I have Tikka T3 25-06 collecting dust that I want to convert into a short action and re-barrel to 6.5 Creedmoor. From what I gathered, I need a Release Bolt Assembly (PN# 913-400-677WB from Brownells) to change the bolt stop. What else do I need? Will the existing bolt work? Is this worth doing or should I just buy a new T3 308 and re-barrel.

It will go in a Whiskey 3 chassis. I will have a smith install the barrel. I'm keen on using a Bartlein barrel. Thanks for your help.

I believe that most (or perhaps all) Tikka's have the same length action, with the difference between long and short being the bolt stop. If re-barreling to a short-action cartridge, it might work okay to leave the bolt stop as is, although bolt travel would be excessive. A new bolt stop would probably do the trick. Here's a video that might help (despite it being the opposite of what you're wanting to do):

I went the other way on my tikka. Have a sporter t3 in 260. The freebore was Remington style and could not get 142smk close to the rifling and work in SA mags. Got the kit from brownells, along with some LA mags. The bolt throw only increased by 1/4-3/8", i really didn't notice the increase in bolt throw compared to my 243 tikka custom.

just because the bolt stop is farther back on the so called long action, that doesnt mean you have to run the bolt all the way back every time does it?? i dont know?? i would leave it as is and shoot it!! lee
