Thoughts on Magpul PRS Lite?

Yep, no extension available. I like mine so far, haven't had a chance to shoot yet, but I ordered directly from Magpul and ordered a thicker butt piece also. Of course it didn't work, and there was no direction when ordering as to "this won't fit", "not for PRS lite" after I got it and it was obviously only for the regular PRS I asked the guy "seems easier to just warn that you ordered a part that won't fit the stock you just bought? Yeah he said!! Covid I guess
He said they probably won't make an extended pad because of "weight".........
yada yada a few grams is a problem?? Either way it's a nice choice between the original and the "light"
They must waste a tremendous amount refunding for something so easy to fix.

I picked up a grind to fit recoil pad from kick eez. I got it pretty close to the correct size and I really like the feel of it.

I don't have a belt sander but I have a bench grinder. Only took a couple of minutes to get them to the right size.

I guess it depends on how good you want it to look. I'm ok with it not being perfect so this is what I did. I'm really happy with the way it feels. Obviously I had to drill a new top hole and grind it to fit

sure, I just like the factory look. my rifle is a heavy beast anyway but the limbsaver is an option.

I got two black ones in for my 14.5 SR25 and my 16 SR25 as I hate the collapsible on thee rifles. But the damn adapter needs mod due to the QD attachment plate under the castle nut (or remove it). Solid stock, now got to make it fit.

took a few pics in case it helps anyone here. One thing to note for KAC owners, sorry if its been covered already. Due to the KAC hardware thickness if you go with the PRS Lite it will leave a gap and expose threads on the buffer tube. The pic (SR15) with no gap is taking the KAC hardware off and throwing on a base plate and mil-spec castle nut.

I was thinking of cutting the lip off the lite extension to accomodate the KAC QD mount versus removing the KAC QD and replace it with a new plate and new milspec castle nut ... any reason this wouldnt work?

Hey guys, I have read through the 7 pages of this thread. I’m getting ready to purchase the PRS Lite but before I do I want to confirm that this will fit the a5 buffer tube? I have a solgw a5 buffer tube. I know it doesn’t fit rifle buffer tubes. Thanks for the help!

It's the BCM A5 receiver extension. I didn't have any issues with the stock going on, it's good to go.

Yeah I've been asking Magpul to sell some some PRS lite pads for my Gen 3 PRS's for months now, most of the time they won't even respond. I'm still running mostly Gen 2's because they have a very thin rubber pad makes it about 1/2" shorter than the Gen 3.

LOP of the PRS Gen 3 is ridiculously long on many chassis, and also large frame AR's, it's tolerable on small frame AR's.

I thought about just selling my PRS Gen 2/3 and replacing with the lite version since I pretty much leave them alone once set, but I'd also have to swap everything over to carbine extensions/buffers etc. since the lite won't run on rifle length extensions.

Anybody have the width measurement on both the lite and the GEN 3 where it would ride a bench rest bag? Looking at protektor rear bag and they have different gaps between the two ears

I got one of these prs lites. I have an m&p lower on my ar15. It has a normal a2 rifle buffer tube.

I should be able to swap into a mil spec tube kit but wanted to know if I’d need a specific QD adapter.

So, I just bought a spikes mil/carbine buffer kit.

Hope it works. At this point I’ve spent more than I really wanted to

A QD adapter for the stock itself or are you talking about the end plate? The end plate should be a standard receiver end plate for the best installation. For one of the rear QD points, I used a Magpul Type 1 sling mount kit.

Yeah the spike buffer kit I got has a std QD for endplate. It just seems like the stock. Buts to the endplate and may move/turn. I suppose it’s held in place by the buffer tubes bottom spine.

Also yeah I was wondering how to run a sling. So thanks

Has anyone had an issue with this stock sliding back on the buffer tube? I have the bolt tight but I was cleaning the gun today and the stock kept sliding back on the buffer tube.

I am using an aero enhanced buffer tube, not sure if that would make a difference.

How much is it sliding? I could get mine to move on a A5 tube a little bit if I forced it to but I'm talking like barely perceptible movement, not enough to be an issue while shooting.

Maybe not an inch like 1/4

I was thinking my buffer tube wasnt screwed in enough but if i screw it in any more the detent pin wont be able to slide through the slot on the enhanced buffer tube.

Yeah that's excessive. My first step would be to disassemble the stock and inspect it for any broken pieces, then reassemble it. I found it helped to push the stock forward into the castle nut and hold it there with my hip while I tightened the mounting screw to spec (20 in/lbs IIRC). If that didn't work, I'd switch out the receiver extension for a traditional mil-spec unit and see if it was indeed something with the enhanced buffer tube.

Yeah, the issue is the buffer tube is not in far enough for the bushing and screw to rest agains the part that I circled. So i can pull the stock back and then it hits that part.

I have a silent capture spring, so I don't really need the detent in there, Im going to try and remove the detent and screw the buffer tube in more.

You can see in the second pic i lined up the angled part of the buffer tube to just touch the hole where the bushing and screw go, if I look at the stock I can see it is pushed back the same amount, so that tells me I need to push the buffer tube in further into the rifle.

