thinking about a custom 338 rifle

just looking for some build ideas for a custom 338 rifle been shotting at 500-600 metres with 308 for a while now but wanting to push it out further. I was thinking about a rem 700 and an 338 acuracy international ax stock for it but im sure there are better ideas out there than that also suggestions for glass would be good to.

I would advise you to take an intermediate step. I'm secure enough in my manhood to say that a 338 lapua is a little to much for this hobbiest. You don't want to sink a bunch of money into a project that you will regret later. Even big and experienced shooters can develop a bad flinh with the 338. I say try a standard or short 300 mag for a while. I'm betting you will enjoy it more.

I shot a 300 mag for about 7 years and recently went to a 7STW. Work your tolerance of recoil up the caliber ladder. Don't get the biggest because it's the baddest.

How far can you shoot distance wise? You can load a 300 Win Mag to get you out to 1500 yards/ 1370 meters. I wouldn't get a .338 unless you can stretch it's legs. Before you get another rifle stretch the .308 out to 900 meters on a regular basis and work on reading the wind.

I 300 mag with a barrel that can support the 240 smk is sick.

I was looking at Remmy XCR in 338 but ran across a great deal on a Sako TRG in 338 Lapua.. Prior to the biggest thing I had shot was a Remmy 30-06.. The Sako has less hit than the 30-06 to me.. The Muzzle Brake is a huge aid in the big Magnum and I would not want to shoot it without it.. I have never shot past about 300 yards so far but mangling steel plates at 250 or so is a blast.. It is True that to do the 338 justice it needs to stretch it's legs but you "can" still get up close and personal with targets and it is just as happy...

It is a balst to shott and the immediate environment around the round when it goes boom is truly exhilerating..

its not an immediate thing the rifle would be wasted on my talent atm. im looking to build a custom rifle in the the future once i get godd at all of the ranges my 308 can reach. i just got to fire one a couple of days ago and it was fuuuun, anyways ill give the 300. win mags and the 30-06 a look in first i was just interested in 338 because the ballistics on the bullet look awesome

yeh ill definently keep that in mind cause definently the more i think about it the applications for a 338 for the cost of the rifle and the ammo dont look all that good

I say if you want a 338 Lapua get one.. Yes the ammo is expensive but what isn't.. IF you just want to hear a bang and hit something 22lr is the way to go.. I get the "Wow that ammo is expensive!!" card played on me everytime I tell someone about the 338 Lapua and most of them are shaking their head while getting in their King Ranch or Dodge Cummins or Duramax that has never had a trailer ball stuck into the reciever hitch on it. OR they might be pumping $100.00 worth of gas in their $40,000.00 bass boat to go joy riding for a couple of hours..

+1 for you rick.Every body out there has something out there that they will put the cash in to.And not bat an eye for it just weather you want it bad enough or not.And there's always just the go cheep one's to.IF YOU WANT IT GET IT.I have Stiller Tac 338 coming and it will be a 338 LM or Norma or 300 Hulk.Because that's what I want.
