Thinking of rebarrelling my DPMS 308...

I have recently decided that I am going to rebarrel my DPMS 308 because the performance has not been what I expected. I want the gun to shoot at least MOA, and it is currently about 2 MOA.

I know many people have had good luck with the factory performance, especially on the 24" barrels, but my gun is not one of them. I bought the gun used, round count is unknown. It had the 24" bull cut and recrowned to 20". I just think the barrel is shot out.

I know I can get the stock DPMS SASS barrel or the 24" bull barrel cheap, real cheap (same price for both). I want the gun to be compact (I'm thinking 18" barrel), but do I get the SASS barrel or do I buy the 24" bull and cut it down to 18"?

I know I'll probably get 10 responses, send it to GAP, put a Kreiger on it, etc, but I don't think that is the best solution for the problem, especially since I have seen how good some of the factory barrels shoot.

Another determining factor is the 'Bull 24' comes with a rifle length gas system which I like better than the Mid-Length the SASS has, but the SASS is already 18" and threaded.

Given the options, what would you do?

+1 on the FA Titan barrel.

I put one on my LR-308 with one of FA's matching bolts, and it shoots well under an inch with developed handloads at 100 yards, and only shoots around an inch or a little over with factory hunting rounds. I even clicked off a 6-shot 3/4" group of 150 grain Remington Core-Lokt ammo that I picked up for like 11 bucks. You can see the targets that I shot over this past summer developing loads:

Here are two targets that I shot with FGMM; the one on the top was 168 grain rounds -- those blew three primers w/in the five rounds, the fourth one jammed the gun which made me stop shooting to clear the jam -- the bottom one was 175 grainers. I haven't fired any more of those yet, but that is a five round group measuring .331 inches CTC. Could be a fluke, but you never know.

BTW, I recommend not buying the "heavy" Titan barrel if you don't want the weight. This gun weighs 14 lbs as you see it, unloaded. They have lighter contours for those who want a gun they can carry into the woods.

Re: Thinking of rebarrelling my DPMS 308...

I had a DPMS 308 that would not shoot. I had the barrel threaded for my suppressor and just would not shoot better then 1 1/2 MOA. I also have heard people say that there DPMS will shoot at least 1 MOA. I just ended up sending it to GAP to have the barrel replaced. Now it will shoot 1/2 to 3/4 MOA if I do my part. I am not sure if you will get the same results with a factory barrel unless you get luck.

The experience I have had with the DPMS is that the factory 24 inch bull is fair on average. We have had two on this one. The first would shoot right at 1 inch or so, and the replacement will go just under an inch. This is at 100 yards with FGMM 168 or 175. We had the 18 inch standard contour barrel on it when we got it and it would shoot less than .75 inch with the same rounds. I think our next step is to try the new Krieger barrel with 1/11.25 5R. I'm thinking this will be a significant improvement. Plus the 24 is a big heavy pig that's not putting out for it's weight. By the way I still have the 18 inch barrel with it's parts if you want it, round count is probably 75 or 80.
