Shot a 50 Beowolf today and I liked the thump. Which caliber would you prefer if going to a large cartrige with heavy grain bullet. 50 Beowolf or the 458 socom? Pro's,cons for both????

Also, does anyone make a 44 mag AR? I would think that this would be a great choice for a 200 yard (Maybe more with practice and maybe optics) AR. The 44 Mag is a fantastic round with alot of options (Ammo, brass so easy to come by being the main one). I realize that the 458 socom trumps the 44 mag on so many levels though except for brass / ammo availability.
Just curious ....Thanks......SmokeRolls

Re: Thumping AR questions

Headspacing is easier and more reliable on the .458 socom since it has a shoulder, you have to watch trim lengths on the .50 beowulf and .450 bushmaster..

.44 mag is a no-go because the case is rimmed and you won't get that to feed worth a shit from a mag.

Re: Thumping AR questions

Tony Rumore of Tromix made a few .44 Magnum conversion kits a few years ago. I bought a couple of the conversions and set them up for customers. They were extremly accurate and the recoil wasn't bad at all. The downside was unreliable feeding that .44 rimmed cartridge. I made up some frankenmags using GI 20 rounders with a Desert Eagle mag stuffed inside that worked okay and tried lots of mods with factory mags and made up followers/spacers without much success. The rimmed case was the issue.

I have had a lot of experience with the Beowulf cartridge and not so much with the Socom. My nod would be towards the Beowulf as it is hard to beat the .500" diameter bullet.

Re: Thumping AR questions

Thanks for the advice on the 44 mag no-go due to rim and feeding. I have been researching articles on the 458 socom,50 Beowolf and the 450 bushmaster. I'm leaning towards the socom due to bullet choices and 600 grains at 1000fps would sound great with a suppresor (errrr I mean it wouldn't) Hahahahaha.
Whats the best reloading info on all three rounds or location to view the specs? Sierra manual has one of them but no go on all three together...............SmokeRolls
