North West of Canberra, mate. Not remote enough to be too isolated, but my nearest neighbour is 3km as the crow flies, so it's just right.

We're comparatively lucky with the ferals here, no dogs.

The rabbits were a serious problem, I was dropping over 600 a year before we introduced the Calicivirus 2yrs back, I've shot less than 100 since.
Foxes are about but I get more cats.

I was up between Katherine and Kununurra in the 90s and the bloody cats were pretty big up there too.

I never did find out the details, but about 16 or 17 years ago when I was living on the other side of the place, about 10km from here, we had a Chinook put down with what I assume was a mechanical issue on next door's front paddock. Nothing dramatic, looked like a nornal landing, but they had to wait for the fitters before they left.

We used to get pairs of fast movers over at low level occasionally too, but I haven't seen them for quite a while.

I don't know the situation in the US, but here in Oz we have a serious problem with cats, both feral and "domesticated".

I have a very simple rule of thumb here on this sheep property: if it hasn't got an ear tag and it's not native, it won't survive discovery here.

So far, the biggest cat I've given the good news was 8.75kg, plus whatever it's head might have weighed. That's big enough to take down a lamb, let alone a bird.

I am a long way from the nearest town so the chances of someone's pet wandering in are remote, but I'm not about to risk letting even one feral get away by checking either.

I had a large squirrel try that once with one of my dogs when the dog grabbed him out of a low tree. Didn't end well for the squirrel, the dog just acted like Bruce Lee when the enemy would cut him at the beginning of a fight. My dog just enjoyed playing chew toy with the squirrel hanging off the end of it's nose till it stopped squeaking. Young squirrels usually are just instant squeak toys if they don't get up a tree in a hurry (which all the smart ones are very good at doing).

Squirrels look cute from a distance but I've had enough damage done to my house by them and their rat buddies who follow in their trails to have a very dim view of any around my property.

Rabbits are fine around here as they don't eat everything & my dogs have an understanding with them... the rabbits agree to do a half hearted job of running away and the dogs agree to do a half hearted job of chasing them.

It's a bit of a balancing act, but cats roaming around do play an important part, along with other predators in keeping the rodent population at bay.
Which as folks in the dark ages found out, can be an important issue.

Then dogs, humans and other predators keep the cat population in check.

Animals can get smart however. I find that on regular occasions smaller rabbits & smaller birds will like to hide out under the window and along the bushes right near the bedroom window where my dogs like to keep watch, I think it's something to do with them feeling safer from cats sneaking up on them.

While cats are a problem for the smaller birds, Their biggest enemy is other birds, the huge black ones and then the hawks.
