Tikka Shouldered Prefit Barrel vs Tikka Prefit Barrel - Barrel Nut

Not sure which type of barrel is the factory installed on Tikka T3X Tac A1.

I am planning to get a spare one.

But not sure what the difference between these two?

So I guess the shouldered pre-fit would be make it easier to install and the barrel nut one needs to take care of headspace etc.?

Easier? It depends. The shouldered install is more dumb dumb, but you’re gonna need an action wrench. The nut install would just need that sheetmetal wrench shown, along with a 1/2” drive torque wrench or breaker bar.

Either hardy or carbon 6 was. I believe is was hardy rifle barrels. They are imported through Dallas-rifle compnay

Right now, it seems like PVA has a longer lead time ( It's good to be Busy ) than some of the other barrel vendors.
This will give you plenty of time to pick up the tools and headspace gauge(s) for the barrel swap.

To remove the factory barrel, you will most need an action wrench (wrapped or rear entry) and barrel vise anyway, and the same tools can be used to install the shouldered barrel.

With barrel nut version, in addition you will need headspace gauges.

You should have ordered your barrel from PVA before you knew that you wanted one so by the time you do decide you actually want one you will only have another year to wait for it.

I've been told by the distributor, it only takes about 2-3 months time, 4 months max to order average spec one from PVA. Placed my order end of Jan, early Feb, ETA is around end of April.

But I do think a year+ lead time for stuff not on the shelf currently at PVA is a bit on the optimistic side. Heck even stuff “on the shelf” I’ve waited for like a month plus lol.

Had to make a relief cut in my CTR that had over 2500 rounds on it to get ot broke loose. I tweaked my PVA inside action wrench tring to get it loose. On my latest action, I clamped the stripped action in my bench vise barrel down and soaked it with Kroil for two weeks. It came loose with the inside wrench.

I have the PMA Tools vise and it works with a couple of business cards and some rosin. Get a go gauge and use some scotch tape on the base for a no-go. I have a BugNut barrel and a factory 20" CTR barrel that I swap on my CTR to make it shorter and lighter for hunting suppressed.

I removed barrels from three Tikkas a few weeks ago. It took nothing more than a whack with the palm of my hand on the action wrench. It was the same for all three. I was ready for war from all I read and it took no effort.

They do....was just on their site recently. Couple of different profiles too. They refer to one as the TAC-A1 (I think that's what they call it), bigger diameter than the other. Says a lot about Tikka as a manufacturer that their stock actions are consistent enough that a shouldered prefit is an option.

How do you figure? I’ve seen what’s advertised, but all the smiths I’ve talked to need the specs of the action to spin up a shouldered barrel. Action to action the specs are not as tight on a Tikka T3 as a big horn action or other custom actions that you can just order a shouldered prefit for.

Mine was too. Two 230+lbs men using a rear entry action wrench and a lot of cuss words were used to get that factory barrel off. Maybe the gorilla they had retired?

I just find it odd that all these companies selling shouldered prefits now, six months ago required you to send your Tikka t3/T3x action to them. A lot of great smiths still need to get the specs of your t3/T3x to spin you up a shouldered barrel.

my smith has my TL3 to measure it. though obviously not necessary

measure enough and find theyre the same and that changes. before the CTR i doubt many tikka got rebarreled. they're hunting rifles. start shooting out CTRs and smiths get their hands on them

PVA said they had measured like at least a hundred tikkas before they were comfortable to make a shouldered prefit but they no longer had the concerns after an adequate sampling.
Your smaller time smith may not see enough quantity to draw his same conclusions.


Edit: McGowen/carbon six told me the same thing. Though it is opposite their reputation Ruger m77 are consistent enough that mcgowen offers shouldered barrels for them too. They do make a note that you should check it before firing and possibly have to remove a bit of material but the vast majority are just fine between the min and max headspace specs.

I purchased a proof research prefit shouldered. PR told me the specs are so tight on the T3Xs that all you have to do is toque them to 75-80ft lbs and the head space will be right on. I think 80 is almost too tight, they recommend 75ft lbs now and it's spot on. I just did my second action. Getting the blued barrel off was another issue all together, plenty of topics about that on here.

The stainless actions and barrels and much easier, but not easy.
