- Vehicle maintenance and improvements including engine swaps, transmission rebuilding, axle regearing, etc.
- Cattle and other livestock raising
- Gardens measured in acres.
- Pro sports, sure, but they know I give zero fucks about it.

The problem is that outside of high school/college/early 20’s it becomes quite difficult to have these adventures with new fellows. Women, who become friendly via talking, do not have this limit.
My wife can go on a girl’s weekend four or five times a year, in which five chicks just sit in a damn cabin, talk, eat gourmet food (one is a chef), and drink red wine.
I say WTF???
I’m experiencing this isolation as I age. Some of my old friends are gone (moved) but many are so fixated by family life that the very thought a week-long hunting or ski trip with just us guys is alien to them. Like I asked them to dye their hair orange or something.
They are hyper-scheduled out to 2040 and slaves to their wife, aka “the boss”.
That last bit is important. I feel that a bit too. Unfortunate, it is.
Does anyone else feel this way? Is this just a Minnesotan thing? Or a white-collar thing? Or a Minnesotan white-collar thing? Or a Minnesotan white-collar guy married to a Minnesotan white-collar woman thing?
I hear echos of groups of guys who retreat to deer camp or the ice fishing shacks for a week-plus, and not just once a year. I just don’t run in those circles, unfortunately, and in Minnesota at least, making a new friend is a decade-long endeavor (at least).

My wife and I have given each other room to do our thing since we met 38 years ago.
That's probably why I never made friends with any of the other dads in my daughter's high school which is 15 miles south of where I live and definitely urban.

Midlife increases in suicides and drug poisonings have been previously noted. However, that these upward trends were persistent and large enough to drive up all-cause midlife mortality has, to our knowledge, been overlooked. If the white mortality rate for ages 45−54 had held at their 1998 value, 96,000 deaths would have been avoided from 1999–2013, 7,000 in 2013 alone. If it had continued to decline at its previous (1979‒1998) rate, half a million deaths would have been avoided in the period 1999‒2013, comparable to lives lost in the US AIDS epidemic through mid-2015. Concurrent declines in self-reported health, mental health, and ability to work, increased reports of pain, and deteriorating measures of liver function all point to increasing midlife distress.Abstract
This paper documents a marked increase in the all-cause mortality of middle-aged white non-Hispanic men and women in the United States between 1999 and 2013. This change reversed decades of progress in mortality and was unique to the United States; no other rich country saw a similar turnaround. The midlife mortality reversal was confined to white non-Hispanics; black non-Hispanics and Hispanics at midlife, and those aged 65 and above in every racial and ethnic group, continued to see mortality rates fall. This increase for whites was largely accounted for by increasing death rates from drug and alcohol poisonings, suicide, and chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis. Although all education groups saw increases in mortality from suicide and poisonings, and an overall increase in external cause mortality, those with less education saw the most marked increases. Rising midlife mortality rates of white non-Hispanics were paralleled by increases in midlife morbidity. Self-reported declines in health, mental health, and ability to conduct activities of daily living, and increases in chronic pain and inability to work, as well as clinically measured deteriorations in liver function, all point to growing distress in this population. Around my friends/relations (including my brother), that’s like asking for the moon or something. Brother’s wife locks him down quite a bit, but he also would rather slavishly go to his son’s YEAR-ROUND soccer games, which happen out of state too.
I don’t get it. I used to do stuff with these guys and we had fun. We talk on the phone every 2-4 weeks at length. But their schedules are chock full of family stuff, which is very Minnesotan.

I have American Legion meetings, Tuesday night horseshoes, Thursday trap team, public works meetings, and Friday Bible study. Every week or monthly this is all scheduled. I hunt and fish with my family and friends whenever I am able. I probably have six friends I see regularly, and a couple dozen I see infrequently.
I live in a community, and I'm an active part of that commuinity in as much as I donate some of my valuable time to keeping the lights on, making sure the storm water goes where it should, and keeping the streets free of pot holes. That's what an actual "community" is, and you can't avoid living in one unless you're a hermit. What these leftist morons call "community" is nothing of the sort. What they mean is identity group that tells them who they are and what they should think. They pack up because they are the weakest humans among us, and they seek a strict social order because they have no personality. These are incredibly weak people who can't function without being in a clique/gang. No Virginia, I am not part of an identity group ("community") where my name isn't on a roster for some kind of activity or service (and that's the extent of it). No group of people informs me of who I am, because there's no one else like me. I'm a unique in all the world individual, and I know who I am. The kind of person who needs to be part of an identity group to have meaning and value isn't worth knowing. Any crisis of masculinity is because of how many worthless, empty males seek an identity group to give their wastrel lives meaning.

The men I grew up around worked. And did so without complaining. They were all quite masculine, which is an inner thing. The hard jobs they had are not what made them masculine. And I am not talking about fear. You can have fear and still be a man. What makes you a man is how you respond to fear and overcome the situation.
And, as far as I can see, popular culture aside, woman find more attractive a masculine man. The kind of guy who does not "share his feelings." Women don't really want to hear about your feelings. They want you to listen to them about their feelings. Which you can do. Otherwise, we keep quiet about that.
Women need a man who is strong in his character and work ethic. In order for the species to continue, someone has to give birth and someone has to provide for the comfort, feeding, and care of mother and child. Not chauvinistic or sexist. Just the actual requirements of biology.
