Hunting & Fishing Time to retire from the Military looking for home

So after 23 years of service, I am looking for a JOB and home, but want to live in a good area for hunting, mostly rifle..
I am thinking

Montana
NM Upper</span>
Other thoughts?
Keep in mind I am a E8 enlisted retirement so I will need to find a job and raise 2 kids safe

not sure I would have a good job market, I currently own a home with 41 acres in Upper Michigan near CP Grayling-great hunting but no Jobs, I cant live off of my retirement, even Camp Grayling is not hiring unless you are National Guard but I am active duty so that is a no go, which sucks since I have both SF(SOTIC) and DA Sniper schools you would think they could use me there to teach DMR or other course. but no

NW Florida is a good area. My parents have lived in the panhandle since '90.

There are several military bases in the area, Eglin, Tyndall AFB. I dont know what they have available tho but it could be worth a shot.

Oh and the winters are alot easier to deal with than the UP

I guess this is really a matter of personal opinion, but if I could transfer and relocate with the company I work for to any area I wanted....it would be in or around Colorado, Utah, Montana, or even parts of Wyoming. I've always been the outdoors type and these states/areas are all good for hunting and outdoors. Furthermore, these areas embrace and support the sport of hunting/recreation due to the revenue it brings in. I love the lake and the beach, but that's usually only about 3 months out of the year (lake/party season) so I'd gladly trade that for year round hunting and wilderness. There are alot of Pertoleum companies (my occupation) in those areas, but I'm not familiar with them and I have a wonderful job and good job security here. If given the chance and a decent salary though, I'd pack my stuff and be gone.

As much as I hate Fort Hood, there are a lot of contractor jobs to be had there. Central Texas has a lot going for it right now in terms of economy and yet a still relatively low cost of living. There are also lots of potential law enforcement jobs you might be able to break into. Hunting is great here although you'll most likely have to pay to play. Good luck in your transition.

San Antonio is THE best place for military retirees. I know that first hand. Yes, you'll have to buy land or be willing to get on a lease, but you'll have some amazing military care forever.

What about Kansas/ KC area? Plenty of hunting opportunities with public land, centrally located, jobs around depending on skills/local area, lots of safe areas. If you're a small town kind of person, choices abound! Hunt upland, big game, waterfowl, predators all on public land.

Texas or Colorado, both very outdoorsman and gun rights friendly. Texas has alot more stable economy than most states. Hunting is great state wide. Lots of public lands, cost of living is cheap. Value for dollar is there as well.

I live in Sheridan, Wy, and Wyoming has one of the top 5 lowest unemployment rates in the nation. It is probably the most republican state, unions are very weak here so they don't hurt business and the economy, and very few regulations make for an amazing business climate. Also, Wyoming was recently listed as the number two best state for retirement, based on every major factor- I'll try to find the source and post the link. It's only 25 miles north to the Montana border, too. Wyoming has a sales tax but no state income tax, and Montana is the reverse of that. The one down side to Sheridan area of Wyoming is the cost of housing- higher than one might expect. I think you should take a hard look at Billings, MT area, and the Rapid City, SD, area. Both are booming cities, and they offer so much of what makes America great.

Well, out west it is a prairie after all, but cover is around as well as creek/river bottoms which can be pretty thick. Hardwood Timber-depends where you are really.

I would cross off north FL in a heart beat, just wrapped up a five year stint in the Jax area and I could not wait to get my family out of there. Crime is unreal, and traffic was terrible for some reason. plus, I just can't be sweating my balls off during deer season.

I was stationed in AK before my FL gig and RAN back once I was done down there. I hope to retire up here, for sure.

I'll second for San Antonio. Lots of contractor jobs and you're in the middle of some of the best deer habitat in the world. You’ll have to search for a good lease but plenty are available. Good luck…

I'm in Panama City now, and the economy here sucks. The base is turning from AETC (training) to ACC (combat) and they're laying off all the civilians as a result. Lockheed-Martin, DS-2, and Boeing are the big employers on base, and they're all taking hits.
Plus, it's a very anti-gun community, in my opinion. I'm from Missouri and I just can't get used to a town with only 3 gun stores and 0 (as in none) rifle ranges.
For outdoorsy-stuff, the Panhandle sucks. Hiking/camping is a waste down here. It's all flat and sandy, so no matter how far you hike, the scenery doesn't change. Pine trees and sand about sums it up...

..If you guys are wondering why I have a wide verity of areas, I am looking at possibly teaching JROTC at some of these high schools, at least I keep the same pay.

My cousin lives in Farmington and loves it. I hunted near Chama with him two years ago, the economy doen't appear very good in that area. It's a beautiful area though with lots of game.

