My dad bought this in 1968 GMT Master from the naafi in Sharjah he gave it to me a couple of years ago because he reckoned his automatic pepsi seiko kept better time.

This won’t be popular and I’m not knocking them really, but Rolex doesn’t do anything for me. If you like them that’s completely fine I just don’t think they seem that special.

If I had crazy watch money I’d get a Hublot or something similar that’s not the traditional classy looking watch...I bet a $200,000.00 MP-09 would piss some people off.

Nobody ever accused a Rolex of keeping good time…

I didn't buy my Day/Date because I cared about it keeping good time. That's what iPhones are for. You only have to dig a little to find out they don't keep consistent time over the long haul. They're a mechanical movement, subject to wear, dirt/grime intrusion and lubrication breaking down. They require maintenance to keep them going. To me, they really are more of a piece of jewelry as opposed to a "timepiece".

Unlike my iPhone, my Day/Date has appreciated in value by three times from what I originally paid for it. It presses many of the right buttons for me and very few of the wrong ones

They really are an amazing, rugged, solid watch. But in the '80's got turned into a status symbol and that has altered the brand. They really are tools. Sadly, somewhat got to the point where they were only worn by tools ;-)

That said, they are amazing watches and have some very classic styling and rugged capabilities. But sort of like BMW's... got associated with... dickheads. Even though that is not a fair assessment of some great mechanical design.

If you like a Rolex, wear it proudly. And don't be a dick. ;-)

He has that thing on every time I visit. Takes away the sting of "What the fuck was I thinking?!?" I still kick myself thinking back to when the Tudor Prince chronos could be picked up pretty regularly for $2000.00 <sigh>

Yes. I've never sent it/them to Rolex. They charge Rape Rates That quite frankly, I'm no where close to willing to pay.

I've had them serviced locally, the most recent one by an independant repair guy who was very reasonably priced, compared to Rolex. He tore it completely down to individual parts, took pics and videos of the reassembly. It was really cool stuff.

But, to your point, still not cheap. If the overhaul/teardown/cleaning/reassembly is done correctly/thoroughly/conscientiously, the overhaul should last 6 to 7 years. Then, rinse/repeat.

Oh, and the Day/Dates eat mainsprings. Particularly when they're coming up to needing a new overhaul. The lubrication dries out, the movement starts getting tight and the poor mainspring shits the bed.

To @sirhrmechanic's point, here's another example of Swiss workmanship. It is Craftsmanship like this that causes me to want to own a Rolex. The engine in this boat is one hundred and twenty one years old. It looks and runs like the day it was commissioned.

Looking at my old Hamilton pocket watch with gold chain and pen knife and still runs I am amazed at how well built those old watches were, made by craftsmen that don't exist anymore, but there are a few.
I am looking for a very basic watch with 24 hr dial and glow in the dark hands.
Probably will find it at Walmart or Amazon. Don't want all of the electric zoomerinos and push this bogatrod to make if find yout heart rate or some such shit as that. I don't want to glow in the dark and be GPSed.
So what am I looking for?

I think they are way over priced, but the old prices made sense. That’s what you get for wanting a status symbol though....mo money. (I’m not saying that’s all it is for everyone)

My problem is I don’t like gold/silver/stainless really. I like a bright color, black, or both.....or camo.

I really want the multi cam Mudmaster they made for the British military but fuck the markup. I have the same carbon fiber bezel, but black everything.

I’ve yet to find the reproduction camo pieces to replace my black parts anywhere.

Zenith El Primero is NOT a cheapie. It's one of my grail watches. Also used in the Ebel "Sonny Crockett" El Primero. I do have one of those!

But there are some amazing watches from Seiko! I am just starting to appreciate their brilliance!

Seiko/japan perpetual movement design is pretty good shit . Seiko and bunch of other sell 100-$ and Less-$, and all use same Seiko NH305A 23 jewel auto movement . Very Accurate time keepers that you can get Wet, and a wear everyday beater, for not giving a shit about wear and tear .

Two dream watches… An older Seiko marine master 300 (runs a less refined Grand Seiko 8R35 movement I believe) and a titanium Grand Seiko spring drive diver. I have always quipped that people who wear Rolexes appreciate good watches… People who wear Grand Seikos know good watches! And not hating on Rolexs (love them) but the new 9 series GS movement is regulating to +/- .5 seconds a day and +/- 10 seconds a month. Add in that back when there were time keeping competitions Seiko was producing 72000 beat per hour movements (and taking it to the Swiss!) and they are some damn fine watch makers in my mind.

EDITED to correct... The MM300 uses the 8L35 movement.

That got replaced with a titanium Fossil that I still have but needs some band pins replaced. I got a leather banded Oakley for dirt-ass cheap several years ago when steepandcheap.com was just starting.

And then I got a smartphone… So I don’t wear either of them now

Not entirely true, I have purchased two brand new steel sports watches Sea dweller & Sky dweller) from an AD in the past 12 months. Was it easy? No, but can be done.

Rolex is a great watch…..there are very few watches you buy at a makers retail, wear the hell outta it and years later after enjoying the timepiece it’s worth more than you paid for it.
