Tikka 270win to magnum

Hello everyone. I was doing some research and the info is very limited on this. I’ve been think of doing a custom build off a tikka t3 in the near future. Currently its chambered in 270 win. I was thinking building a 28 nosler with it. What is everyone input on this?

30-06 and load it hot. You should be able to push 200+ grain pill at or over the 3000 fps mark with a decent barrel length...

Agree with Weiser above. If it's mostly deer, the .270 is ideal, keep it. If Elk, it's right there on the borderline and something bigger makes sense, but it doesn't have to be a magnum.

That's a good point.

And with the 30-06, you can have two different loads for those two different applications. One loaded heavier and hotter for elk and one loaded lighter for deer.

Maybe this is just me, and my honest opinion and not trying to start a pissing match, but advising someone else to load to way the hell over saami spec in a cartridge to a rifle you know nothing of is not a good move. (200grain in .30-06 good for about maybe 2600-2650fps)

I never said to go over pressure. There's actually some info here on the hide showing it's possible without running into pressure issues. I know the older rifles are probably not capable of pushing a 200 grain pill near 3000 fps but modern advancement have led to much stronger actions and more capable. I will find links and post them up. That's why I suggested clambering in 30-06 because while not many people consider it, this cartridge can be very versatile and very effective.

Hey, I am a .30-06 fan. I know what it can do. But 3000 fps, 200 gr. and say 24 inch barrel is in the 70k pressure range.

You are right, I was mostly going off my memory and my memory was off so please pardon my really bad memory lol. I looked for the thread and found it. Montanamarine is the guy I was thinking about who pushes heavy pills in a 3006 and has great results with it. The 3006 can give a 300WM a run for its money but this isn't based on personal experience because I don't have any with said cartridge. This is off of what I've learned from others members' experiences so don't take my word, take theirs.

This might be a stupid question but this is the correct place for it I guess. Is the 30-06 even a thing in the long range community anymore? I see .300 Win Mag, 6.5 CRD, .260, and .308 a lot but I don’t see anyone using a 30-06. I just figured with the use of the 30-06 in WW2 and it’s good BC...

And you can get a 6.5 creed to push a 147 eldm at 2950 like the 6.5 PRC. But that doesnt mean its smart/safe

First off, replacement bolts aren't a thing with a Tikka. If you truly want a 28 Nosler, sell the rifle you've got and get a 300wm or 7mag to rebarrel since it has the correct bolt face.

Second, as mentioned above, Tikka blows for something like a 28 Nosler that really benefits from LA AICS length mags. The best you can do with a Tikka is MDTs special mags that go to something like 3.56". I think someone else has come out with a Tikka bottom metal now that sort of works with AICS mags, but again, it's not ideal.

FWIW I have a Tikka 28 Nosler in an MDT chassis with their special Tikka mags. It shoots great and I still like Tikka for a hunting rifle, but if I was starting over, I'd go with something that works better with SAAMI LA length. I know 28 Nosler is designed to, but you end up with the ogive right at the case neck with any of the higher BC bullets. If I was building a longer range hunting rig today, I'd probably go with a 6.5 PRC.

You should read up on @EDMJustin test he did. With a 26" barrel and a 147eld-m using reloader26 I think he managed over 2900FPS with relatively low ES & SD. He claimed to have no pressure signs also. Of course that's probably still a hot load regardless of having no signs of pressure. I'm not saying everybody should go try this right now though. If the OP decides to chase whatever load or speed, he should do so by always starting off with safe charges and safely working up.

My recommendations or posts are just my opinion. He asked what to chamber in and I recommended 3006 hot rodded. Again, this is assuming he will work up by starting with safe charges.

Nothing wrong with .270 for deer and elk. It was once considered about the best for that game. Now folks look down on the .270 Win and then recommend a .260 or 6.5 CM?
Just fads. They are all fine, as are most of the others.
I live in an area that has deer that can weigh 250-375 pounds in the early fall. I started hunting them in 1968. I have shot and guided to several hundred large bucks. Countless does. I started with a 6mm Rem, went to a .358 Win. Tried dozens of calibers. .338, 375 H&H etc. I used a .270 Win for years. Also 7mm magnums of various sorts.
Long to short is now I use a .223 and all my hunters use that rifle as well.
Shot quite a few elk with 7mm magnums and a few with the .270. No difference.

It's kind of apples to oranges but I had RW Snyder turn an old 270 Rem721 into a 300wm.

IMO, Tikkas are limited in regard to even "regular" long-action rounds (.270 Win, 30-06, etc...), making them well-suited to the WSM (and similar) cartridges. I am in the process of putting together a Tikka in 270 WSM that began life as a 30-06. I had the bolt face opened up by a local smith, and JB Welded a brass shim (cut from a scrap 338 LM case) under the extractor to space it out (from the firing pin hole) far enough to grab the .535" diameter case rim of the WSM cartridge. Easy peasy. It's a pretty "bubba" solution, but it's in a pretty low stress location, and even if it fails, it's not going to create a safety hazard.

Unfortunately, that's as far as I have gotten with the project due to a lack of funds, so it'll be awhile before I get 'er done.
