Hunting & Fishing Time to retire from the Military looking for home

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

I would go Texas or Colorado. You look around the Colorado springs area, Ft Carson's up there's. NM is just a 6 hour drive to Farmington. Great hunting in colorado. Springs in centrally located so you go anywhere. Hit the Rockies mountains or go the high deserts in pueblo and canyon city and do some great dog hunting. Texas, there are lots of bases, have your pic! It's probably the most stable state too! Homes are priced good.

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

I haven't weighed in on this because I'm still figuring this one out.

When I left 'the world' and struck out in search of the Non-Corporate-Culture lifestyle, I had the choices of North, West, or South.

I had been West, and was not totally enchanted with the pioneer heritage point of view. Nice place, but just about five days worth of power shutdown away from death by thirst.

I had some views that coddled my back brain with dreams of a Viking ancestry, and I went North, which is where I am today. But I kept thinking about the problem and alternative solutions.

I visited South, namely Orlando, for extended time, and it has a lot going for it, seen in a Veterans' light.

It's better suited to providing the needs of a retiree, and also better suited to providing the particular needs of a retired veteran. It's just a simple question of the retired veterans' percentage of the local population. It's higher there, that's all there is to say about it.

Jobs. Let's be serious. If there's a good place to look for a job these days, I have no idea where that may be. It sure isn't around here in Central NY. I'm not only carrying my household, I'm also carrying a significant slice of my Daughter's too. There's a lot of that going around these days, and you don't have to be my neighbor to understand that.

Which brings us back to retiring from the military right now in the first place. I wouldn't; not now. If you can retain a paying slot in the military, by all means you should continue to do so, and at whatever cost it takes. You have rank, seniority, and knowledge that's pertinent to your livelihood. You're at your current and historic earning peak. You have benefits and inhabit a community within which you already fit.

Unless you already have all of those in greater abundance elsewhere, you ain't got diddly, and right now, there ain't a whole lotta diddly going around outside the service. Maybe you're not totally happy in the service right now, but if you want happier, don't look outside; there ain't none. You think things are bad outside right now, you ain't seen nuthin' yet, Bro.

Gun friendly communities. They are what they are, and they are also rather further down on my list of of prioritites. Three hots and a flop come pretty far higher on the list. I got a family to support before I need to worry about range time. I don't care about my neighbor's angst. As long as guns are available, I'll have mine, and if things ever actually reach the push and shove stage, I'll still have 'em. Chuck Heston got it right about cold, dead hands.

Greg.

Also don't forget there are some states that do not tax your military retirement. I don't remember them all, but Wyoming, Florida and Nevada were 3 of them if I remember correctly.

Best of luck with your transition! Use your education benefits too.

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

NW FL/panhandle is not jacksonville. i agree that is a sewer. panhandle is more of a "southern" state. better hunting than rest of FL. close to good hunting in GA/AL. fishing in n.gulf is supposed to be better than elsewhere don't know about freshwater or jobs.

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

Based on the man's post, it looks like the top four factors are jobs, affordable housing, safe communities, and good schools. My guess is you're in your early 40s, so true retirement might be 20+ years away. Take a look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics latest unemployment numbers by state, research the cost of living for your "top five" areas/states, and learn their crime rates. As a rule, most rural areas have smaller class sizes, which means more attention per student- almost always ensuring a good educational scenario.

Pay no attention to Cast Blast Cast. He thrives on it. He is the Snipers Hide herpes that keeps coming back every now and then.

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

Kansas has state tax exemptions on military retirement. Check out USAA for military retirement information. I have about 5 years before I might punch out but I'll probably stay a bit longer.
19 years time in service so far.

Kansas has good whitetail, turkey and geese as well as duck. Jobs miht be an issue unless your near Kansas City but even then the market sucks a bit.

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

I just came back from a hunting trip in Iowa and stopped by a friends place in Olathe, Kansas. I had never been there before but deffinately liked the small town feel to the place and the easy drives to modern stores and shops (for the wife). He lived just a few miles outside of town.
It is real close to Kansas City for jobs and he said that the teachers and schools for his kids were good. They still say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning in class there...
I also stopped in St Charles, Missouri on my way and definitely want to check that place out some more. It's close to St. Louis for jobs but I don't know about the schools.
Good luck and happy retirement.
Don't forget to get everything documented in your medical record and make two copies for yourself!
Sleep apnea = 50%
There's great hunting around both areas, land is way cheaper than where I am, and customer service comes in English.

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

My BIL is about done with 22 years in the Marines, he is in same boat. He is getting a bunch of private sector job offers for various things though. I think he wants to get into the Park Service

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

I agree that Oregon is good place as it is also close to Alaska and Western Canada . Also has a special place in my heart as my Mother was born there and my Grandfather is burried there . However I have never seen it . I know how you feel when you get to the end of your stint. It will feel like you are a bit lost for a while. Keep busy and don't look back .

