Gunsmithing tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Thanks for the kind words guys.
Mam suffers with heart problems and Alzheimers, Dad cares for her. But Dad got the news a few weeks back, maybe 3 months, if he is lucky max 12 months. Cancer of the oesofagus. In his own words, " I'm knackered Pete, I wish i had another 10 years, but it don't look likely" He's taken it on the chin like the old soldier he is, but of course his worry if for Mam. Trying and worrying times indeed.

Anyhow, back to Tikka's.
I had the opertunity to work over a very early Tikka lately, (forget which model but pre 595) I was pleased to see the quality of workmanship in the action and it was a pleasure to give a new lease of life to the old girl. I also mounted a scope for a customer on a 20" T3 tacical just lately. Right out of the box with nothing more than a trigger adjustment it shot ragged holes with fachory ammo.
Put any of these varmint type barreled T3's in a decent stock, Either our RCS, Tom's T4 or the Robertson and i'm convinced that 90% of the time you have a genuine 1/2 MOA rifle.
Thy are among the better made factory rifles, and that statement stands even when you consider rifles twice the price.
I'm sure if Tikka actualy offered a model with a decent stock it would be popular, it might however be to the detriment of the Sako TRG sales.
regards Pete

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

well i am psyched as i just heard from tom manners my stock is ready for my t3 tactical in .223, i got it in gap camo [sweet] and i am also having him pillar bed it, so the rifle will be on its way to tom asap, i'll post a pic when i got it back, i would be very happy if i can get "under 1 moa accuracy or better" out of it in the new stock set up, right now in the tikka factory stock its between 1-2 moa out to 500 yards with a sierra mking 77 gr at about 2600 fps, which is good for a factory set up but not where i want it to be ultimately. when i get it back i plan to out one of pete's muzzle brakes on it [thats on the way across the atlantic ocean...]. with the new bedded stock, brake and the barnard match trigger at under 1 lb i put on it [mac at mt guns did that for me] this should be a good shooter.

I'm leaving in about 15 min. to shoot mine for the first time.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

I put this up on my thread on the stock, but I can paste it here since this is the Tikka upgrade thread:

Well, after much drama (including finding out I had 2 different height Seekins rings yesterday AM) got out this morning to shoot the new setup.

Shot at a place I've never shot before. A friend has a 100 yard range out back of his house. It drops probably 6-8 feet from the bench to the targets, so I spent a bit of the day trying to figure out how to get enough bag under the butt. We finally (at the end of the day) put a sandbag between the bench and the concrete blocks holding it up. Then I could use my bipod and standard sock.

All day the rifle showed signs, 2 into 1 hole, 3 shots almost touching, of wanting to shoot, but I was just battling this vertical thing from having 2 big sandbags under the butt. Not one 5 shot group over 1", most in the .4-.7" range. All the real deviation was vertical and I've never had vertical with this load before. I could tell it wanted to do more. Well, once we adjusted the bench, BAM! Last group of the day was the last 3 rds. I had of my proof load. It shot into .310"

I learned that this stock likes to be driven different than the OEM stock. The Tikka stock does not like to be pulled into the shoulder at all. If I do that, I get erratic POI. The Manners prefers to be pulled back fairly hard. When I do it right, I can see my shots at 100 yds! I've never seen my shots closer than 500 yds. with this rifle before.

I LOVE THIS STOCK.

We're now going to try to get into our distance range on Wed. Had some H1000 & R22 loads w/208 Amax that showed promise.

I came home with a BIG smile on my face.

Manners ROCKS!

p.s. Big thank you to Scott @ Liberty Optics for straightening out my ring problem so I could go out today.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

i have great news to report on the roedale muzzle brake from Pete L. on my tikka t3 in .223. i shot about 60 rounds through it with a few different loads while chrono'ing some new loads today. this brake is very good. the recoil on my gun is now reduced roughly to that of a .22 LR [almost non extistent now]. also the weight of the brake seemed to add to [1] the stability of the gun [which is still in the tikka factory stock-soon i will have it in a new suit from mr manners] and [2] consistency of accuracy [while a windy day gusting back & forth up to about 10 mph today] the gun shot several 1/2 moa groups with the 77 gr scenar at about 2900 ft per second, according to my chrono. in terms of appearance it is well designed and fits the profile of the rifle well. glad i bought it, its worth the price and a good upgrade. i suggest buying it.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Hey I was wondering how the ordering worked for the Roedale Muzzle Break since it is in Euro's I believe on the website. Thanks for the help,

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Im suprised by all the upgrades and no barrel upgrade? Why is that? And has anyone done a barrel upgrade on their T3 tactical, mine is .308 so that is what I would be interested in. I love the action but the barrel does not seem thick enough for me to be a real tactical rifle. I'm used to extra thick barrels, and I like that they add wait also.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

I put a new barrel on my 300WM. I did it for 2 reasons. I didn't like the pencil profile and the throat was toast by 1500 rds.

