I've spent days searching and can't find an answer, so please be kind.

Picking up a Tikka T3 Scout in .308 early next week and have to decide on a scope for it. My budget is around $500 for the scope, but less would be better.

Primary use for now will be range use(300yds), long range shooting, and possibly a little hunting(although I doubt it).

I'm considering the following:

Vortex Viper 6-20x44 Mil-dot
Super Sniper 10X (rear or side focus)
Super Sniper 3-9
Weaver 3-10 Mil/mil

Which of these would be the best choice for the time being? Any others in the price range that I should consider?

For that price range you can get into a nice Leupold VX3 3.5-10 or 4.5-14. For 300 yards or less a 3.5-10 will be all the magnification you really need. Nice having Leupold quality and theur warranty when you want to spend a good amount of money on a nice piece of glass.

You should be able to get a bushnell elite 4200 mil/mil for around that amount. The 3200 I have on my scout is really nice for what I paid and will suit the job until I buy a Mark 4.

Unfortunately I a reloading kit to buy before then.

I vote Millett TRS

A good friend of mine and fellow Hide member used one back when we first started shooting matches. He was able to hold his own and the scope held up to a lot of rounds. When it finally did bust over a year later they sent him out a brand new one.

SS 3-9x42. I was looking for an optic for a similar rifle and, after weighing it all out, I decided on the SS. Great glass, FFP and built like a tank. There are some on SampleList.com for $499, or they have the group buy with tons of "free" goodies for $599 at SWFA. Lifetime guarantee and you will have no problem recoving your money if you decide to sell it later on.

I'm leaning hard towards the 3-9 SS.

Re: Tikka T3 CTR Scout .308: Help picking scope

The SS 3-9 has better glass than any other scope in the price range (according to guys who really know this stuff, not just me) and the package is a heck of a deal. I mean, even if you don't have a use for the 30mm mount (which seems to be geared toward ARs) I am certain you could get $100 for it on the boards, and you are still left with a bunch of accessories and an awesome scope at bargain-basement price.

Re: Tikka T3 CTR Scout .308: Help picking scope

I will say that for longer range shooting, I do prefer more magnification than 10x. When I get out at 500, my old eyes want more zoom. I do love my camo SS10x42M and clarity is great, but my old eyes just need more magnification. I plan on selling the ss10x42m and getting more zoom (or maybe keeping it for a shorter range gun).
