Tikka vs Custom Action???

Could you expound on this a bit? CDI has had bottom metal for some time now. It sounds like you are introducing a new aspect to the system somehow, maybe you can elaborate. Is it that it doesn't need a special inlet?

Thanks Justin. We have filed for a US patent on two different versions of our Tikka nEXTgen Bottom Metal for long action rifles -- one for AICS magazine and one for TRG42 magazine. Both are unique in that we repositioned the magazine well posteriorly to allow a longer OAL that that of existing bottom metal options -- our nEXTgen DMB will allow an OAL of 3.500+ to feed from the magazines

Our AICS version is the first to allow AICS (3.715" 300 WM Magazine) magazines to fit in OEM stocks or aftermarket stocks inletted for factory bottom and is designed to be a drop-in ready DMB system. Our TRG version is the first DMB to mate the Tikka Action with the Sako/TRG 42 .300 WM Magazine. It will not fit in factory stock and requires stock inletting and installation by gunsmith

We are talking with some of the major stock makers about having them offer inletting specifically for our bottom metal.

Are you referring to the bolt stop or the pin that goes from the bolt stop all the way thru the action? There are some aftermarket bolt stops but as far as I know the issue is not with the bolt stop but the pin breaking or loosing. There is some seller in Ebay selling the pin and spring kit for $19.99 but I think it is way expensive for what it is. You can get any SS pin at any hardware store. The dimensions are: 0.079" x 0.662"

I ran a Tikka for a few years in PRS comps, and the bolt stop is why I had to quit using my beloved Tikka. The design simply can't handle rough use, and there does not seem to be a good way to fix it, since there isn't enough material around the hole in the receiver to use a larger diameter pin. I tried elongating the hole in the bolt stop so it would bear against the receiver instead of the pin, and I could still break the pin on command. FYI if you plan on running a Tikka, you can get a 50 pack of the correct metric size pin from McMaster for a few bucks. Carry an extra bolt stop too, because there is a good chance it will fly off into the weeds and you may not find it. One day at a local match I helped a guy tape a sharpie to his Tikka/XLR chassis to act as a bolt stop and on the next stage my Tikka also broke, so we were both rocking the sharpie bolt stop mod.

I remember seeing the pictures of the "sharpie fix" in the old Hide. The metric diameter of the pin is 2mm and as you said it's always a good idea to have some spares in the backpack.

Stopped at a hardware store and cut down an appropriate size drill bit shank to replace the pin. Been good so far, but will be ordering spares.

To be fair, I was using ‘aggressive’ bolt manipulation. If not trying to eject past the next shooter and cycle as fast as a semi, but just out of the rifle, it will probably be fine.

Dallas Rifle i hear is working on a bolt stop that allows for the action wall to take the impact of the bolt instead of the pin. That would theoretically fix the issue. Its not available right now but i heard it was in the works. Im no expert i just figured i'd mention what i found on the matter.

I just recently took ownership of a Beanland-built rifle with a Tikka action. I’ve owned plenty of blueprinted 700’s and a few Stillers. Granted I’ve never used some of the high end custom actions like Bighorn, Defiance, etc... but this Tikka action is by far my favorite so far. The action is a joy to use, and paired with a premium barrel it will shoot way better than the idiot behind the trigger ever will. The very affordable option of going with off the shelf PVA barrel/nut without taking the gun out of commission for months is also very attractive to me.

Sure, a fine custom action is a very nice thing to have. But it’s a luxury. Not a necessity for an extremely accurate rifle that’s more friendly on the budget.

You should have no problem. I've been running a 284win with 3.250"OAL out of a Tikka long action since last fall, with a 5rd Accurate 3006 mag and 2 modified 10rd AI long action mags. The Accurate mag was good to go for me right away, but I wanted 10rd capacity, so got to work on the AI mags. Did basically the same mods as the LR hunter thread, and also added my own spacer in the front of the mag, just like the 5rd Accuratemag. Turned out good and feeds like butter.

Action runs better now than it did then, i guess they get better with age.
I have run 3 Tikkas for over 4yrs now and have never had a bolt stop break on any of them.

I'm on my 2nd and no bolt stop issues either. Tons of buds who run Tikkas as well and none of them have ever broken one to my knowledge.

Seems to be user-specific. If you pull the bolt back like you're trying to break loose the crankshaft bolt on an old Ford, then yeah it might break the pin. If you treat it like a rifle instead of a strongest man competition, then you'll be fine. The Tikka will eject strongly even if you run the bolt really slow, so it's not like a Savage where you have to run it hard to make it eject.

I've had a bolt stop pin break, but it was because I had a poorly sized case get stuck in the chamber and had to use a rubber mallet to drive the bolt back and eject the case. Force of the mallet sheared the pin right off. I ran my Tikka in a competition two weeks ago and had no issues. I don't run the bolt very hard to the rear though. I think the average shooter's not going to see this issue.

I’ve been beating the shit out of both of my custom Tikkas from Prometheus and I yank the shit out of my bolts and it’s been a year now without either one having the slightest problem. I asked my smith if some of his other Tikka customers had one fail there and he said no. I think they are all T3x’s but I dunno. I can tell you I’m going to build a third one for my 6mm PRS build though.

As much as I like my Tikka, I will always prefer a custom action. They are more precise and that leads to more accuracy potential. If building off a Tikka action fits your budget or just floats your boat, there's no reason not to go for it; but comparing a Tikka to a custom action is silly. If they were equal, there wouldn't be much market for custom actions and you'd be seeing loads of successful competitors using them. I think they're great actions and a good choice for a budget build if you don't mind the limitations in available trigger and stock options. If you can afford a custom action, go that way. If you can't, build on a Tikka and enjoy it

Tikka makes great actions but custom actions have several advantages. The main one being the fact that they are usually based on 700 blueprints and give you a phenomenal platform for customizations. The question is what you want to do with it. You wanna customize and have the full range of mods? Get a custom action (I recommend Defiance).
