Three gun help

Im looking to try 3 gun. Any one out there can help me deside what type of AR to build or buy. Im looking for a 16 or 18 inche barrel 1to 7 or 1 to 8 twist then Trigger selection. Single or double action way to much thought involved for a first timer. I'm a clay shooter and want to try this out. so any one out there with advise please lend a hand.

If you have the money get a JP rifle. If not I say 16” 1/8 Wylde. For buffer look at JP and for trigger look at JP. I like the Aero precision’s lower with the flared mag well. For muzzle brakes I like the PRI quite brake.

I would suggest borrowing an AR if possible. You don’t even know if you’ll continue shooting 3gun after your first match. I will say this, it doesn’t stop at the guns.

You will need to buy specific gear like shotgun shell caddies because loading from your pockets is painfully slow and frustrating. Some stages require you to have 30 shotgun shells on you plus having your shotgun fully loaded.

You said you’re a clay shooter, are you using a over/under, pump, or semi? How many shells can it hold?

Whatever you have will work to start but like I said, buying an AR is not the end of it. It may sound like I’m bashing 3gun, but I am not.

Just trying to save you a headache from buying a $2k JP rifle just to shoot one match or two and decide you don’t like it.

Ask to come out and shoot a match with a buddy that has more than a year or two of experience. Offer to pay for the ammo, gas and lunch. You will know far more after shooting a match whether it's for you or not. During the match ask to feel guys gear. It's odd but dudes love having other dudes compliment their rigs. You will understand in practice what trigger you like, what optic and reticle makes sense and why shoving shotgun shells 4 at a time into a tube is dumb and you should just shoot open.

If you just want to go out and buy an AR and say it's for 3 gun, here's 2 ready to go perfect for 3 gun options from a company that has some of the deepest roots in the game. Feel free to PM me if you have questions. Option 1 (my rifle, preferred for long range)/ Option 2 (Bay only setup less than 200 yds).

As others have said, go try a match out first and borrow gear if you need to before you dive head in and start hemorrhaging cash on everything that goes into these matches.

For the AR, I prefer rifles with a 14.5” barrel with a pinned/welded muzzle brake, but 16” barrel is fine too. 1-7 or 1-8 twist, either should be fine. I have rifles with both twist rates and can shoot anything from 50gr-77gr out of them accurately and reliably. I prefer single stage triggers for match AR’s (Geissele or Hiperfire). Here’s a couple AR’s I use for matches... FDE one is factory mostly (added a few things), and black one was built.

All you need is 100% reliable gear, targets are big and usually not that far so you don’t need the most accurate AR built on the planet. Speed is more important than tight groups so pick something light and not too long and that goes for shotguns too

I shoot 3 gun monthly and like to change it up a bit. Normally shoot a 16” 1-8 twist but have shot a 12.5 “ gun with a re dot and have no issues hitting 12” plates at 200 plus. To me it’s all fun.

What about optics both ARs have scopes for longer targets I'm looking at Eotech HHS II with the EXPS-2 and the G33 magnifier,, buddy's telling me to get sig Juliet 3 . any thoughts on optics

Low power scopes are greatly beneficial for 3 gun if your local matches are shooting past 100 yards. You can still get accurate hits past that with just a red dot, but you really have to know your holdovers because the single dot is all you have. The other Eotech reticles with more dots for holds just covers the target.

Either go just Eotech without magnifier or go with a 1-4, 1-6x. Not sure about your local club but my club splits red dots and magnified optics into two separate divisions.

For a rifle, any ar15 will get you into the game,

I equate the average ar15 to a Rem 700 with aics bottom metal for prs. It isn’t fancy or anywhere near what is best, but if you know how to run it you can have fun and learn

With that said, budget is important.