I also installed a Tubbs recoil lug when I had the barrel installed.

@ JROB300: only 1500 rds toasted your round? I hope that 308 barrell can arrive at 4000 XD

Take a look at Broughton, also. I was talking to Mike at Underground Skunkworks and he was telling me he got about 4x barrel life on the heat treated Broughton's on .338 LM. I know... second hand info, but enough to warrant some investigation.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Hey inalabama, how much did the muzzle break cost you? Thinking about doing that upgrade next since mine didnt come with a muzzle break and I dont know if I like the look of the Tikka one.

I just ordered the aluminum shroud from hss and they really have great customer service. They sent it out within an hour of me ordering the thing. They make everything easy, I would also recommend them to everyone.

I just tried registering at HSS' website but the default only allows me to pick Australia. Has this been an issue. They do reply quickly I must admit.

Disregard. I figured it out.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Good thread guys. I am almost ready to pull the trigger(No Pun Intended) on a Tikka T3 Varmint. Although I would really like to have a barrel that is already threaded. Anyway. These parts look great as do the stocks. I havent seen to much mentioned on triggers. I would like to find a 2 stage that can be set to around 4oz or so. I saw the Jackson mentioned but I cant seem to find it to buy. Is it gone? What else would you guys recommend.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

IM sure that what I will do. The Tac. just doesnt have any other features I find important for paying twice what the varmint costs.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

My second Tikka was a tactical that I bought used for a good deal. I wouldnt pay the price for a new one. My third Tikka is a Varmint and I would go that way again. I put my Tactical in a Manners stock and there is a EGW rail on it now also so the only thing left on it was the threaded barrel.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Yep. I have searching for a good used one but seem to be coming up short. Oh well. New is nice too. I want to put it in the RCS stock. Once the barrel is shot out I may convert it to 6br

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

A few questions for my Tikka T3 build.

1. Is there anything besides the Jackson Trigger?
2. Where can a Jackson trigger be found?
3. I've read the Tikka factory trigger is decent, does it even need replacement for a long range rig?
4. Is the cheek piece built into the Manners T4 worth the extra money? (vs other options like stock pack or add-on cheek piece)
5. Any new sources for extended 5 round mags under $70?

Wish the Manners T5 group buy included Tikka inlet but I guess the T4 is the only Tikka inlet for now. I definitely would have jumped on that group buy. But I'm excited about the T3 + Manners + 6.5x47 combo. Just need to figure the peripheral stuff.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

1. Havent seen any myself.
2. I dont think he makes them anymore.
3. I dont have an issue with mine, so I havent replaced it.
4. You cannot get the cheek piece on the t4. That is the t4-a which is not available for the tikka yet.
5. Havent heard of any.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

According to Adam @ MHSA here on the Hide, the CG/Jackson was not actually manufactured in anything but a pre-production run for the Tikkas. Some of those were sold. There is no production Jackson trigger, or plans to make one (as far as I could find out).

I modified my stock trigger to go down to 1.5lbs. (any further and the sear does not fully and reliably engage). Every person who has shot my rifle has been shocked at the trigger and thought it was aftermarket.

I used a Eagle stock pack with 2 layers of cut-up mouse pad under it for my cheekpiece.

Works great.

Keep in mind that the comb on the Manners is close to 1/4" higher than the OEM Tikka stock (there's a cutout for the bolt to slide into) so you may not need as much to get proper cheekweld and achieve proper scope alignment.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

When I ordered my Manners T4, they asked me if i wanted the adjustable cheek piece. I said "no" for now but was considering changing it. Maybe I misunderstood.

Was thinking of using an Eagle Stock pack also, or possibly a Karsten if the Eagle doesn't cut it.

Are you sure they didn't say "adjustable length of pull"? I have the LOP kit on my stock.

John

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

I'm pretty sure they asked about the adjustable butt and cheek piece, but there is a chance I misunderstood. I have a 2 week old daughter and I've been getting about 3 hours sleep since Jan 20

I do recall the price being $615 vs. $475 and that is what is listed on the website also:
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">MCS-T4A-( Terry Cross adjustable cheek - fixed butt $615.00 + shipping)</div></div>

If I don't get it, I wonder if I'll end up spending that much or more ($140) fitting something else.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

I could be wrong. When Tom & I talked about the Tikka stocks a year ago, he said he wasn't going to offer the T4A, at least right away and that the next offerings would be in another stock. Perhaps demand changed his mind?

John

Keep in mind that you will have to readjust every time you want to remove the bolt or clean.