Another vote for the Sheridan/ Buffalo/ Gillette area. There is a lot of oil and gas jobs or coal mine jobs. Both pay pretty well and the hunting around here is very good as well. Also lots of public land to shoot on and great camping in the Big Horn Mountains.

God I love Northern Wyoming, Montana, and western South Dakota. But the real secret is the fly fishing in Northern Wyoming- as the out of staters drive to Montana to fly fish!

I guess I should have said the H'ville area. I live about 45 min from there in Cullman and it's a great place.

Madison, New Hope, Hatselle, Decature and Arab should all be nice and keep you close to Huntsville for jobs.

I live in upper NM. Whatever you do and wherever you go, find a target rich environment. Not too much crime and a population of around 6000. The Whittington center is only about 8 miles away. There is some good fishing and hunting around here.

What kind of work are you trying to get into? ALot of guys are working in the Natural Gas fields. I seriously doubt that you wouldn't pass the piss test that they would require. I can ask around and get some information if you think that you would be interested.

Wyoming is a great state too, my parents live up there and the hunting and fishing are awesome. No state taxes either.

I dont know too many people who are able to live off of their retirements now a days. One of the concerns I have in picking up a construction job comes from a lesson learned here in Nv. It doesnt last for ever. This state gave up most of its "other" sources of ecenomic growth for construction, gambling and tourism. All of that has dried up, Nevada is #1 in unemployment, highest is in Vegas. I live in a more remote, but not very rural area, my wife lost her job in May '11 (casino), and has been out of work since. We are now being forced to move to the city. Consider all your options. I dunno if you plan to rely on hunting for putting food on the table, or if just to have something to do during the season.
Once I can get my family back on its feet I would like to take up hunting. Put meat in the freezer and have something fun to do. But for me its something I would just take time from work off for and take a days drive to get there. Some just want to head right out the door or drive a few minutes, others will catch a plane to the other end of the country. Consider your options, and weigh the wants vs. the needs.

I've lived in OK all my life and wouldn't reccomend living in this state to anyone.....ever! If it wasn't for the excellent job I have, I'd be gone. I can't really comment on the employment oppurtunities here, but I know they certainly are not great. Cost of living/housing is ok as long as you get outside the the cities. The hunting in this state is "ok" at very best. I've not hunted the northeastern part to the state, but have hunted pretty much everywhere else. Our public lands can't hold a flickering candle to what CO, WY, MT, NM, have and I've been to all of them except MT. We have a huge number of hunters and not enough land to support them. Lease property is getting outrageous. I lease 160 acres to 2 guys just for deer season (oct-Dec) for $3000. I didn't want to lease it, but they begged for a month.....so they got it.

Lastly, our weather is horrible. We had almost 80 straight days of "above 100 degree heat" this past summer. The winter before was insanely cold, yet we don't get hardley any snowfall. That's kind of a "rip off" in my book as I love winter and love snow.

When you drive through Colorado, West/North Wyoming, Montana......your always amazed at the beauty of the landscape. Breath taking views, mountains, huge pines, aspens, wildlife abound.....you sure as shit don't ever hear people talking about how amazing it was driving through Oklahoma.

Spokane, WA would put you in a strategic place to launch. Close enough to WY, MT, ID, UT, etc.... Also, there are good hunting opportunities for deer and elk in the state as well.

I don't know if anyone asked it but a good question would be what kind of weather do you like? I'm not suggesting MS as its good hunting but conditions sort of suck. Dry cold in the winter, extreme humidity in the summer, mosquitoes, swampland, buckshot, it can get messy.

Well first off.....thanks for your service to this country. I live in Colorado. It is a hunting and fishing friendly state. Long range hunting to the east, elk and moose in the hills. Fishing is good, especially in the clear water on the mountain flyin for trout. It's a beautiful state and very safe for children with alot of family oriented activities.

I'm originally from Pennsyltucky or Pa. I moved out here after I ets'd out of the Army, haven't left since. Sure Pa is gorgeous, but it's still pretty open out here with not as many people and not as much congestion of urbanism.

Va hospitals are located in Wyoming and in Colorado Springs. So no matter what part of the state you live in, you're covered. And Co's VA assistance program for finding a job is top notch.

Pueblo is a neat city. Alot of southwest heritage. It's wide open down there with lots of room for shootin'. The best advice I can give you is to do your research off of an opinionated forum so that you gain facts rather than opinions. Anyone can tell you why they like or dislike a location, but most of those answers are of a personal nature. You need un-biased information to base your decission on. Sounds like you are dedicated to your children, so I would look at school performance, child accesibility of programs outside of school and overall crime and living conditions. That's what made me move here. PA is a shithole when it comes to schools.(I know because I grew up in the PA school system). Crime is through the roof and there's too many people there for my liking. I like to be able to go out and hunt and be relatively safe, not overwhelmed with every asshole dressed in orange shooting at everything and anything they see. So for me it was the right choice. The schools out here rank very high in the nation, crime is low and it's a child friendly state. Oh yeah, I have gone hunting out here plenty of times where I didn't see another person for days. My kinda scenario.

