I saw this volcano when I was there in 2019... it was dormant but the guide said that It is one that has erupted a lot.

It’s only about 12 miles from Keflavik...

And right in the middle of the two largest Populated areas on Iceland.

Yeah, but how is this gonna affect the "Eurovision Song Contest" and will "Fire Saga" still be able to compete? They're from Keflavik or Husavik?

Said it's gonna be weak and just a lava flow type, not the explosive stuff.

That one in the 90's was the amazing one, it wiped out most of their infrastructure, the video is AMAZING. Fast moving lahars as far as the eye can see.

For you in WA, last two times Rainier blew (~11,000 and 5800 years respectively IIRC) one paved the way to Tacoma and created Commencement Bay (90m of old grow forest under those cranes) and that valley through Kent 167 runs through? Reason the drumlins to the left and right are smaller on that side vs. the other is because that valley is filled up with another 90m of rock and old growth forest --it emptied into Union Bay in Seattle. Mt. Rainier used to be a few thousand feet higher than it is today; the top of it is actually a crater filled with ice caverns. You can see vents smoking all over it up close.

Imagine seeing that today, an entire section of the NW I5 corridor just erased, and then buried.

OR the New Madrid fault in TN, people still talk about the Mississippi "flowing backwards" and Mud Island USED to be downtown.

Now the idea of that NW corridor of I5 vanishing has merit. Let's do that instead.

In fact, you could vanish the WHOLE of the I5 corridor and humankind would be better off.
Seattle, Portland, Eugene, Sacramento, LA.... you feel me.

Iceland will be cool for tourists. Yellowstone will be globe-changing.

US agriculture stopped in its tracks for... a generation? My guess 4 billion dead. Not from eruption, but from the after effects over decades. Starvation, disease... colder temperatures. Possible glacier/ice age. No travel. Industrial capacity and energy just wiped out for years. Who is capable of living in the 17th century right now? A few hardy folks. They will be the new stock.

Yellowstone won’t wipe out human kind but sure as shit will reset anything and everything. And it’s coming.... the park is not in dormant mode. In geologic time, all that stuff in there is signs of a very active hotspot

Yellowstone is the global time bomb.

Vesuvius would make a nice warning shot, too. It’s due for a big one. Good luck even thinking about evacuating Naples even with days warnings. And the big one there is not even Vesuvius, the big one is the hidden one under Naples Bay. And a second on-land caldera is now a toney residential area. Right inside the caldera!!!

We have had a very safe world for the last 500’years. Odds are not good for the next few hundred. And dependence on technology and others to do the hard work makes a disaster global, no matter how local it might seem.

And I read somewhere that particular volcano puts out more ozone, CO2, or whatever bad shit the climate people hate, in a year than all the fossil fuels the continent of North America does in a year.

Obviously we need to pay more taxes to make that volcano stop the emissions.

Mount Pinotubo in the late 1980's or early 1990's was putting out more sulfur dioxide per hour than human kind has created in its entire evolutionary existence. But the eco crazies have an explanation for that... "The planet is 'used' to that. Man adds extra and the planet can't handle that. How Dare you!"

If you have not watched this guy's lecture series, you are missing out. He does these free public lectures on geology (as well as field trips, etc) around the PNW. An amazingly talented educator, great speaker and fun to listen to!

I like to tell the green idiots this as well. Especially the "per hour" part. I just got back from the grocery store where the usual protesters (aka commies) were espousing that "green", "war is bad (not that I think it's good, but they continue to blame DJT)", "Boycott Israel", "Solar Power" "Electric Cars" - all whilst they are driving TOYOTA/LEXUS SUV's...which as I can personally attest to get SHITTY gas mileage (13-14mpg in town).

Agree. For those too lazy to watch the above link, just watch from 37:41 on. Earthquakes predict coming volcanoes - since 2009 the number of earthquakes increased 4x; to the point of 12 - 50 earthquakes a day up to 3.9. The second indicator is increased molten rock raising the above ground - which is also happening right now faster than ever before. Those hot springs are churning out sulfuric & hydrochloric acid. The above program stated when it goes even NY while be under over 10ft of ash...

Last time I went to Stanford for a visit I sat on the plane next to a geological engineer who already had a PhD from MIT and was completing another from Stanford - he said the next big natural disaster in the US everyone is his camp was expecting - an I know you guys will appreciate this...is the fault will cause giant earthquakes in the Seattle-Portland zone. Cheers..

Italy is already offering the equivalent of $46,000 for each citizen in the red zone to move out (there are 800,000 residents, but 3M tourists visit per year too - the tourists don't get the bonus for leaving tho) The above link said it would take t least 2 weeks to evacuate currently - but it is unlikely there will be more than 72 hours notice. And temperatures reaching 932 F??? That's sick.

No, that was in Central iceland and was a higher-pressure volcano with a powerful ash ejecta (and by ash, they mean Powdered rock and fine silica.)

This one is by the coast and has a history of long lava flows. If you look at the images and go to Google Earth, you can see the parts of the ground scorped out by the lava with each eruption. But it tends to be more like Hawaii eruptions. Lots of lava, some gasses and not a powerful explosion.

That is until it explodes. But from some of the documentary/lectures I've played on YouTube, the scientists are pretty good at telling what kind of volcano it's going to be by sampling gas in the lava and at the surface. The 'bad' ones are the ones that have a lot of pressure and when they go, they are like a champagne cork. That's vesuvius, Krakatoa, etc.

Yellowstone erupts about once every 650,000 years. Guess What? The last eruption was....650,000 years ago.

I visited Gullfoss years ago.

I heard in the news today that the main road between the Airport (Keflavik) and Reykjavik is shutdown because of lava flows.

Plus there was a 7+ earthquake in Japan.