I guess a heads up for anyone using an enhanced buffer tube.

You might start running into clearance issues with the buffer tube running into your upper receiver if you have to screw it in that much. I'd swap in a regular mil-spec buffer tube and save the enhanced one for another build.

I thought that too, I checked and I have at least the amount of room that the stock kicks back. Ill at least give it a try without having to buy another tube. Don't care about the cost, I just want to shoot the damn thing. Its been a 3 month build waiting for the barrel.

I got ahold of one of these and I’m really liking it, the only downfall is no tool less adjustment but the weight savings is worth it, if you want an adjustable set it and forget it then you will like this stock.

It is exactly 14” from the TriggerTech Diamond with Flat shoe to the end of the pad, basically eliminating about half an inch.

I’d say it’s a perfect fit. It seems to be the exact same profile. The back edges do seem to have a slightly larger radius which makes it look not as flush as the original, but to me that’s boarderline nitpicking.

The only issue I had with installation was the original screws are too long.

One other important note, the Lite pad is not “squishy“ at all, in fact I’d say it’s more plastic than rubber. But for my application, an 11 lb, 20” heavy barrel, 5.56 recoil isn’t an issue...

Yes, I just got mine, and it slides back about 3/16” no matter how tight the screw is dogged down. It takes a bit of effort to slide it back, but it’s definitely not confidence inspiring. There is a gap between the lock screw and the adjustment track (?) on the receiver extension which defines the amount of potential slop in the system. I’m thinking about shimming it, or sending it back to Magpul.

I do have a couple of other receiver extensions kicking about. Maybe I’ll try it on them and switch things around for the best fit.

I’m generally a fan of Magpul products, but this stock is a let down.

I’m going to amend what I said above. I do have a couple of other carbine receiver extensions kicking about, so I tried the PRS lite on them. The top is an Anderson Mil Spec RE. The bottom is an Aero Mil Spec RE. Note that the slope on the adjustment track differs between the two. As was noted above, the Aero RE has a steeper slope which doesn’t interface well with the magpul PRS lite stock. Also of note is the thickness of the receiver end plate mated to the Anderson RE. This also impacts how the stock fits. Too thick and the locking hardware doesn’t fit. Too thin and you get a sloppy fit.

With the Mil spec Anderson RE and a Mil spec end plate, I was still getting more slop in the stock than I found acceptable. I was able to take up the extra slop by grinding in a recess for the buffer retainer into the RE, and threading the RE one extra turn into the receiver. While I haven’t shot the rifle yet, there is enough travel in the bcg that it still clears the bolt stop, so I don’t expect any function issues to arise from my modest RE modification.

So, the stock fits and I’m not sending it back. It doesn’t work well with an Aero receiver extension. You may need to play around with bit and bobs to get it the fit you want. The stock is not plug-and-play in my experience. That said, it is lighter than the PRS stock. And, while the adjustments are not tool-less, it maintains much of the adjustability of the heavier and more expensive big brother.

All in all, my initial impressions are satisfactory.

Right! It is not a recoil pad…just hard plastic. If anybody finds a real recoil pad that fits, I’ll buy one.

I had to sand down flat ( took about 3 minutes, sheet of 100grit and sheet of 180grit ) the angle on the bottom of the hard plastic, and the fit is pretty danged good IMHO.

The screw holes matched, and I used the OEM screws.

The top is slightly to high, but the rest of the profile matches good enough for me. As seen it the photos, the various angles match up pretty good.

I just quickly slapped it on... so if the alignment isn't perfect, I am comfortable I could adjust it side to side.

However, the top part that is high will take some messing with to get it flush'ish. As it is.. I could easily use it.

FWIW... they make quite a few cheek pads for various Precision rifle stocks... I have no affiliation with them, but I was surprised the about the variety of cheek rests offered.

And on a side note... the PRS Lite pad was out of stock, I e-mailed and asked when it would be available... and Matt Stoner, promptly responded and said more were just made. Great CS !

If you prefer a softer cheek rest... it is worth it to look at the various "models" offered. To many for my lazy ass to list.

The gen 1 PRS was the shortest of the bunch but still longer than that. A Luth-AR MBA3 series is going to be what you'd want to look at for a shorter LOP with similar features.

I plan shortening the one I have on the way so would appreciate seeing how you did it and if you have anything you would do different.

I'll do my best to describe how I went about shortening the length of pull. Not difficult, just a little tedious and worth the effort for me. Yes, the work does look a little crude, but when complete an reassembled, none of the cuts can be seen.

First step is to completely disassemble the stock. In the next 2 pics you can see an overall length measurement to show for reference where the stock started and where it ended up.

and the next pic you can see where I have marked the sliding section to be cut to get 1/2" - 5/8" reduction in LOP. Notice where I marked it with a sharpie....

More to show where I cut the sliding piece.....if you look closely you can see where I marked with a sharpie.

View after cutting the serrated part to length to allow it to move further inside the stock body....

Next pics show areas on the outer stock halves that need to be removed to allow the sliding part to move further back...