Unfortunately in my 23 years of service, I have been over seas for 13 of them, only states I lived in is Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Maryland and NTC California.

Though I am from Upper Michigan, the job market is in the toilet, no way I could supplement my retirement. I all ready own a house and 41 acres in Upper Michigan, I have owned it for 5 years and lived in it for 30 days, my wife stayed there for my last 15 month tour in Iraq across from my family to take care of her and the kids, but I can't retire in it on my retire pay. So I rent it out at 3/4 of the Bank payment. But anyway. Thanks all for your input.

I will take leave this summer and travel to the areas we have discussed.

I'm currently in law enforcement and I'm always planning for my second job after I retire. I keep telling my wife I would love to live in Montana, Colorado, or just stay here in Oklahoma. Problem is she hates a lot of snow. She was a Husker in her college years, and the snow grew old quick. Anyways, not sure of your age but I'm considering being a game warden as my second career, or working for the agricultural department. Nothing better than spending time outdoors, learnin deer or any animals habit and then hunting it in season. Best thing is, your getting paid to do it. My top states for retirement home are Montana, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas (I love the San Antonio area, really nice people there).

Don't discount north Florida. I was stationed at Eglin AFB and that part of the state was great. A long way from the big city. Baker is quite a nice place. Other small towns there like Crestview and Niceville are still small. Convenient for you to have access to base if you choose to use the hospital ot commissary.
I was lucky enough to meet a guy in my unit that grew up in Baker. His dad owned a few acres inside the Blackwater state park area. I was fortunate to become good friends with his family and went deer, turkey and dove hunting with his dad all the time. Hurricane lake is right there n Blackwater as well. Bass fishing was good. Salt water fishing is very close as well. Small town setting out in the country with good people and values. The kids will enjoy the fact that the beach is just 30 minutes away.
My wife and I took my 5 year old daughter there on vacation this past summer. If I had to pick somewhere to move besides being home here in Texas, this would be one I'd consider for sure. Good luck on your search.

I thought I'd toss Oregon into the discussion on places to live. It has a lot of outdoor activities going for it. There are some decent sized towns that will still give you plenty of access to zillions of acres of hunting/fishing country.

I've live in and spent time in most of the western states and have learned a few things about small town employment over the years.
Depending on your education or job skills, small town jobs that support a family are hard to find. Once you figure out what line of work will keep you happy and provide for your family, you'll probably narrow your search down considerably.
Cities the size of Pueblo, Bend, Boise, Casper and Sheridan will have much more opportunities that towns w/ only a few thousand people in them.
The small towns scattered out west that are great places to live are usually farming/ranching communities and very limited in job opportunities.
That's been my experience, hope it helps.

Baker, mt is a decent place to go. Plenty of areas to pull the trigger. Coyote, deer, antelope and you won't have to go far for elk. Prairie dogs close also.

That or utah for some reason. There are parts of utah that just keep drawing me back. Beautiful country.

Low cost of living, diecent job oppertunities, lots of room, pretty good hunting. Gun friendly though you will have to wait 6 months before you can carry concealed w/out a permit. Until then, if you have a permet from somewhere else, it should get you by. Wyoming reconizes most states.

As for kids, You'll not find a better place for raising kids. I've been all over the country, I can't think of a better place for kids.

I have no problem putting my granddaughter on a horse and letting her room.

Be prepared to spend come gas money on ball games. I spend most of the winters chasing my granddaughters volleyball and basketball teams all over the state. But I wouldn't miss one of her games for anything.

fm, If no one has pointed it out to you, the usajobs opm site has all types of jobs with the US forest service, Beureau of land Manangement, and the like. I know that USFS in particular has many types of positions in thier offices and out in the field as technicians that get a lot of veterans. Many in the types of places you would like to live. Some of those positions you would qualify easily for. Best of luck with your job search, and WV would welcome you I am sure if you found a job here.

Wyoming is a great place to live if you can avoid living in a town such as Wamsutter! I would like to move back to Wyoming someday. It has the best hunting of any state I've lived in except Alaska.

Most of the decent jobs w/ the BLM require a bachelor's degree in natural resources. There are jobs such as equipment operators and maintenance that don't require a degree, but I don't know what they pay.

Small town law enforcement has always looked like a good way to settle in to a small community. Finding a way to start your own business or buying an existing business such as a gun shop and working for yourself can be one route also.
