Hey guys. I have a 5/8-24 brake sitting around that works with my AAC 762-SD. My question is this: I've had a couple people warn me about thread adapters and suppressors. I purchased a 1/2-28 to 5/8-24 adapter from Precision Armament. The description says they are perfectly concentric and such. Are the warnings against the thread adapters warranted? Has anyone had issues?

I ran a metric to 1/2x28 adaptor from TROS on a T3 Tactical in 223. Had no issue at all using a direct thread Gemtech.
Hmmm ok. I mean I have shot the QD on mount on my Surgeon with no issue so assuming everything looks ok... I should be ok!
I believe the machinist's term is called "tolerance stacking"; and it's not known as a good thing. However, lots of folks do it with no ill results as long as everything is concentric. I've done it myself to run a Mac can on a 16" Colt 9 - PRETTY FUNNY LOOKING.

The barrel is already threaded at 1/2-28 (obviously). Average cost to rethread a barrel around here - ~$100, might as well get it timed while I'm at it, throw in another $20. Well at that point i'm $120 ish in and the 1/2-28 brake is $135. Seeing as an adapter is $25 I couldn't justify the extra 100$ for another brake or having work done to the barrel that I really don't want to cut back.
Ok, just offering to help here. Tell ya what, give AAC a call and ask them what they think. Then call 3 other suppressor mfg's and ask what they think. The cost of the job done correctly will offset a future suppressor repair and a 25 dollar adapter. Your choice, obviously.

Thanks Dave. I appreciate the input.
Talked to AAC and they suggested not to even try it, also that it would void the warranty. The said "It would not work..." reason behind this was "adding up tolerances will lead to baffle strikes" meaning the .0001 tolerances on the thread pitch adapter (from the description of the item) and the .00___ tolerance on the WOA barrel's threads would lead to .00__? of being non concentric. Thus leading to baffle strikes.
So that leads to my next question - since there is .00__ of tolerance in there, would it be ok to use a .30 cal can? Would the bullet diameter be small enough to allow for those 'non concentric tolerances'?

It's the whole potential thread loosening thing that would drive me nuts. If you worry about one set of threads, imagine what two sets would do....You'd be reaching to tighten the can/threads after every few shots; at least i would. I did that Colt 9 \ Mac can thing back when i didn't know better.

I assumed you meant a .223 through a .30 can?
Also, after the 3,546,734th time you've reached to tighten the threads and think that it's never going to loosen, you'll forget about it and discover the ding in your $1000.00 can that night when you are cleaning your guns.

I was already pretty skeptical at the beginning, then the first couple responses came in and I was pretty pumped thinking I wouldn't have any issues. After speaking with AAC, I likely not even mess with it. Kinda sucks having a can and not being able to use it very often lol. Such is life - poor planning. Hell it was my first can and its been fun. Now I know better. Appreciate it guys.

That's quite true. I've thought about doing something similar but the college budget is rough for now.

Glad you got this advice. I appreciate your frugality but as someone who has dealt with the hassle of an end cap strike you should do everything in your power to minimize Murphy entering your system....best $130 you can spend IMHO
A $25 adaptor I would not trust. IIRC, the TROS was three times that.

The price of the adapter wasn't really what got me and I'm usually not the person to take the cheap way out. The adapters description and reviews were what sold me on it. I wish I could have used the 1/2-28 brake I had on my 13.7" barrel but it got a little to messed up upon removing the pin and all that stuff. Such is life. Now to just go see what the hell this rifle will do without a can
