...and livestock owners. About a week ago hide member blackrifleops and I revieved a call from one of our local rancher buddies that said he had a WHOLE BUNCH of coyotes coming into his calving pasture and they actually killed two of his calves, one which the ranch hand witnessed getting chewed on as it was being born, probably dead before it hit the ground. Needless to say Blackrifleops and I were happy to help the old fella out.

It was still dark when we grabbed the Foxpro and set out for the prairie. We got blanked on our first set of the day, luckily for us things would take off from there. On the second set of the morning we set up on a creek about 1 1/2 miles north of the ranchers house and while we were set out to put the hurt on some dogs, a bobcat came sneaking out of the buck brush to investigate the sound of our calls. I let the foxpro run for a few more minutes hoping the cat would come in for a close shot, when that didn't happen I whispered to BROps to send one her way and he stoned her at 120 yds. Over the course of the day we ended up seeing 25+ coyotes within about 3 miles of the ranchers house including packs of 3,4,5 and 6. We ended up killing 5, 3 of them we got within 50 yds, 1 at 30 and I took my longest kill of the year on a circling female at 320. While this isn't our best day as far as numbers, it's hard to think we've had a better day when you throw a cat in the mix with 5 dogs. On our way back to town we called the rancher and gave him a rundown of the day. He was happy to hear that we killed 5 and we assured him that we would be back to even the score with the ones that got away. Thanks fellas enjoy!

Nice kills, that's a good day. As soon as I figure out how this posting picture thing works I'll throw up a couple of mine. I know what caller you were using, but what call?

For cats I'll use something a little more quiet and high pitched like prairie dog distress, hairy woodpecker and the rabbit sounds I just mentioned. Alot of the time I'll use several different sounds on the same set as I've noticed over the years that some animals will come in to certain sounds and pay no attention to others. Almost forgot to mention coyote pup whines, killed alot of dogs with that sound.

My Savage is model 10, truck gun! She flops around in the back of my truck all day and still shoots and is cheap enough I just take the rattle can to it whenever I need a new look! Had a blast!

Great work! Calf killing coyotes are bad news, especially with current beef prices.

Good luck on your return trip(s), I hope you get all of them!

Re: This one's for all you predator hunters, ranchers

We have a few, but not many where I'm at. We try to keep them thinned out so that we don't loose any calves. They start to get pretty thick as you head towards the valley and the oil patch.

Stack 'em high and often!
