Hello all, I have been a lurker till now, this is my first post. I am looking for a 308 to add to my collection. Problem is I plan on using this for bench shooting and Im sure I will be dragging it around the sticks hunting with my son, as he will use my 30-06 (which is what I have always used for hunting). I was thinking of a 22" fluted heavy barrel with a pistol grip composite stock of some kind (dosent have to be a pistol grip, I just prefer them). I imagine this will weigh almost 10 lbs with optics. Can anyone recommend a rifle that is worth it's weight in accuracy? Am I insane to carry a rifle like this hunting? Looking to not spend over 1000 for the stick, Ill worry about optics later. Does the Remy 700 come like this? Open to all sugestions, Ill buy used if somone has somthing like this for sale. Thank you everyone.

welcome to the hide! kinda hard to stay at the weight.. but look at the bell and carlson light tactical models. or buy a remington 700 sps tactical it has a 20 inch barrel and a hogue over mold stock, with what i would see as kind of a pistol grip. but the stock is a piece of shit. i would go with the sps tactical in a light tactical stock and u would have some money left over for some other shit to upgrade it.

A remmy LTR will get you in there, it comes with the HS precision stock 7.5 without scope.

Personally, I have an sps-t with 20" bbl and I am currently in the process of making a psuedo mini sendero.

I have several stocks, barreled action with Redfield revolution:
In a B&C m40 is weighs over 10 lbs.
In a walnut varmint stock comes to 9.5 lbs
In the sps-v stock it is 8.5 lbs. (not my best choice because they just are not stiff enough).

A B&C A1 comes in at 2.25 lbs, but I am going to look hi and low for an LTR takeoff.

PSW came out with a light hunter for med contour rifles, only thing is the price tag. http://www.shootingtimes.com/2011/11/07/video-new-precision-stock-works-rifleman-stock/

Thats a sweet stock. Wondering, does anyone have any experience with the Savage 10FCP-K 308 LE Rifle, Its got a 24" 1-10 twist fluted Barrel, accustock and trigger and a muzzle break I think. It gos for alittle under 800. Is this a good gamble? Thanks for the welcome!

I've got two Savages in .308. Both are BVSS's though...I sold the factory barrels and installed CNC machined recoil lugs and custom barrels. I'm being converted into a Savage fan....you can easily swap barrels in less than 5-10 minutes. So..If you got the 10FCP-K and weren't happy with the accuracy...you can swap to a custom barrel. My long range .308 has a 30" bull barrel 1:10" twist. My hunting rig has a 26" Varmint comtour 1:10" twist. Both barrels do exceedingly well with 175-185 gr. bullets which will reach out to the 1,000 yard targets.

Good luck...I've been more than satisfied with the three Savage centerfire rifles I own. I think they're giving Remington and others some pretty stiff competition IMHO.

Re: thinking about a new 308

I think the either Remington or Savage would both fit the bill fine. I have never owned a Remmy but I can say Savage knows what they are doing! I bought a Stevens 200, new barrel, Choate Tactical stock and now I've got an amazing looking rifle that shoots great! Now I will say it is over 10lbs I think it came out at around 13.6lbs but thats with a varmint contour barrel and the stock isn't the lightest thing in the world! Good luck with your build!