Fortex strike eagle 1-8 scope is good enough for most stages, but if you get a lot of wind or some longer ranges (350+) the sfp optic starts to be a negative

I use either a rock river 16” carbine or a Daniel defense 16” carbine, only gun upgrade is a geissle trigger

A full aero build with a low mass bcg, adjustable gas block, biggest legal muzzle break, a 18” Barrel, low mass buffer and all the fixings would make for a better gun, but like most sports it’s often not the gear that wins, it’s the shooter

I have used a stock glock, stock ar15, stock moss berg 930 shotgun to best folks with $7k of gear and guns

I’ve also lost quite badly to folks with better gear

just bring what you got to your first match or two, seriously. most everyone will let you fondle their kit, and even shoot them, so you can get a feel for what might work for you. if you want a new gun (and who doesn't), jp ctr-02 18" 1-8 wylde with a vortex razor hd2 1-6 jm reticle on top and you'll have zero regrets other than an empty wallet. especially if your club goes out past 200, make sure you know your drops in 50yd increments. a fair amount of people time out on the 500yd stages at my local club. i run a geissele 2 stage ssa-e in most of my ar's. nice having that lighter 2nd stage for the longer/smaller targets.

make sure you have a holster that will retain your handgun during vigorous action. having that come flying out while running with your rifle is a dq and will ruin your day. again just use what you got but crank it down so it stays in. later on you can get a holster with a hood, switch, whatever that has positive retention but when you hit the switch there is zero draw friction. regarding scope power, you do want it to go down to 1x as you'll usually have banks of close targets and at 2 or 3x it's easy to get lost, so you won't see many 2.5-10 or 3-9 etc scopes in 3 gun.

If you have 3 ARs already you dont need to build/buy anything. As few people already mentioned go to some matches and you will find out know what you need or want. As far as red dot or a scope, most people myself included eventually got both. Some matches I shoot open or tac (scope) and some limited (rds/irons). Most clubs I've seen have a similar format

I've been posting there for years and can tell you it's general knowledge 3 gun is dead...the main organization are gone or hanging on by a thread and all the big names have went to strictly handgun or they've left completely..

3 gun is resurgent in name only due to John wick...

It IS a dead sport that will never go past club level again for the most part

If you have a flat top upper, get a Vortex 1-6 or 1-8 strike eagle. I use that all the time over my Razer 2 1-6.
Everything else you have is fine, but since you asked, trigger, ALG, Trigger Tech and AR Gold are all very good. Barrel, Any good light, 1/8 in 16" My first build was a 18" but totally unnecessary. Muzzle brake. JP's are very good. BUffer system, JP is outstanding paired with an LW bolt and an adjustable gas block.

Best to get a few mag carriers, shotgun caddies (Taccom) and a good pistol holster and give it a try without huge expense.

Interesting. I prefer 2-gun anyway. I think handgun is more popular due to the simplicity of only managing one gun to play the game. Ammo is also cheaper too.

I go to 3gun comps monthly. It’s just fun with good people. I run a very light totally custom 18” barrel, but a 16” will do just fine in most all matches. I use the Strike eagle even though I could have put the NX8 on top. Again keep the weight low and get a long but light handguard. Also use a higher end compensator, not a flash hider. You should just run 55gr 5.56. So pick the right twist and yes go with a Wylde chamber. The pistol makes the biggest difference in times for most of us as long as you are running a good shotgun and AR. Most important... go to some 3gun outings with what you have before you buy anything.

I would echo the advice others have given above. Take one of the ARs you currently have and go shoot a match before dropping any money on upgrading one or on building a new gun.

If you like it and get hooked you'll probably find that at the most a brake and new trigger will allow you to get by for quite a while with one of the rifles you already own. Which is good, because you'll need to spend a fair amount to get a shotgun and shell caddies that will allow you to really enjoy the scattergun side of the sport.

3 gun is hardly dead. LOL. I shoot 2 or 3 matches a month and have noticed it changing a little. A lot guys just shoot the 2 gun division rifle and pistol. The PCC division is really taking off.

In Virginia it might be. I know there was a 2 Gun match at a club (pistol/shotgun) last year. My club shoots IDPA and Tactical Shotgun on different weekends. NBC killed 3 Gun Nation after Newtown. From there we are just a little late to the party but no one has a party anymore.

I'm still gearing up for it because there is nothing wrong with shooting but I don't think I'll shoot more than one real 3 Gun a year unless something within 100 miles changes.