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

Oregon is booming for construction right now, great hunting and fishing. Lived here for 35 years and will stay, I was a electrician and will retire in 8 weeks or so. My retirement will let me hunt and fish the rest of my life with no worries, ye-ha. I have raised my family here and all has been good.
Thanks for all your service and I hope you the best.
Good luck,
Paul

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

I lived in Montana for 2.5 years finishing up my Engineering degree. Absolutely love it there, and hope to buy some land there some day...off in the distant future. Lots of great hunting and fishing, but I'm sure you already knew that. Not really sure what the job market is there though to be honest. The bigger centers like Bozeman and Billings should have jobs, but doing what exactly I don't know. Billings does have some work in the oil and gas sector, but I don't think there is a whole lot. If you go farther East/North, you come across the Bakken which is a big oil play. Places like Sidney Montana would have lots of jobs (I assume) in the oilpatch, but you are getting away from the beautiful parts of Montana.

Wyoming and Colorado should have lots of jobs as far as the oilpatch goes. Lots of activity going on over there.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck with the search!

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

My vote is anywhere near the Rocky Mountains (NM, CO, WY, ID, MT). If you can't pull that off at least stay west of the Mississippi...

I've always been the outdoors type and these states/areas are all good for hunting and outdoors. Furthermore, these areas embrace and support the sport of hunting/recreation due to the revenue it brings in. I love the lake and the beach, but that's usually only about 3 months out of the year (lake/party season) so I'd gladly trade that for year round hunting and wilderness. There are alot of Pertoleum companies (my occupation) in those areas, but I'm not familiar with them and I have a wonderful job and good job security here. If given the chance and a decent salary though, I'd pack my stuff and be gone.

That would be my vote. TX doesn't have much public land. Oil is booming in Eastern Montana W. North dakota and NE Colorado. Heard McDonalds in williston was paying $20 an hour because everyone was out making money in the oil fields.

If you are going to go to this area, PLEASE look into the water situation before you go. I had friends that bought property in the San Juan forest, outside of Mancos. You either have to have a water truck or be fortunate enough to be on a tap. I think Mancos is 6900 ft., they lived at 8,200. Not much water pressure when it has to get pumped back up 1,300 ft.

N. Florida is different than any other area of the state. Jax is not a good place to live, but I10 gives you a lot to commute out. Around Tallahassee is very nice but the overall economy of the state is not very good. Expect to pay through the nose for homeowner's insurance 20+ after Miami raped the insurance companies w/ Hurricane Andrew. And it's good luck getting HOI here.

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

Not sure of your skill set is but houston Texas has one of the best job markets in the country and is a very conservative area with a lot of great people.

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

Update Re: schools.

Rural areas used to have smaller classes.

These days, cutbacks ar no longer optional, staff shrinkage has eliminated the class size discrepancy, and a lot of non-core curricula and activities are already gone.

My village is rural/agricultural, has a pop of 1600-1800, one traffic light, and a Central School District K-12 school complex. My Granddaughter is already doing a lot of study halls for periods that should have been classes she signed up for last year, but don't exist this year. Computers and Arts are getting hit hard.

And the fat Lady still ain't singin' yet...

Even when (if?) the economy picks up, there'll likely be a lag before it trickles down to help the schools significantly.

I see a lot or 'Inverse Chicken Little' on the tube lately, "The Sky Is No Longer Falling...!!!". Wish it were so...

I think we may even need to maybe consider 'the good ole days' to be a thing of the past. If your plans don't include that possibility, they probably need updatin'.

And personally, when gas hits $4, I damned well better be seein' some shit gettin' kicked out over there where the oil comes from. 'Nuff's enuff. Otherwise, stick a fork in us.

Greg

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

Check out Bozeman, MT. well expand to Gallatin and Park Counties. I won't say that there's a plethora of jobs, but there is a wide variety of choices. Anything from Tech to blue-collar depending on what kind of job you are looking for.
Hunting an fishing of every kind. Small game to moose and bear, brooks in town are fishable, creeks just outside of town and rivers in every direction. Fly fishing the Missouri is quite possible the most centering thing on Earth. If you live in the right place in town you can walk to hunt and fish. Unless the Sierra Club has managed to absolutely fuck up public land, there are plenty of great places to snowmobile and atv. Xcountry skiing, hiking, and biking aplenty.
We never locked the doors to our house in 20 years, Bozeman is growing by leaps and bounds so I'm sure it's not quite the same. The schools are good, university too. If your kids don't want to go in town there are plenty of in state schools to choose from. It's a great place to raise kids.

Good luck wherever you land.

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

Take a drive through Cent. Mo sometime and have a look. You have Whiteman AFB and Ft. Wood in Mo, good deer, turkey, pred., hunting along with others, good fishing. You have the Lake of the Ozarks for summer fun along with Mark Twain Lake and others in the northern part of the state. Lots of rivers for floating and camping in the south along with more lakes. Cost of living is pretty decent also. Weathers not bad usually, hot in the summer and the winters generally aren't to bad, but if you don't like the weather, wait a day or 2, it'll change.

Re: Time to retire from the Military looking for home

X2 on around San Antonio but not in it.Dino anyone who hasn't fallen in love with the hillcountey area of Texas. New braunfels is a nice area. River, lake hunting all right there, fredericksburg, perdenales area etc. All rear areas in my opinions and our winters are great
