I have a Tikka T3 x that has just over 1600 rounds through it. Patriot Valley has a sale on their prefit barrels. What is the largest barrel contour I can fit on the Tikka action without any modifications? I want to do the swap myself with minimal tools.
The reason I want to go larger is after several rounds accuracy starts to suffer. At a class Frank had I would have to let the barrel cool after several shots. I like the looks of the M24 but I’m unsure if the Patriot Valley prefit barrel with barrel nut will fit. I have the action in a XLR Element chassis.
    Thanks.

I can’t answer the barrel nut fit question. Is the current barrel the original factory barrel? A high quality custom barrel should not open up groups with “several shots”, even with a very light sporter taper. If it does it’s a bad barrel.

If your element barrel channel is anything near my Savage and Rem 700 element channels you can definitely run a barrel nut.

I have a shouldered pva on my tikka. Medium palma contour. Quite a bit lighter than a M24. It holds up fine to longer strings of fire. 26" barrel and the rifle weighs a little over 14 pounds in a krg whiskey 3 with a minox zp5.

Well a real M24 M24 contour is 1.2" shank which is max for a tikka anyways

But the barrel nut changes the M24 pretty significantly down to 1.06" at the shank because the nut has to fit but it will still be a pretty heavy barrel

Get a shouldered prefit. Barrel vice. And action wrench and torque wrench. If you get a nut you need headspace gauges too and its just an extra step. Shouldered barrels are free weight

You say you have a t3x and not a ctr(smaller side of what we consider nornal now) so I can only assume your barrel is pretty damn tiny on the lines of a small sporter

Anything medium palma and heavier will be fine for extended strings of fire. Go back 2 years and it was medium Palma heavy palma and then Marksman which is between the two. Now its MTU. Heavy Varmint. Proof Custom Comp. Or just 1.25" straight

Dont think you need to go super heavy. But if the extra 2-3 pounds from a medium palma to M24 doesnt bother you then go for it
