tranny who has never touched a gun join but not me... Anyone should be allowed to serve their country if they're fit for duty. What would happen if I took the test where you cover your eye but just peeked through my fingers? Would anyone even give a shit?

What if you can't peek through your fingers and one of your buddies is depending on you to have two good eyes to keep him safe but in fact you don't?

There are things that you can do. There are even contract civilian jobs that have you wearing a uniform and for all intents and purposes you are mil but you just are not mil. My friends brother is a mechanic for the guard and he wears all the gear, has gone to Iraq, carries an ID card noting his equivalent rank.

Help out at a VA, the Fisher House, found a construction company specializing in construction for special needs vets.

Dont let your good motivations and intentions be wasted.

I was a USMC recruiter last decade, the manual changed from MPPM to the EPM, but the standards are still pretty much the same. Enlistment wise, if you have one eye that still corrects to 20/20 and the other to 20/400, you can be waivered. You wouldn't even make it into the platoon, that much I can guarantee, and certainly wouldn't make it past the school check-in as the instructors verify the standards being met in your med record. My eyes are shit, 20/200 uncorrected with a diopter around 4.5 and a bit of colorblindness too, and I buggered my first eye exam at MEPS when I enlisted, they ran me as 20/30 in one eye while I see 20/15 with contacts just fine and easy 20/20 with glasses. But I damn near got booted out of school on Day 1 until I could produce the documentation and also smoke the eye chart in the instructor office, but I did and I graduated high shooter two months later. Recon, Rangers, SF, all the rest of the SOCOM type stuff that would be infantry based shooter type jobs, they'll all be the same. You could probably be a standard grunt, not that there's any shame in that, nor is there even in being a "Water Dog", but sniper in the military would be extremely unlikely.

So go forth, join and serve our great land, stomp bad guys and learn how to police call the fuck out of the barrack's quad while you're at it. And who knows, I might just be that guy who told you that you couldn't do it and you proved me wrong. That would seriously kick ass...

OP, your buddy with the back problem is in the same boat, and needs to show up at the recruiter's office with his paperwork. They will send it up for a med read, the doc at MEPS will advise from there. Many recruiters believe, wrongly, that any plates, pins and screws are a "PERM DQ - No Waiver" item, and they're not. I enlisted one young man that had some significant hardware in his arm, even the MEPS Liaison looked at me like I was wasting his time by having him there, but he got his waiver and even made it into MARSOC. In your friend's case, it will be the doc's definition of "severe" and whether the corrective surgery will impact his ability to perform, specifically with a load. Of course, I'm talking Marine Corps here, it's what I know, so the other branches may be more or less stringent on it.

Like others have said, it's up to the doctor at MEPS. I'm in the navy, so my knowledge on other branches isn't so great. But suppose you're trying to get in to the Army. If active duty won't take him, try National Guard. They've got different requirements (I believe) in getting in, yet they all go to the same basic training. My brother couldn't get in to active duty Army, but the National Guard would take him. And once there, MAYBE you can go active right away, or later on. It may not be what he wants, but it's a foot in the door.

As long as the surgery was successful, doesn't cause any pain or significant limitations, I'd think it would be okay. If the concern is that he's got metal in his body, I got in the Navy, and I've got steel plates, screws, and wires in my chest; broke my sternum in high school wrestling. There really aren't any limitations involved with what happened to me, though. I also had ankle surgery, which does limit me a little. But I got in.

Another option is if it doesn't work out, go to a different MEPS. Also, try to get a referral (or whatever) from the doctor who did the work initially, and ask their opinion on if your buddy has limitations.

All MEPS talk to each other, the SSN would be flagged as having been previously reviewed so they would pull that in anyhow, and unless there is new information to be reviewed they will 99% likely only give the same answer.

But definitely beneficial is a letter of final release from care by the providing doctor if it isn't already in the medical records as the MEPS doctor is going to be most concerned with the final prognosis of the injury/condition. From there, if at least the condition appears to be possibly waiverable, they will have you come in for a consult from a specialist, then will give their recommendation from there whether it is eligible for waiver by the service's medical authority. Waiver packages also need weight of recommendation letters from coaches, supervisors and other disinterested people who may be able to speak credibly on physical abilities. Basically dazzle them with how you're now Steve Austin (Six Million Dollar Man type, not the wrestler) and can do anything asked and then some.

Look into the Army Warrant program if you want to fly. We are so short handed on 64 pilots it's not funny. Bonuses like the AF are supposedly coming down the pipe and you can apply as a civilian. Street to seat or high school to flight school is what we call it. You may not take such a significant pay cut jumping right in as a Warrant. With BAH, ACIP, and base pay as a W01 you will earn around $4500 a month starting out. By the time your 6 year obligation is up (not including flight school) you will be making around 6500.

It's not a bad gig but if momma isn't someone who can operate independently and deal with a butt load of stress, you're asking to become a statistic. I have 2200 nights where I haven't came home and I am at 16 years, run that number by her and see what her reaction is. My wife is a saint and receives a thorough fart box tonguing regularly.

Way back during my USNA years, you get one summer (between sophomore and jr years) where you spend a week each in some base belonging to each of the major warfare specialties doing their thing to see what might interest you after commissioning. In my time that was the summer of 1986 (guess what year Top Gun came out). When we got to NAS Pensacola every swinging dick without glasses wanted to hop on a T-34 and maybe a T-2 in the worst possible way. Me, wearing glasses since 16, gave no fucks about it all since I didn't want to be a backseater anyway. So when they asked for volunteers to hop on a TH-57 I was one of the few who raised their hand. Tell you what, that was fun as hell.
