Found this rifle and think I may purchase as my first bolt action .308. Looking for any opinions good/bad or otherwise. I think the price is right and it looks like a good rifle. Ive read some of the Ruger thread and they seem to be pretty popular. I am learning llong range shooting and this would be a starter rifle.
Thanks

I have been looking at them as well for a beat around brush gun.
Until I picked up a CVA Cascade recently, the are comparatively priced but the cascade is a much better rifle in my opinion.
The couple I handled had a very good trigger as factory adjusted but will go lower the stock was also considerably better.

First question is what do want this rifle to do? Are you looking to hunt, plink or what? May I ask what is driving you to the 308? It is a great cartridge but there may be better depending on your plans.

Looking for a first long range gun. Thinking .308 ( aware of drop ect... compared to 6.5) because of ammo price. Im sure i will be using alot while learning. Currently the longest I can shoot somewhat accurately is 300yds ( 20"bull barrell ar 15 ) I dont want to spend too much as Im sure eventually I will go with something way more expensive/accurate. At this point I plan to spend more on optic than rifle.
Eventually I'll pass it down to the kids or hunt with it.

The rugers are nice. We all have our definitions of a long range rifle. This to me would fit the hunting rifle category better. But in that price range it be a start.

Next decent step up would be a tikka CTR but a lot more money.

How that barrel would handle heat would be another question to

One of the other considerations I had with this is that parts are relatively easy to come by. Im sure aftermarket barrels, bolts ect will be available in the near future if not already.
The Howa 1500 barreled actions Brownells sells is another excellent option.
Pretty good aftermarket support as well.

I'd get a .308 Savage, Winchester or Remington. The Savage will cost you less and is quite accurate but there's a lot more aftermarket stuff for the Winchesters and Remingtons. I recommend a .308 because you can share ammo with a FAL, HK-91, M1A and a Garand (rebarreled for .308) all rifles which any collector should have in his collection. Lots of surplus ammo is also available for plinking. In addition, the .308 is plenty of cartridge for medium and large game if the shot is placed well.
