I’m poor so it’s a steel non-professional Rolex for me.

you gents must have had better g shocks than i had. i bought one about ten years back...it lasted me about 6 years before it went haywire. the buttons locked up on it, and the light would come on an off until the battery died. at first i figured it was the battery getting low, so i put in a new one. nope.....same same. so i put a new batter in my luminox again, and that one took a left turn on queer street, too.
my brother never wore a watch, and i asked him how he did it. he pointed out that he just uses his phone. i tried that crap for a year....couldnt get used to it. i looked at the g shocks again...but i want more than 6 years out of a watch. i know a lot of people get that...but they don't seem to hold up for me.

Mine with the tough solar hasn’t skipped a beat in over 10 years. It’s supposed to go for 6 months if left in the dark, obviously no chance of the battery going if it’s ever worn outside.

Talking about Seiko, I don't wear it often. I just don't have the wrist to pull it off.

This one was my mothers, to give a size reference it is about the size of a dime. It also needs work, but finding someone to work on it is proving to be a bit rough. I don't want to mail it off. Wife has no interest, so I am thinking of fixing it and giving it to my new daughter in law.

My son will need to wait till I am dirt to get my daily.

My mtgm900da has lasted me quite well. Not really seeing them new anywhere but it has lasted me quite well. I bought it at Walmart for less that $100. Only problems I have had are related to the band.

You should get the Rolex repaired by ROLEX. You will be amazed at what can be done and they prioritize the repairs based on their inspection of the timepiece. They have complete drawings for all of their movements even though they did not manufacture the base movement in their early days

Got the same one sitting on my window sill with a couple other citizens. Work good for what they are, I just sort of like winding my watch when I get up in the morning. I do like older, outdated stuff obviously.

You should get the Rolex repaired by ROLEX. You will be amazed at what can be done and they prioritize the repairs based on their inspection of the timepiece. They have complete drawings for all of their movements even though they did not manufacture the base movement in their early days

I doubt they will take in a cocktail movement. They won’t touch anything with a radium dial. They won’t leave patina or age (which is important to some older watches.). If your watch is changed from factory configuration (even if face changed by Rolex) they return to how it left factory (My datejust bought new 1990 has a gray face… installed by authorized Rolex Jeweler when I bought it)… and if it goes to Rolex, it will come back with a silver face… that’s how it shipped.

Plus their prices are way higher than a good watchmaker/restoration specialist. Yes, their service is good. But beware anything that is not a new watch.

The “Brand protectors” at Rolex are making service a very chancy thing. Then again, try taking a 1970’s car to a dealer… or a pre-2000 Harley… or anything old. Some companies handle it. Others… well… that’s why there is a restoration and aftermarket industry.

So, after much "mentoring" into getting a well made, rugged, high end, end of the world proof watch by @sirhrmechanic, I caved and picked up a Resco Gen 1 Patriot. The thing is a freaking tank, and is definitely something that will get passed down to one of the kids when I leave this world.

I picked up a couple of beaters from a small watch company named Deep Blue.
The one on the left has a Miyota 8215 auto movement , tritium dials , super comfy stainless bracelet. The Blue dial Ocean Diver 500 has a Swiss made 2824 movement with a exhibition case back. I switchEd from the SS bracelet to the leather one shown….both keep decent unregulated

time , fit and finish quality is good.
Company is so small , if you call them the owner will probably answer.

They repaired my Dad’s from the 50s last year with no questions.

I would never repair a watch like a Rolex other than at the manufacturer. I’ve seen too many “watchmakers” that do more damage than good. The issue is parts that no one can get and pressure testing the case. I have a place here that is very good but the high end stuff always goes back to the manufacture for service. If you can't afford the service every 10 years, then you shouldn't have bought the watch....much like high end cars

If any of you watch guys are interested... I have a charity thing going on with a run of watch straps. It's on the Resco Facebook page. Or I can explain it here...

I have 20 pieces of Bison Leather and 20 pieces of Cape Buffalo Leather. Shot by me and Jim Stejskal, retired SF. One in South Dakota and one in Africa.

The straps are being made by Combat-straps.com in Montreal. Aaron Pimentel. If you want one of the straps, you make a donation to the One More Wave Foundation or the Green Beret Foundation. Honor system... Then PM me with your choice of leather. If anyone is interested, I'll post some pictures of the straps I have had made so far. But you can look at combat straps site and see what they can do. The donation 'gets you the leather' and then Aaron can make whatever you like for whatever watch you like. Straps run about $120 - 180 depending on buckle and complexity.

I'm not making anything off this. In fact, I donated all the leather and time to do these for charity. I'd like to raise $4k for the two foundations (100 per strap), but I am happy with any donation. Your donation is tax deductable by you. We're honorable folks here... so I don't need receipts. Your word is good.

PM me if you are interested and we can get the ball rolling. I'll post pictures if anyone is interested.

These don't just have to go on Resco's... you can get any size, thickness, buckle, metal finish, stitching, etc. you want. These are just some examples. BTW, @MarinePMI is one of the first to get one for Christmas. I did a handful already for some shooting, knife and watch friends.

These are going on my Red Circles. Cape Buffalo on left, Bison on right. Cape Buffalo is a bit darker and 'grainier' than bison.
