I might have a deal on a 20" 7mm-08 barrel with a 1:9 twist. I was curious how well that would work, will it shoot the 162 Amax's well? Is a 7mm-08 like a 308 where barrel length doesn't seem to affect velocity that much?

Re: Thoughts on a 7mm-08 with 20" Barrel

We were getting 2720fps with a 140 Berger out of a 9 twist 15" 7-08 so you should be in the 2800's pretty easy with a 140. We never tried the heavier bullets, didn't need them to get to 1000 yards easily. Accuracy shouldn't be a problem, those short barrels will really shoot.

A 9 twist should stabilize the 162 Amax just fine. 20" barrel seems a little short to me but I don't have any personal experience with a 7mm-08.

1:8 twist 18 1/2" barrel here. I primarily shoot the 162's and would think I could stabilize the 180's just fine. I don't have any chrono numbers yet but it sure shoots good at short range.

I shot my 7-08 with a 1-9 twist with 162's just fine. If you run optimal twist rate on software it says they won't fly, but they shoot 162's just fine in the 2700 fps or higher range. I have some groups in the .2 range.

Try H4350.

Can't remember my load right now..........I will have to get out to the loading room and take a look at my notes.

For years Hodgdon listed H4350’s max at 48.0C (compressed) grains with the 162 at 2714fps. I first noticed the change this fall on their web data and now it’s made its way into the printed magazine they publish. The new max is 45.0 grains at 2622fps. OAL remains the same but the pressure listed now is higher for 45g vs the old 48g. No reason was given that I could find.

Follow safe load work up and find your own max.

Re: Thoughts on a 7mm-08 with 20" Barrel

Thanks I will try H4350 out, anyone chronied any RL-17 with the 162 amax.I might have to pick some of that up to try also. Hornady lists 2700 fps with 46 grains, probably cant stuff too much over 46 gr than that though without running into compression issues/case capacity.

Re: Thoughts on a 7mm-08 with 20" Barrel

My best 7mm08 load is 41.1grs. of RL-15 topped with a 140gr. VLD. I have no idea what the true velocity is but it has produced several 1/2 MOA groups at 200 yds. This is with a 1 in 9 twist 22 inch barrel.

Same here.

Re: Thoughts on a 7mm-08 with 20" Barrel

I have a 26" barrel but with 47.2G of H4350 loaded at 2.905" OAL I run the amax at 2780.

I run the BTHP with the same powder charge at 2.870" OAL and get the same velocity.

Chopping down six inches I would guess you at 2625-2650 with that load. I have a 1 in 8 twist by the way and if you're running a 20" I'd highly recommend you run the tighter twist.

Good luck,
Merritt
