I have a Remington mil spec 5R 24" barrel with a badger break installed by GA Precision, shoots awesome, I just got a thread on can at a good price and was thinking about running it on my 308. My question is that if I put this can on my rifle its going to be really long and not fit in my bag, I see tons of rifles with thread protectors for this reason I presume. Will taking the can on and off for travel etc over a long period of time wear out my threads??

I have been told taking breaks off and on a lot can cause timing to change over time, and
I would prefer to just leave it on all the time but bc of length I really cant. i wanted to see what everyone else does, I really don't want to buy another can even though a QD could solve this problem.

With a thread on can you're only going to get it hand tight, so there will be very little stress on the threads and I don't see how you could ever wear them out. Dab a little anti-seize on every once in a while if you're worried about it.

Rufields, sorry if I came across as a smart ass didn't mean it don't worry, screw any thing on/off by hand and absolutely no worries. Do not trade direct thread for a quick detach!

No worries, I didn't take it that way, I'm so glad that I am going to be able to do this, I'm getting addicted to the suppressed life, but have been Leary of touching my barrel bc it's been shooting so awesome,

The one time I was told something similar was from a gunsmith who has a solid reputation locally. From what I understood, if the threads are too fine of a pitch you would run the possibility of throwing the timing off if you are really torquing down. But this was for a brake that had a 28TPI pitch.

Not sure it would be a problem with 24TPI which I believe is on your rifle.

The regular removal of a suppressor is actually beneficial as it prevents premature corrosion of the crown and in time the threads. Because the baffles heat and cool as they do their job of suppressing the muzzle blast they also, due to convection, draw in cool air, this in turn causes condensation to form - thereby coating the internals with moisture- now this is not normally an issue in dry arid climatic conditions but in humid or damp environments it can speed up corrosion around the crown.

I always remove my cans and allow them to air prior to storage off the muzzle. As previously stated as long as your fitting and removing by hand and not over torquing you will be good as far as thread wear goes.
